A conversation with cult movie favorite Bruce Campbell

Interview excerpt regarding The Evil Dead:

You must have been motivated because the money you raised to make the film was a sizable figure at that time.

You bet. But we had a plan and we stuck to it. We chipped away at it slowly but surely. One of our friends had a lawyer in the family, and through that connection, we learned how to raise money the right way. We formed a legal entity with investment contracts, and we sold shares. No bullsh*t. This was all above board. For $5,000, you could buy a half share; for $10,000, a full share. $5,000 was the minimum buy-in. My mom bought in – and you know what, every year she gets a check for $11,000, and she's gotten one like that for the last 40 years. I'm proud to say that all the original investors in "Evil Dead" have made 35 times their money back as of today.

Fede Alvarez Producing Next ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Film! [Exclusive]

Last August, Bloody Disgusting exclusively told you that Legendary Entertainment/Legendary Pictures was in the mix to not only develop new films based on Tobe Hooper‘s original slasher masterpiece The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but also a television series.

In October 2017, Lionsgate released Leatherface, a prequel to Texas Chain Saw Massacre that was produced by Millenium Films. Sources told us before the film’s release that rights had turned back over to Kim Henkel, writer and producer on the 1974 slasher classic and also director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994).

A lot has happened since the previous report. Not only are we told that Legendary has closed this deal, but we’re hearing exclusively that Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) is producing for Henkel and Legendary. To clarify, this is not meant as a directing vehicle for Álvarez, who is seeking a filmmaker to attach to the project.

Exclusive: Bill Hader on How He Became a Cinephile and Advice for Fellow Film Fans

Interview Excerpt:

HADER: ... And also, to be honest the movie that made me go from film geek to someone actively trying to make stuff was the first Evil Dead movie, because I saw how they did it. It was a bit like loving music. Like loving Rush or Frank Zappa or whatever and you’re like, “I don’t know how they do it,” and then hearing punk for the first time and going, “Oh I see how they’re doing that super effectively, and I think I can actually possibly do that.” You know? They don’t have a lot of money and they’re figuring it out, and Evil Dead‘s a great movie.

Ellen Sandweiss who plays Cheryl in Evil Dead, her daughter is Jessy Hodges, who plays Lindsey on Barry, Sally’s agent. So when I met her, she was like, “My mom did some acting.” I go, “On what?” “She’s in something called The Evil Dead.” I’m like, “WHAT!? If that movie didn’t exist, I wouldn’t exist!” I told her it’s one of my favorite things. That had a big impact on me.

Bruce Campbell Returns to Royal Oak to Reminisce on “The Evil Dead”

The metro Detroit native has gone on to become a legendary actor, comedian, producer, and more

Nearly 40 years ago, Bruce Campbell and fellow Royal Oak natives Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert raised $350,000 to create The Evil Dead. What began as a low-budget film Campbell starred in and co-executive produced turned into an international sensation. It was dubbed by Stephen King “the most ferociously original horror film of the year,” following its showing at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival debut. The Evil Dead became a trilogy, with a remake of the first installment in 2013. The cult classics also inspired several video games and the comedy series, Ash vs Evil Dead, in which Campbell reprised his character, Ash Williams.

Campbell went on to become a legendary actor, comedian, producer, director, and two-time The New York Times bestselling author. His other notable works include comedy-horror film Bubba Ho-Tep, crime drama Running Time, and the popular television spy series Burn Notice. He’s also lent his voice to several video games.

At 61, Campbell is returning to his hometown for An Evening with Bruce Campbell and Evil Dead 2. Attendees will enjoy stories from his life and career, a live Q&A, and a screening of the Evil Dead sequel. Ages 18+. $35+. Sept. 26. Royal Oak Music Theatre, 318 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak; 248-399-2980; royaloakmusictheatre.com

Bruce Campbell Confirms He’s Done With Evil Dead; Wants To See A Remake Like ‘Evil Dead 2’

Interview Excerpt:

Bruce Campbell: I’d actually like to see a remake that is sorta like an Evil Dead 2. We let the lead character comment on what the hell is going on and let them be funny. Man or woman, you know.

A remake of Evil Dead 2 has never really been attempted. The remake of the first Evil Dead was to be a jumping-off point for more Evil Dead films. Allowing the comedic element of the original Evil Dead 2 would’ve been welcomed to the proposed remake franchise.

Evil Dead: A Nightmare Reimagined (World Premiere at MondoCon 2019)

Info:
Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Sam Raimi’s EVIL DEAD to theaters for the first time in 4K with a terrifying new soundtrack!

This special edition of EVIL DEAD presents the horror classic for the first time with a reimagined score by original composer Joseph LoDuca and a thrilling new 5.1 surround mix created by Marti Humphrey and Jussi Tegelman, the award-winning sound crew behind DRAG ME TO HELL and ASH VS. EVIL DEAD.

