Zombies getting married and wandering Seattle

Bride Casey Russell and groom Nathan Dooley share a kiss as they are married by B-movie actor Bruce Campbell. (Photo by Joshua Trujillo/seattlepi.com)

Joshua Trujillo writes:

If you haven't heard by now here is your warning: There are zombies wandering the streets of Seattle this weekend for ZomBcon. And on Saturday two of those "zombies" were married in a ceremony at the EMP and Science Fiction Museum.

The ceremony was performed by legendary B-movie actor Bruce Campbell. And after the marriage of undead creatures, Campbell performed a renewal of vows for about a dozen other couples, also in their undead finest.

The couple, bride Casey Russell and groom Nathan Dooley of Seattle, drove away from the ceremony in the perfect car for a pair of zombies, a hearse.

Below are photos from the wedding and from a zombie-themed prom on Friday night. Go here for a photo gallery.

The king of B-movies

Craig Sailor
writes:
If Bruce Campbell seems pigeonholed by his outsized reputation as king of the B-movies, you wouldn’t know it from his resume.

His career has taken him from the low-budget horror debut of director (and boyhood friend) Sam Raimi’s “The Evil Dead” to his current stint as wisecracking sidekick Sam Axe on the popular USA Network’s “Burn Notice.” In between he’s provided a voice for the animated “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” starred in the Elvis-battles-a-mummy-in-a-nursing-home dark comedy “Bubba Ho-Tep,” and developed an army of darkly serious fans.

This weekend, Campbell will present a newly restored 35mm print of “The Evil Dead” at Zombcon 2010 in Seattle.

Zombie killer Bruce Campbell stalks convention

Marian Liu writes:
Thousands of zombies take over Seattle this Halloween weekend!

But don't worry, Bruce Campbell will be on hand.

Known best as the zombie killer from the cult favorite "Army of Darkness," the 52-year-old actor is a guest speaker at ZomBcon, a convention that features workshops, screenings and a zombie prom. Campbell speaks at 3 p.m. Saturday at the AMC Pacific Place movie theater in downtown Seattle. The convention also hosts other notables from the zombie world, such as George Romero, Malcolm McDowell, Max Brooks, Steven L. Frank and Kevin Hamedani.

Bruce Campbell Updates on Sam Axe TV-Movie: What to expect from the Burn Notice prequel

Eric Goldman writes:
Last night in Los Angeles, Bruce Campbell took part in a Q&A after a screening of his classic movie, Army of Darkness. Asked about the upcoming TV-Movie focusing on Campbell's Burn Notice character, Sam Axe, Campbell noted he was currently working on having "less weight and darker hair" for the project, since it was a prequel.

Said Campbell, "It's how Sam Axe got to Miami, so it's his last mission as a military guy. We're shooting in Bogota, Colombia in January. It will probably come on before the series comes back on the air."

Campbell jokingly remarked that Burn Notice fans better not think they can skip the TV-Movie, adding, "Matt Nix, clever man that he is, who created the show, he's putting information in the TV-Movie that if you don't get that information, you're lost! So it's not for my sake. You should watch the TV-movie to be completely clued in. Otherwise you might be a little lost in Season 5, that's all I'm saying!"

Top 10 Deadites from the "Evil Dead" Series

SweetHenrietta writes:
One of the first things you’ll learn about me is that I am a huge Evil Dead fan. Whenever somebody refers to a deadite as a zombie, I develop an eye twitch. For those unfamiliar with the term, a deadite is a person – living or dead – who has become possessed by the Unseen Force. These creatures are exclusive to the Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series. Zombies, on the other hand, are walking corpses – they are never living and their condition cannot be reversed.

I love zombies, but deadites are really under-appreciated. Can a zombie turn your friends evil without even touching them? Can a zombie take the form of your mother and sing your favorite childhood lullaby? Can a zombie swallow your soul? I rest my case. The following is a list of my favorites from the ED series, in descending order.

I recently designed a minimalist poster for the first Evil Dead film, based on the infamous "pencil" scene.

The poster can be seen on my portfolio site on this page: http://www.ericslager.com/print.html by clicking on the bloody pencil icon!

10 things we love about Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead - Den of Geek

Ryan Lambie writes:
As The Evil Dead makes its debut on Blu-ray, we look back at the ten things we love about Sam Raimi’s horror classic…

In 1981, young director Sam Raimi unleashed his debut horror feature, The Evil Dead, on an unsuspecting populace. Gradually amassing a huge cult following in the years after its release, the film's anarchic violence delighted fans and horrified Mary Whitehouse.

Here are ten reasons why, almost three decades on, The Evil Dead is still a genre masterpiece...

Fangoria - An EVIL DEAD wedding!

