The Evil Dead (1981): Video Nasties, Misspent Youth, and the Ultimate Experience in Grueling Horror

Dave J. Wilson
writes:
It was the summer of 1992, during my school holidays, when I first saw “the ultimate experience in grueling horror.” About nine and a half years had gone by since Sam Raimi’s ‘The Evil Dead’ had its first British cinema release in 1982. It had also been nine years since it was one of the first films to get a ‘video nasty’ label in the United Kingdom.

TV Guide: My Name Is Bruce Review

Jason Buchanan writes:
Few movies possess enough sheer goofball power to make Army of Darkness look like a chamber drama, and though Bruce Campbell's ultra-meta sophomore directorial effort, My Name Is Bruce, may not go quite that far over the top in delivering the kind of slapstick mayhem that's made Campbell one of cult fandom's hottest commodities, it comes damn close.

James Franco and Willem Dafoe (Bill Hader) Wish Sam Raimi a Happy Birthday in Funny or Die Sketch

Matt Goldberg writes:
Before I begin, you should know that today is not Sam Raimi’s birthday (The Spider-Man director was born on October 23rd). But that doesn’t make a special Birthday wish/resentment from James Franco any less funny. Funny or Die has a great sketch playing off Franco’s mirror scene with Willem Dafoe in Spider-Man 2 and 3. And playing Willem Dafoe: the brilliant Bill Hader. The sketch is goofy, fun, and it’s sad/hilarious to see a little post-it on Franco’s dressing room mirror that reads “Spider Man 4??” Also, I think this sketch features the first reference to Crimewave ever.

the New Loud: Get Lost from Jason Kraynek on Vimeo.

Info:
The New Loud gives a nod to director Sam Raimi with their new music video, 'Get Lost'. 'Get Lost' has the band being captured, escaping and running for their lives through a catacomb of hallways by a possessed set of musical instruments. Director jacenK shot the video 'Evil Dead' style using no CG on location in a mixed-use skyscraper in downtown Chicago. 'Get Lost' is the first video to have The New Loud in both non-performance and performance roles.

FEARnet - Saturn Awards 2010: Sam Raimi on 'Oz', Evil Dead 4', and His Future in Horror

Joseph McCabe writes:
Last night I chatted with the always entertaining Sam Raimi at the 2010 Saturn Awards, at which the director's Drag Me to Hell won Best Horror Film. Raimi had a few words to say to me and several other journalists about his anticipated film version of L. Frank Baum's Oz books, as well as whether or not he'll return again to horror, and the chance he'll direct an Evil Dead 4.

On the premature announcement that he'll be helming the Oz film…

I'm talking with Disney and producer Joe Roth about the possibility of doing it. But that's where it's at right now. I think sometimes the news jumps the gun. They hear that somebody's in discussions and they want to report that it's happened. But it hasn't actually happened yet. I'm hoping it will… We've been talking about the possibility of it coming together and I hope it can.

On whether or not he'll return once more to horror…

If I have something that excites me, something that I can bring something to, then yes. If I don't, then no. That's how I know I want to direct a picture. If it excites me and I love it, I get to the set and I know where everything should be. I know where the camera should be. I know what's important about [a] moment, because I understand it and I'm in love with it. And if an actor misses it, I can describe it to him very specifically. But if I don't love something, if I don't understand it thoroughly, I don't really understand how to direct the scene, because I don't understand what's so great about it or what is supposed to be highlighted or diminished in some way. I can't explain to him about the hidden meaning in something if I don't really love it inside and out and understand it.

On whether or not he'll direct a fourth Evil Dead…

I'd love to make one, but I just don't know what the future holds.

Still 6 years old and I’m already hooked on The Evil Dead and yearn for more! The date was March 13, 1987 and Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn was just released into US cinemas. It was a significant date, not only because Evil Dead II was out, but because it was a Friday! How cool would it have been to say that I saw the Evil Dead sequel on Friday the 13th? All of my 6 year old friends would be jealous!

'Evil Dead' Remake, 'Evil Dead IV' Non-News to Tickle Your Pickle

Chris Eggertsen writes:
It's kind of hard being excited for Evil Dead news anymore, especially considering it's the same old non-news we've been hearing from director Sam Raimi over and over again for the past several years. But if you're into having carrots dangled just out of your reach on a regular basis, you can read on for the little he had to say - after winning the Saturn Award for Best Horror Movie on Thursday night - about both the long-rumored Evil Dead remake and the status of Evil Dead 4. Just to warn you...it's slim pickings.

Sam Raimi Talks WORLD OF WARCRAFT Movie on the Red Carpet at the Saturn Awards

Sam Raimi Interview WORLD OF WARCRAFT Movie Saturn Awards 2010 - These bloopers are hilarious

Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub writes:
At tonight’s Saturn Awards here in Los Angeles I had the chance to talk to Sam Raimi on the red carpet. While he’s been rumored to be doing Oz as his next project, when I spoke to him, all he wanted to talk about was World of Warcraft. From the way he spoke, the man is really into the game and it sounded like that’s the project he really wants to do as his next film. I also asked him about the rumors that he could be directing The Hobbit. He seemed to think those were just online rumors and nothing more.

