There was a moment late last night as I scrubbed fake blood off my fleece jacket when I wondered if my decision to attend the evening’s performance of Evil Dead: The Musical was worth it. And I decided that yes, indeed, it was well worth it. If I were a punny guy, I would say it was a bloody good time. But I’m not.
The show has been well-received throughout town and last week even attracted the attention of Bruce Campbell, who played Ash in the films. The Medford resident came up for a show a couple weeks ago and gave it a thumbs up, sticking around for a Q and A session and photos with the cast.
When I had a chance to talk with Sam Raimi – he of the many righteous "Evil Dead" pictures – I had to get his thoughts on the matter. The first thing he told me was that the horror genre scares the crap out of him. "It's hard to sit through them," he confessed. "I really enjoy it when I'm in the middle of it, it's just hard to approach the theater." The second thing he said is that he loves them dearly. The third and fourth and fifth and sixth? Those scary movies he cherishes the most – and one he can't wait to see.

Sam Raimi's seminal 1981 film The Evil Dead is being resurrected for a midnight movie run.
This theatrical release gives fans a chance to experience the original as it was intended to be seen. "Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like EVIL DEAD - especially on the big screen," says Bruce Campbell. "I'm really glad it's back. People are gonna be hurt."
The Evil Dead films are quite unique, as the progression in style over the course of the trilogy is unlike any other. The first film is straight up horror, with mild comedic moments peppered in-between (tree rape). The second sacrifices a portion of the terror in exchange for much larger comedic play, which, best I can describe, is like watching a THREE STOOGES film, where the Stooges have been possessed by demons and are trying to kill one another. Then with the third film, Raimi decided to take the style of part two, but set it in medieval times and add a large scale epic-action battle and love story into the mix, thus making AOD an Action/Horror/Romantic-Slapstick-Comedy/Period/War film. And the fucked up thing is, it works.
Ah, but what of The Evil Dead (a.k.a. Evil Dead 1), the first film of the series? Although it is not nearly as amusing as its sequels, and though its violence is possibly more brutal than even Oscar-winner Peter Jackson’s classic Dead Alive, I would nevertheless characterize it as a horror-comedy, as well.
Here’s the difference, though. Where Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness show a blend of horror and comedy, Evil Dead 1 seems to be two separate movies: one a horror movie and one a comedy.

With fans buzzing about a potential debut for face-changing villain Chameleon or the master of illusion, Mysterio, there's the possibility that all of Campbell's cameo roles could actually be the same person. Of course, those rumors are at odds with some arguing that he'd make a better Kraven the Hunter than either of the two aforementioned bad guys.
Heck, the "Evil Dead" actor was a ring announcer in the first film, a theater usher in the second and a nasty waiter in the third—but could these roles be connected? Should they be?

THE NIGHTMARE WARRIORS is definitely for the fans. Jeff Katz and James Kuhoric construct the story using the survivors from both A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH franchises, and it’s a little bit sweeter knowing who these characters are rather than a stereotypical teen getting a machete to the gut. All have gathered together to take down these two monsters of mayhem, but something’s missing. Someone that likes to carry a boomstick at all times.
Thrown in the middle of it all is Ashley Williams, aka The Chosen One to battle the Necronomicon. And after successfully defeating the two monster machines in the first comic book series, poor old Ash finds himself back at square one after Jason Voorhees finds out where he lives, and takes care of his girlfriend. (WARNING: Ladies, do not date Ash. Your chances of dying are pretty high and full.) So it’s an all out war now with FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH: THE NIGHTMARE WARRIORS. But is it good amidst all this chaos in characters in and plotting?
I expect “Drag Me to Hell” to find a loyal, devoted audience on Blu-Ray and DVD. Horror always does well at home and the “Unrated” tag on the release is likely to draw in fans turned off by what they thought was a neutered version in theaters. People who finally catch up with it will see one of the best horror movies of the year, a movie that delivered on expectations (without quite exceeding them) of people raised on Raimi classics like “Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn” and “Darkman”.

Evil Dead II is what REALLY sparked my obsession. I knew Ash was a cool dude in the first one, but the second film absolutely blew my mind. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on screen. A guy who cut his own arm off, the laughing rooms escalated times a BILLION, a reflection popping out of the mirror and grabbing him!? I couldn't believe it. I was hooked on it, and it was the absolute perfect treat for my bloodlust.
My obsession has gone to the point of owning random bits of Evil Dead memorabilia (thanks to some lovely donations and presents) and I'm proud to say that this Halloween...I will be a female version of Ash. Pictures will come.