Allan Dart
writes:
To “undeath” do us part... EVIL DEAD star and (newly ordained) minister Bruce Campbell (!) is set to marry a Seattle couple and preside over a mass zombie renewal of vows at the EMP/SFM at the Seattle Center as part of ZomBcon International, which is taking place in Seattle, WA, October 29-31.

Seattle couple Nathan Dooley and Casey Russell are joining Campbell and the original cast of the EVIL DEAD to perform their actual wedding in full costume. After the ceremony, attending couples can renew their wedding vows with Campbell and the cast in a special mass ceremony that will follow the wedding. The attendees will be exchanging their wedding vows in Seattle’s Sky Church at the Experience Music Project Museum. The wedding serves as the centerpiece event for The Evil Dead Smack Down film gala that will screen the Director’s Cut of THE EVIL DEAD with a new 35mm print.

All three EVIL DEAD films will play at ZomBcon, and Campbell, The Ladies of THE EVIL DEAD, Ted Raimi, Danny Hicks and Timothy Patrick Quill will be in attendance for a new fan convention celebrating the Dead at ZomBcon, the world’s first-ever “zombie culture” convention.

The EVIL DEAD wedding is set for Saturday, October 30 at 5 p.m. at the EMP/SFM at the Seattle Center. Limited seating and ceremony will play host to one couple and 100 married couples for the sequel—a mass zombie renewal of vows in true EVIL DEAD fashion. Fans interested in participating can register to renew their vows on their website or by emailing evildeadwedding@gmail.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for full details. Space is limited, and every couple must be dressed as zombies or they won’t be admitted to the ceremony.

The featured guests at ZomBcon International 2010 include filmmaker George A. Romero, Campbell and WORLD WAR Z author Max Brooks. The event will feature over 100 panels, workshops, film screenings, a giant gala Halloween costume party, a zombie prom, some of the biggest names in the horror genre and more.

Seven Reasons Why Bruce Campbell Is the Ultimate Convention Guest

Liz Ohanesian writes:
There was a lot going on Saturday afternoon inside the Burbank Airport Marriott for this year's Weekend of Horrors convention. Artists sketched guests as creepy caricatures. The stars of Dario Argento's films signed autographs. There was a costume contest as well as a gallery featuring horror-themed art from thirteen artists, including Dienzo, Todd Robey and Clint Carney. It was a great convention. But, at 5 p.m., it almost seemed as though the con had stopped, that most of the guests inside the Marriott had filed into one large auditorium for what would be the highlight of the day-- Bruce Campbell.

Right now, Campbell is best known for playing Sam Axe on the cable TV hit Burn Notice. But, in this room, where the audience is clearly filled with long-time fans, he's known for movies like My Name is Bruce and Bubba Ho-Tep and television roles like Autolycus on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess as well the lead character in the short-lived series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. More importantly, though, Campbell is beloved for his role as Ash in the Evil Dead series.

If you're a fan of horror movies, you've probably seen, and may well have loved, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Based on those movies, it's no wonder that Campbell drew a massive crowd at a genre convention such as this. But, there's more to it than that.

Is 'Army of Darkness' the 'Jackass' of horror films?

John Ervin writes:
Among the many horror offerings coursing through the Twin Cities entertainment blood stream this Halloween season, the most unique has to be director Sam Raimi's 1992 pageant of blood Army of Darkness, showing this Friday and Saturday nights at the Riverview Theater. Though filled with the gore, blood, and bile that are crucial to the genre, Army of Darkness, with its dark humor, bizarre action sequences, and, especially, its sickeningly inspired stunt work, could be seen as a precursor to Jackass, whose latest chronicle of death-, and taste-defying feats is currently also splattering across movie screens.

Sam Raimi's 'Oz The Great And Powerful' Pits Robert Downey Jr. Against Three Sexy Witches!

Josh Wigler
writes:
Sam Raimi broke every single "World of Warcraft" fan's hearts earlier this month with the announcement that "Oz the Great and Powerful" would be his next movie, but he may have had good reason — if a recently revealed plot synopsis is at all accurate, "Oz" is going to be one heck of a fun time at the movies.

Pajiba has an extensive report on the alleged plot for "Oz," a film that focuses on Robert Downey Jr.'s early days as the Wizard. True to RDJ form, the character sounds like a happy mixture of Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes with some magic thrown in for good measure.

According to Pajiba, "Oz" focuses on, well, Oz, the great and powerful wizard who is actually something of a con man. Described as "a snake-oil salesman posing as a magician," Oz begins the movie on the run from an angry husband who just discovered that the magician has been sleeping with his wife.

Once he arrives in the Land of Oz, the "fast-talking huckster who wears a velveteen frock coat" (an easily imagined Downey-approved fashion item) falls in love with Glinda the Good Witch and teams up with her to battle the wicked witches of the east and west, Evanora and Theodora. Theodora, it turns out, used to be a good witch, but once Oz refuses her sexual advances, she's convinced by her sister Evanora to join forces in an effort to rule all of Oz.

