'Evil Dead' Comes To Blu-ray Looking Better Than It Ever Has Before

The premiere home video release this week is, without question, the Blu-ray for Sam Raimi's cult classic, "Evil Dead." To put it simply: the movie has never looked better in its shiny, new high-def ensemble. It can be viewed with one of two aspect ratios-- a widescreen 1.85:1 or a fullscreen 1.33:1. Most will automatically opt for the widescreen view, but it's worth noting that the 1.33:1 is the film's original format, as is noted in the all-new audio commentary (more on that in a moment). The fullscreen option looks slightly better overall, but the difference isn't a huge one-- viewer's preference can reign here, and be equally pleased in either case.

Then there's the new commentary. Raimi, star (and living legend) Bruce Campbell and producer Robert Tapert gather for an informative chat about the making of the film. They don't break it down scene by scene, but rather discuss the entire, harrowing four-year process of getting "Evil Dead" made, beginning to end. It nearly killed a few people, quite literally. Especially during the actual shoot, which went down at a backwoods cabin in Tennessee. With no town close by and lots of expensive equipment lying around, one member of the crew had to stay there each night to protect everything. Then there's the cabin, which has a history all its own. They don't get into in during the commentary, so I asked Campbell about it when I spoke to him recently...

B-movie god Bruce Campbell has just about done it all—from lead roles in offbeat indie flicks like Bubba Ho-Tep to cameos in big-budget hits like the Spider-Man series. Not only does he have a broad array of TV work under his belt, including playing the title role in “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.” and his current gig, on USA Network’s popular spy series, “Burn Notice,” but he’s also the published author of two books (with a third on the way). MTV News: Bruce Campbell Reflects On 'The Evil Dead,' 'Bruce Versus Frankenstein' And Why He's So Awesome

Sam Raimi's classic horror film "The Evil Dead" arrives on Blu-ray next Tuesday, exactly one week from today. In addition to a lovely-looking hi-def transfer and what is apparently the first available version of the movie in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio -- which is actually full screen, compared to the more standard 1.85:1 widescreen -- there's also a bonus DVD of behind-the-scenes content and an all-new audio commentary with Raimi, star Bruce Campbell and producer Robert Tapert.

The commentary is pretty stellar. Making "The Evil Dead" was a four-year process for these guys, 12 weeks of which were spent in what sounds like the absolute hell of shooting at that cabin. Joking statements are made comparing the experience there to that of Vietnam, and the anecdotes the shared range from appalling to downright frightening. Raimi, Campbell and Tapert have all known each other for a very long time, and that relationship really comes out in their back-and-forth banter.

Campbell was kind enough to take some time to chat with MTV News this past weekend, and he seemed very excited to be talking about this movie that was so instrumental in launching his career... and not just because it was his first feature.

Interview: Bruce Campbell of The Evil Dead - Disc Dish

It has been nearly 30 years since Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead (1981) launched the film career of actor Bruce Campbell, whose portrayal of a nice guy vacationer named Ash who finds himself fighting for his life against a horde of murderous zombies has since become modern horror movie legend. (It’s a legend that continued in Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1991), the third entry in the Evil Dead trilogy.)

Today, Campbell is a regular on USA TV show Burn Notice and doing voice work for the likes of animated movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

The Aug. 31 debut of The Evil Dead on limited edition Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay (win a copy here) is closing in — like so many advancing zombies. To that end, we managed to wangle an interview with Mr. Campbell about the film and its place in his life.

As the title "Evil Dead: The Musical" not-so-subtly suggests, audiences should not expect anything remotely serious in the show that opens Friday night at the Venice Theatre Cabaret.

After all, "it doesn't take itself seriously at all," said director Allan Kollar. "It also is one of the funniest shows I've ever been involved with. The music is wonderful, sort of campy and over the top, like most bad horror films.

The musical is inspired by a series of "Evil Dead" movies, originally directed by Sam Raimi, that starred Bruce Campbell, now a fixture on the USA series "Burn Notice." Raimi went on to direct three "Spider-Man" films.

It's Mine!: The Evil Dead Fake Blood Recipe

This is the recipe used for all the fake blood in The Evil Dead, per Bruce Campbell's autobiography. Now I've always made my fake blood with Karo syrup and red food coloring, but I've never used the creamer or blue before. I have been known to mix in a couple cups of bourbon though! But you could probably do without it if you're going for virgin blood. Get it? Like a Shirley Temple!