In the meantime, members of the President's staff are noticing strange goings-on in the White House... This special Army of Darkness mini-series event - featuring the unusual pairing of Ashley J. Williams and President Barack Obama -- is written by Elliott (Army of Darkness/Xena) Serrano, illustrated by Ariel Padilla and features covers by Todd (Amazing Spider-Man) Nauck and Lucio Parillo!
Army of Darkness might not be the perfect horror movie, nor is it the perfect comedy, but it works pretty damn well as a horror-comedy. Bruce Campbell once again gives Ash the bravado and insanity that we’re used to, while adding a new level of snarkiness. His performance(s) are fun, and they drive the overall absurdity that Sam Raimi has built into this movie, absurdity that plays perfect fan service to the Evil Dead loyalists around the world.
This one is sick and twisted and hilariously dark all at the same time. If you are looking for a horror film that will gross you out, make you scream and in the very next frame have you “rolling on the floor laughing your ass off,” well, you certainly want to make a bee-line for the rental store of choice to pick up “Drag Me to Hell.”
Speaking of horror comedies, few directors blend those genres more effectively than Sam Raimi. So surely the man merits his own Halloween double feature. Start with Raimi's latest, " Drag Me to Hell," which arrived Tuesday on DVD ($30) and Blu-ray ($40) in an unrated director's cut that promises more heapings of goofy gore in what already stood as one of 2009's most deliciously over-the-top shockers. ("Hell" also features the greatest elderly-gypsy-vs.-young-bank-teller girlfight in cinema history.)
Once you've gone to hell, jump backward in Raimi's filmography and watch his first attempt at horror hilarity, the cabin-in-the-woods classic " The Evil Dead."
The Kalamazoo Horror Fest, which begins at 10 a.m. at Game Warehouse, will have the Ladies of the Evil Dead signing autographs, an appearance by the Hooter Girls, and catering by Lenny’s Sub Shop.The Horror Fest will move over to Hooters at 5 p.m, and at 6 p.m. attendees will meet up at Bronson Park to prepare for the Zombie Crawl. There will be a booth set up supplying zombie makeup.
Starting at 7 p.m., the zombified crowd will make its way through downtown Kalamazoo to Rugger’s Up and Under Bar.
There, a question and answer session will be held with the “Ladies,” as well as a screening of independent horror flicks.
Capping off the night will be a zombie party at Wayside Bar & Grill until 2 a.m., where “The Evil Dead” will be screened.
Also attending the Kalamazoo Horror Fest will be Tom Sullivan, make-up artist for “The Evil Dead,” Dan Hicks, who acted in “Evil Dead II,” and the “Evil Dead: The Musical” cast.

This weekend, we are taking a break from the obscure, the low-budget and the Coroner. As in, I’m taking over for a few days and I’m going to turn the focus of this daily feature toward my favorite sub-genre: horror comedy. And while Robert Fure did write about the entire Evil Dead franchise in one post last year, I just cannot let such aggression stand. These movies (especially this and tomorrow’s entry, Army of Darkness) deserve their own posts. So lets do this…
After 80 years, The Little Theatre is trying something new. Executive Director Bob Russell just hopes it won't be too hard to clean up all the blood. "(We've) never had a round-the-clock horror film feast," he says. "We might get a lot of fake blood over our seats. I don't know what we'd use (to clean it); we'll have to talk to the upholstery people just-in-case."
Fittingly, the first film shown at midnight will be George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Next, cult classic The Evil Dead, starring Bruce Campbell and directed by Sam Raimi, the man who helmed the Spider-Man films will be screened at 2 a.m.

Although Evil Dead 2 works well as a sequel, I've always considered the film to be a re-visioning of the first low-budget classic only this time Raimi had more moo-lah-ah to play with. Even though there are sure-fire elements of horror present, I'm not REALLY sure I'd call it a straight-forward horror flick as it's way too goofy to be taken seriously. Having said that, there's plenty to love here & more reason to re-visit Evil Dead a second time. Need I say that the laughs come as fast as the gore??
Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn (1987) and Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession (1981) are two sides of the same cursed coin, producing in the viewer an identical effect—sheer giddiness at their audacious, divinely, demonically, deliriously inventive visual play. Each flick is a series of riffs on the notion of possession—Raimi's aimed at the grindhouses, Zulawski's at European arthouses. But both films are so dizzyingly choreographed that keen viewers will recognize them as two of the 1980s' most sublime horror classics.
The Evil Dead, presented by Cool Classics at the Colony. Many people know Evil Dead 2, with its chainsaw gauntlet, "boomstick" and "groovy." But before that, there was Sam Raimi's first feature collaboration with Bruce Campbell, a straight-up horror flick with elaborate tracking shots, graphic mutilation and the most evil trees you will encounter in all of cinema. This ain't no funny business, but it remains a damn effective piece of cinematic terror and a favorite of Stephen King.