How to reboot Evil Dead

Richard Rose writes:
In the 18 years since Army of Darkness was released, there has been much talk of a fourth Evil Dead Film.

Raimi's original remains to this day one of the most relentless, disturbing and cheap-looking horror films of all time. It's first sequel set the benchmark for how far a horror-comedy could go and is considered by many to be the best of the trilogy, while the third, widely regarded as the weakest, is a fun, if muddled romp through a zombie-infested medieval England.

But what would an Evil Dead film for the 21st century hold?

The Evil Dead, The Living Dead and the dead wrong

Phelim O'Neill writes:

Hard to believe now, but back in the early 1980s Britain was under attack. A sustained attack from a foe more insidious and corrupting than anything that had assailed our shores before; a demonic force that destroyed our mental health, that could deprave all who came into contact with it. Highly scientific studies proved beyond all doubt the peril we were all in, especially our children and even our pets. This was the menace that came from something called a "Video Nasty".

There are two things you should know about that opening paragraph: firstly, everything in it was at one time believed by our leaders of the day (yes, even the bit about pets). And second, they were completely wrong on every count. It was a shameful period in our recent history, but not for the reasons they would have you think. Now, with the release of the incredibly informative and entertaining DVD Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide, for the first time the complete gory story can be told.

NYCC | Campbell Takes Questions, Insults Fans (And Is Loved For It)

Adam Rosenberg writes:
A Bruce Campbell panel, or question-and-answer session, or whatever you want to call it, is an exercise in humiliation. The veteran actor, star of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise and the hit cable-TV series Burn Notice, is a true-blue wiseass. It’s clear he appreciates his success and the fans who got him there, but it’s equally clear there’s no small amount of playful derision for the geek culture that his career has become inextricably tied to. So of course when Campbell stepped onstage Sunday at New York Comic Con to take questions from hundreds of attendees, most in garish costumes, the event had more in common with a stand-up comedy performance than a deep-dive discussion of the actor’s long and colorful career. Since so much of what was discussed is a “you-had-to-be-there” sort of thing, what follows is more of a textual “highlights reel” from the Q&A session …

Campbell On More Evil Dead
“Will Ash ever make a return to the big screen…? Boy, I sure hope so.” – lots of sarcasm there – “Those movies were a pain in the ass to make. I’m a middle-aged man. I’ll be like Tobey Maguire, I’m just gonna get digitized. It’ll be me fighting somebody, somebody else. Sam Raimi’s making too much money now, dawg. Do you think he’s going to go back to those days? He’s looking at the glory days. He gets an extra two zeros on his paychecks now. So … sorry, sir. No, I don’t know. Maybe when I’m in the rest home and Sam has one eye missing, maybe we’ll do it.

It's hard not to think of Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD (made a full 7 years later) when you see this scene from THE POSSESSED (aka Help! I'm Possessed!) from 1974. An unseen force chases it's victim through the woods, she finds refuge in an old cabin, stunning special effects scare all who view it. (OK, maybe not that last part).

‘Evil Dead’ actress: Michigan’s film industry is alive

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Aspiring filmmakers don’t need big bucks, says Michigan State University alumna Betsy Baker, best known as queen of gore in the shoestring-budget film “Evil Dead.” She returns to campus for the Oct. 15 musical debut of the 1970s cult classic.

Nor do they need to jet to New York City or Los Angeles to launch their careers: Michigan’s burgeoning film industry offers the resources to take center stage.

Those are the messages Baker will communicate to students while attending their movement and makeup classes, hosting acting workshops and riding on the “Evil Dead: The Musical” Homecoming float. She’ll also host a public acting workshop and a free screening of “Evil Dead.”

Kinder-Editorial :: Kinderpal Erczilla on the Death of Blockbuster Video & the Awesomeness of Evil Dead 2

writes:
I come to both bury Blockbuster Video and faintly praise it. With Blockbuster Video filing for bankruptcy protection, it signals the final nail in the coffin of brick and mortar video stores. Blockbuster itself signaled the end of the greatest video stores of all, the mom and pop owned video store.

My appreciation of all things horror was heavily influenced by the gamble that was picking out a video off of the shelves of the local video store. The proprietors hardly had a clue of the deviance and insanity contained inside some of their tapes. Often the artwork would creatively disguise the crapfest one was about to rent, as in the case of RETURN TO HORROR HIGH or BLACK ROSES. The best moments were when one was able to mine through the stacks of slasher movies and ALIEN rip offs and discover a movie that would rock your socks off.

My older sister and I had such a moment when we picked up EVIL DEAD 2 off of the shelf of our local video store.
