Happy Halloween from Evil Dead News!

The 1973 Olds 88 in Raimi’s “Evil Dead” trilogy isn’t just any classic—it’s “The Classic”

The first-generation Olds 88, which debuted in 1949, was a proto-muscle car, arguably America’s first: it was fast and lightweight but it had a powerful engine. Its streamlined design, along with its overhead-valve, high-compression “Rocket” V-8 engine, made the car a force to be reckoned with, and it dominated the NASCAR circuits. By the mid-1950s, other cars outpaced it, but the 88 remained Oldsmobile’s top-selling line through 1974.

But the car’s long, impressive history isn’t what inspires Sam Raimi’s love for the car; it’s the history he’s shared with his own Delta 88. “The Classic” wasn’t the best, coolest car ever made, but it was Raimi’s first car, and a car so beloved that Sam Raimi transformed it into a cinematic icon.

‘Dead By Dawn’: Watch the Impressive, Gory ‘Evil Dead’ Fan Film That Was Made in One Night for $200

While we wait for the next installment in the Evil Dead film franchise – it’s in the works, though we have no idea what form it will take – fan Courtlan Gordon has gotten together with his friends to make their own fan film set within the Evil Dead universe, titled Dead By Dawn.

What’s most impressive about Dead By Dawn is that it was filmed across a single night with a $200 budget, and yet it looks like a much more polished production than many films with considerably higher budgets. It also taps into that Evil Dead vibe quite well – particularly the vibe of Fede Alvarez’s gruesome remake – with some real nasty bits of practical gore.

The entire project came together, Gordon tell us, in just 72 hours!

Sam Raimi-Directed Horror Pic In Works At Columbia Pictures

Columbia Pictures has acquired an untitled horror project that will be produced and directed by Sam Raimi, whose helming credits include genre staples The Evil Dead and Drag Me to Hell.

Details are slim on the script, which will be written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, but it will be a thriller set on an island. The writers previously penned 2009’s Friday the 13th reboot, and have been working on AGBO Films’ A Christmas Carol and Legendary’s The Good, the Evil & the Undead.

The latest news marks a reteam for Raimi and Columbia, which released the director’s three Spider-Man movies in the 2000s with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. Raimi of late has been focused on producing (Crawl, TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, the upcoming reboot of The Grudge) via his Raimi Productions; his last directing credit is 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful.

Bruce Campbell on Austin hipsters, signing an urn of ashes and a favorite scary movie

If you don’t recognize the name, surely you recognize the chin.

Actor Bruce Campbell is best known for playing Ash, a reluctant slayer of demonic zombies in longtime friend Sam Raimi’s cult classic “Evil Dead” franchise. For almost 40 years, he fought back the armies of darkness in three films and a Starz TV series, “Ash Vs Evil Dead.” After the show ended last year, Campbell said he’s retiring from the role.

The actor’s had a wild career: playing Elvis in 2002′s “Bubba Ho-Tep,” cameos in all of Raimi’s “Spider-Man” movies and a long stint on USA Network’s “Burn Notice.” Campbell has a new memoir out, “Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor.” He’s also coming to Austin’s Paramount Theatre for “An Evening With Bruce Campbell,” which will feature a screening of 1992 film “Army of Darkness,” on Oct. 23.

Bruce Campbell Confirms That a “New Filmmaker” Has Been Chosen to Direct the Next ‘Evil Dead’ Movie

Excerpt regarding a new Evil Dead film:

Will it be another remake of the original film with a new Ash? A sequel to the original film without Ash? Or maybe a sequel to Fede Alvarez‘s remake? At this time, we do not know.

Which brings us to this past weekend at the Rock and Shock convention in Massachusetts. During his panel, Campbell confirmed one thing: a new filmmaker is taking over.

“It’s okay to pass it along to another idiot to try and stop evil from destroying the world,” Campbell told the crowd, letting them know he’s okay with a new Ash or at least a new Ash-like character being brought to the screen. “One idiot tried – he did pretty good. It’s time to let other innocent people with no skills try to save the world. And there’s more stories to tell.”

Campbell continued, “So we think we have a cool premise. We have a new filmmaker that Sam Raimi has hand chosen. So he’s very involved in it. Will be involved in the story. And we’ll try and make sure the actors don’t completely suck. And then we’re gonna make another one, yeah. There’s lots of stories…creepy books…lots of people to torment.”

The Evil Dead Reimagined Review: New Score Enlivens Classic Horror Movie | Beyond Fest 2019

One of the highlights of this year’s Beyond Fest, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, was the screening of The Evil Dead: Reimagined, a version of Sam Raimi’s classic low budget horror movie with a new score by original composer Joe LoDuca and an updated sound mix, supervised by Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski. All of this, combined with a 4K restoration of the film’s visuals made for the best version imaginable of The Evil Dead and a memorable night at one of the country’s best genre film festivals.

Preceding the film was a live performance by a chamber orchestra conducted by LoDuca. They played cues from the original score, in addition to ones from the new score and even a short original composition written specifically for the night’s event. That all put the audience in the mood for what was to come.

Groovy! Bruce Campbell finally shows up to Rock and Shock at DCU and Palladium

WORCESTER — All right, you primitive screw-heads, listen up!

“Groovy” Bruce Campbell is coming to Rock and Shock this weekend (Saturday and Sunday only) at the DCU Center to bury Ashley “Ash” Williams, not to praise him.

The chainsaw-wielding,“boomstick”-carrying, wisecracking, Deadite-slaying hero of the “Evil Dead” movies and Starz network’s original series “Ash vs Evil Dead” is no more, according to the 61-year-old Michigan.

Last year’s finale of “Ash vs Evil Dead” marked the end of Ash and the “Evil Dead” universe, as far as Campbell is concerned, so much so that he added a “Requiem for Ash” chapter in the paperback version of his New York Times best-selling autobiography, “Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor,” in which he says, “Out of respect for my ability to properly portray a particular character, I’m retiring Ash, not retiring from acting. I’m retiring from a very technically demanding type of acting, not the craft itself.”