Star BRUCE CAMPBELL explains, “Mixing the sound for EVIL DEAD in the early 80’s, we were forced to shove everything into one monaural box. As a result, Joe LoDuca’s great score had to compete unfairly with Kandarian Demons, gore sound effects and lots of screaming. With this new release, Joe can finally have his dynamic composition mixed, balanced and featured properly – for perhaps the first time ever!”

Grindhouse Releasing owner Bob Murawski worked with Raimi to restore EVIL DEAD from the original 16mm camera negatives, and brought the stunning 4K transfer together with LoDuca’s new soundtrack. Murawski is an Oscar-winning film editor whose work with Sam Raimi includes DARKMAN, ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE GIFT, SPIDER MAN 1, 2, & 3, DRAG ME TO HELL, and ASH VS. EVIL DEAD.

“With this fantastic new score, Joe LoDuca proves that he’s the Bartok of blood, the Shostakovich of shock, the Mahler of the macabre.” Murawski said. “The new music, new sound mix and new 4K restoration have elevated EVIL DEAD from the scary to the sublime.”

Bruce Campbell confesses in Requiem for Ash

From 1428elm.com:

Bruce Campbell confesses in the Requiem for Ash edition of his paperback reissue of Hail to the Chin 2. Ahead of the book’s release on Sept. 17, we sat down in Part 1 of an exclusive epic interview with the actor to discuss leaving Ash Williams behind and the beginning of his “Act III.”

Bruce Campbell is heading into an exciting phase of his life, what he terms “Act III.” On Sept. 17, he will be releasing the paperback issue of his New York Times bestselling novel, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor.

This isn’t your ordinary reissue. The actor has added over 50 pages of new material in this “Requiem for Ash” edition. In it, he discusses why he left the character that started his career behind after 40 years and some of the highlights of his European tour.

Interview excerpt regarding a new Evil Dead feature film:

Bruce Campbell: We have a writer and a director locked in. I can only say so much. You know how it is because if its bulls*** I get called a liar.

So, look, here’s what I know. We are actively pursuing it, for 2020 making it, there’s a concept but not a script, we don’t know where we are going to shoot it. We are going to shoot it where we have to shoot it, to get the most bang for our buck. That’s pretty straightforward.

New cast, modern day, it will be a continuation of an Evil Dead story, NO ASH. There is a new, young, handpicked director by Mr. Sam Raimi, so folks should be very excited! This ain’t dead.
Ash is on vacation but we have a lot of stories to tell. The same factors will still work in a movie because the Evil Dead premise is there are no superheroes. Its just people fighting demons and that’s it. So, that can translate to men, women, children, old, young, people of color, it doesn’t matter.

We’re going to try and do it like a really cool, modern Evil Dead.

Sam Raimi on his favourite horror movies

The Evil Dead director and Crawl producer talks about what makes a good horror film and lists his genre favourites

Sam Raimi might not have directed a movie since 2013’s Oz: The Great And Powerful, but he remains one of the industry’s most beloved and respected genre filmmakers. As the creator of the Evil Dead series and the man who rescued Spider-Man from development hell and introduced him to the big screen, Raimi has more than earned his geek stripes. And while he hasn’t stepped behind the camera for a while, he has been supporting other horror filmmakers as a producer, on films such as Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe and, most recently, Alexandre Aja’s gator thriller, Crawl.

'Hung, Drawn And Executed' Collects The Art Of Graham Humphreys In One Gorgeous Book

Best known for producing film posters throughout the '80s, illustrator and visual artist Graham Humphreys has created publicity material for such films as Dream Demon, Basket Case, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and more recently, the '80s horror doc In Search of Darkness.

Finally, after all these years, a stunning hardcover book has been produced by Korero Press that collects some of Humphreys' most iconic works, titled Hung, Drawn and Executed.

The book's description reads, "Graham Humphreys’ career as a poster artist looms large over horror cinema. From designing the iconic Evil Dead poster to Nightmare on Elm Street and House of 1000 Corpses, his work is familiar film audiences around the world. It’s easy to see why his work grabs the attention of horror fans and filmmakers alike, as he continually and systematically sets the bar ever higher in his quest for sheer terror and pure entertainment. With over forty years of experience, he is one of the few contemporary illustrators using the traditional medium of gouache to paint his images. Includes previously unseen work: paintings, drawings and colour studies, as well as additional text by Victoria Price, daughter of Vincent Price and Dacre Stoker.

Whilst most artists now work digitally, Graham remains dedicated to the medium that has supported him throughout his professional career: paint on paper. Current projects include vinyl LP sleeves, posters, private commissions and work for horror film festivals."

The book features a foreword Dacre Stoker, the great-grandnephew of Bram Stoker and the international bestselling co-author of Dracula: The Un-Dead (2009), the official Stoker family-endorsed sequel to Dracula and the prequel Dracul (2018).
