Bruce Campbell Credits ‘The Walking Dead’ & ‘AHS’ With The Popularity Of Horror

Having been the face of The Evil Dead franchise since its inception in 1981, one could argue that Bruce Campbell is something of a pioneer in the horror genre.

In fact he’s gone one further than that as he’s been heavily involved in the evolution of horror including its introduction to television as he’s starred in all three seasons of the TV series developed around the films, Ash vs The Evil Dead.

With the third and final season of the series out now, P.TV chatted to old m8 Bruce about his time working on the franchise.

Hilarious Faux Vintage Ad Sells Ash’s ‘Evil Dead’ Chainsaw

In Gallery 1988‘s latest showing “Product Placement”, artist Matt Talbot shares the hilarious print “The Chainsaw That Made a Man Out of Ash!”

The vintage-looking ad – limited to 40 pieces – hilariously sells Evil Dead‘s Chainsaw hand that Ashley J. Williams – who was awarded the title of “World’s Most Dangerous Chin”  – infamously rocked in the Evil Dead franchise. Let Ash prove he can “make you a new man.”

The print is only $30, but Ash’s invaluable chainsaw and help are going to cost you $500.

The Wild Sounds of Sam Raimi

Info:

When Sam Raimi was honored with the Motion Picture Sound Editors' Filmmaker Award 2016, he acknowledged the importance of sound in his work: “My career as a director began with a low-budget horror picture that relied heavily on sound to compensate for what we couldn't afford to show on camera. As it turns out, in cinema, some of the most powerful moments are induced not by what we see, but by what we hear.”

From the chainsaw buzz of The Evil Dead, to the web-slinging “thwips” of Spider-Man, sound design is central to the filmography of Sam Raimi. The sounds in this video are wild, and every bit as inventive as Raimi’s unforgettable images.

Don’t miss our other videos on the signature sounds of your favorite filmmakers, like Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho, Paul Thomas Anderson, Claire Denis, the Coen Brothers, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Agnès Varda. Plus, watch us gush about “The Evil Dead” star Bruce Campbell, and check out How Sound Editing and Sound Mixing Make Movies Complete.

Bruce Campbell reveals why he thinks Ash vs. Evil Dead was better than the movies

For generations of horror fans, the Evil Dead movies are a pinnacle of the genre — but series star Bruce Campbell surprisingly prefers the recent spin-off.

Campbell has recently vowed to retire from his iconic role as the chainsaw-swinging demon-hunter in Ash vs. Evil Dead after its cancellation, more than 30 years since he originated the darkly comic role.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, he explained why he's reluctant to do another Evil Dead movie on the back of the TV show's recent successes.

Bruce Campbell on the Legend of Bruce Campbell and 40 years of Evil Dead

“I don’t think about death,” calmly states Bruce Campbell. That’s ironic, coming from him. Over the last 40 years Campbell’s become a legend in the entertainment industry for fighting off deadites and dealing with the Necronomicon. Having starred in what is arguably one of the most popular cult horror-franchises in the history of cinema, Campbell’s nonchalant declaration is a little unexpected. And yet, his notoriety from the Evil Dead films and series is actually an unintentional byproduct of a serendipitous series of events in an otherwise vast and all encompassing career.

You Can Now Pre-Order the Unrated Version of the ‘Evil Dead’ Remake on U.S. Blu-ray!

Back in October of 2016, you may recall, the extended “Unrated” version of Fede Alvarez’s insanely gruesome remake of Evil Dead got a digital release, home to five minutes of footage that was not included in the film’s theatrical release. Oddly, the “Unrated” version was *only* made available digitally, with no home video release in sight at that time.

Two years later, it’s finally on the way. As we recently told you, Sony will re-release Evil Dead on Blu-ray on October 23, including the theatrical & Unrated versions. As of today, the hotly anticipated Unrated Blu-ray is now available for pre-order over on Amazon!

The Evil Dead: Low Budget Legends

In 1979 Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert were just a group of hopeful filmmakers about to take the first step into cinematic history. They set out with the goal of creating “the ultimate experience in grueling terror” and produced a film that Stephen King called “the most ferociously original horror film of the year” in a review after seeing the film in Cannes. The trio created a delightfully gory film that fans still love.

Jasco Games Looks to Revive Evil Dead 2: The Official Board Game

“Here’s Your New Home” – Ash Williams

Jasco Games LLC, a premier board game and card game publisher based in Las Vegas, Nevada, has created an initiative to help the gaming community at large.  As most are aware, there was a board game campaign on Kickstarter.com posted by Space Goat Productions promising a thematic board game for Evil Dead 2 fans.  The game was funded by 6,143 backers.

Over the last several months, Space Goat Productions has announced that they will not be capable of fulfilling this game to their customers and they have no concrete solution to the problem.  After extensive discussion and planning, Jasco Games CEO and Founder, Jason Hawronsky, and Lynnvander Studios CEO, Thomas Gofton, (no affiliation to Space Goat Productions) have come up with a plan to “revive” the game.

“We will be bringing this game back to life, as fitting as that statement is to this property. Jasco’s plan is to raise funds for a new Evil Dead 2 game, and provide a copy of that game to existing backers of the previous campaign” said Jasco Games CEO and Founder, Jason Hawronsky.

Jasco Games has recently entered into an agreement with the owner of Evil Dead 2 to create the new game.  While Jasco Games does not have access to the original game created by Space Goat Productions, they do have access to several of the components, which means a completely new game will be created using many of the original elements,  all in keeping with Jasco’s high standard of quality and theme.

In Search of Darkness '80s Horror Documentary

CreatorVC is digging into the stuff of nightmares with the recently announced documentary In Search of Darkness which takes us back to the days of VHS and Reagan-era politics as well as the scares and blood splattered horror aisle of your local video rental store.

The film will be starting a Kickstarter campaign on October 4th at 6pm UK time and looks to assemble several icons from the world of horror and experts in the genre to share tales of the terror brought to the screens we grew up watching (and cowering) in front of.

Names already attached to the project include directors Stuart Gordon, Mick Garris, Larry Cohen, Leigh Whannell, and Joe Dante. Actors like Adrienne Barbeau and Dee Wallace join genre experts in talking about movies from the decade of new wave like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Ghoulies, and The Stuff.

In Search of Darkness goes beyond the veil of the films and looks at the decade that inspired them. It was a time that saw the fear of reality leaking into the fears on film with AIDS, crime, and the terror of possible nuclear war be front and center on the 10 o’clock news to give us nightmares before bed. These nightmares would still be there when we woke in the morning and would help shape the celluloid dreams of filmmakers into the stuff of screaming legends.

You Better Run- The Evil Dead and Camera Techniques

From pewpewreviews.wordpress.com:

It’s pretty easy to understand how a camera works as an instrument within the process of filmmaking. It positions itself within a scene, and records an actor’s performance. Sure, sometimes it may pan, tilt and angle itself in weird ways I don’t always understand, (Dutch Angles, I’m looking at you) but for the most part, it provides us with a main viewing point when delving into the world of a film.

But what about when it’s a character. The camera has used on occasion to mimic a characters point of view, particularly within horror films. As the camera pans left and right as our protagonist is in full panic mode, this can engage the audience to an uncomfortable degree, as we are now suddenly placed in the shoes of an individual experiencing intense fear. But as director Sam Raimi shows us in his horror masterpiece The Evil Dead, the camera had a few tricks left up its sleeve. And so became the first time I truly understood the importance of the camera in film, and the impact creative camera wok can have on a film.