Villains Wiki: Evil Ash (Evil Dead)

Evil Ash is a villain in the Evil Dead movies and is none other than Ash Williams himself, or - to be more accurate - the dark-half of Ash's personality given corporeal form by the evil spirits that he has spent his life battling (known as Deadites in the series).

Evil Ash began his "life" as an entity known as Bad Ash, who appeared out of a mirror during the events of Evil Dead II and proceeded to torment his heroic counterpart - trying to drive him mad - indeed the whole Bad Ash scenario was suggestive of Ash beginning to lose his sanity and could arguably be seen as Ash battling his inner-demons on a literal level.

At any rate after a confrontation of two Bad Ash is "killed" by the original Ash and is never heard of again until the plot of Army Of Darkness - by which time Bad Ash resurrected himself as the more powerful Evil Ash, this incarnation was completely immortal and made himself the leader of the Deadite armies in direct opposition to his heroic counterpart - who was reluctantly acting as a hero to a medieval army of his own (due to time-travel related mishaps).

The zombies in Evil Dead: The Musical never die, and neither, it seems, will the subgenre to which this campfest belongs. The Reely Bored Blog: My Evil Dead: Part I

The year was 1981 and a small movie by the name of The Evil Dead was released to the public. Did I see it on release day? Of course not! I was only 1-year old at the time! Fast forward about five years later and the year is 1986 when I was 5¾ years old. It was June 10th, my older brother’s 7th birthday “bash” and, as my parents would do to ease the anticipations of a horde of 7 & 8 year olds eager to see what gifts my brother received, they suggested we watch a movie.

'Evil Dead' is a bloody campfest

Kerry Lengel writes:
Damon Dering is the King of Camp.

It's certainly not the only thing that Nearly Naked Theatre's artistic director does well. But as a onetime plus-size drag queen whose theatrical vision was inspired by his devotion to "The Rocky Horror Show," camp is in his bones.

Of course, a theater company cannot live on "Rocky Horror" alone, but there are plenty of post-"Rocky" musicals that aspire to the same level of naughty subversion and joyful absurdity.

A few, such as the Nearly Naked hit "Bat Boy: The Musical," reach those heights. Others, including the current season-closing "Evil Dead: The Musical," based on the cult films by Sam Raimi, are a bit more paint-by-numbers. Lots of laughs, but nothing to really challenge either the King of Camp or his audience.

Role-Playing Game - Evil Dead: Swallow This!

Description:
It's the 1990s and the Book of the Dead has just become the New York Time's bestseller. Oprah recommends it. Of course, Oprah's a deadite twin, but she was on TV long enough to tell the gullible masses about how great a book about sacrificing people to demons is. And of course, said gullible masses lap it up like the tripe-reading sheep they are.

One reading of the book caused mass havoc at Knowby's cabin and left several people dead. Imagine kids and adults everywhere reading the book out loud and opening portals to hell all across the globe.

2002 Rewind: Within The Woods - The Evil Dead Prequel

Made in 1978, the thirty-minute film was created to sell investors on the idea of Evil Dead. After gathering 1,600 dollars, a much younger Bruce Campbell, and a few dozen buckets of fake blood and latex, the gang went to some farm during Wintertime to film what'd hopefully lead to a project of a much bigger scope.

Sam Raimi Offered Oz, the Great and Powerful

Vulture has learned that Sam Raimi has been offered the director's chair for Disney’s Oz, the Great and Powerful, a prequel to the 1939 MGM classic The Wizard of Oz. Sam Mendes and Adam Shankman had both been speculated as contenders for the job, but insiders tell us that Raimi received the official offer earlier this morning. The project is written by Mitchell Kapner (The Whole Nine Yards, Romeo Must Die), and Joe Roth — who, of course, used to run Disney's studio back in the 1990s — is producing; Disney wants to start filming sometime this year.

It's unclear if Raimi will accept: Last July, he was hired by Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures to develop a film based on the wildly popular World of Warcraft video game, with the plan being that he'd shoot it after he finished a fourth Spider-Man film at Sony. Of course, in January it became clear that Raimi would not be directing Spider-Man 4, leaving his next picture an open question.

When it comes to geek entertainment, Westerns usually don't rank high on the list. Unless you're a film geek, the Western is a fossil, a symbol of a bygone era. Darkman: BD Review

Grey S. Wears writes:
Years ago, in a different life I was working at Blockbuster video. A man came in and was buying a number of DVDs – one being Darkman. I rang up the purchases and he gave me a credit card. The name on the card read Samuel Raimi. I looked at the man, the card and the man again, “Are you… Sam Raimi?”

Sam Raimi was in my store buying his own film on DVD. I asked him why he couldn’t get a copy from the studio. He said it was just easier to buy it himself.
