Hail to the Chin! Bruce Campbell talks Ash, new book, and Fan Expo

W. Andrew Powell writes:

Bruce Campbell is one of my favorite horror icons. He’s fun, acerbic, and honest in the most down-to-earth way possible. This week he arrives in Toronto for Fan Expo, and I had the chance to speak with him about his new book, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor, the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead, and what it’s like meeting fans. Campbell even had some advice for anyone coming out to meet him this weekend.

Make Your Own ‘Evil Dead 2’ Chainsaw Hand for $20!

How? With a coffee container, of course!

If you’re looking to dress up as Ash Williams for Halloween or any other event, you’re probably thinking that it’s going to cost you a pretty penny to complete the look with one of his groovy chainsaw hands. Furthermore, you’re probably thinking it’ll require build skills you may not have.

Well, you’d be wrong on both counts.

Bruce Campbell Taught Me Four Lessons About Family in 17 Minutes

The B Movie Legend has A-list advice.

Joshua David Stein writes:

Most people know Bruce Campbell. Full stop. For some his massively chinned visage will forever recall the pulpy, bloody glory of Evil Dead. For others, his hypermasculine squint will forever recall Brisco from The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.. Youngsters and guppies will be familiar with his scenery consumption on USA’s totally ridiculous Burn Notice. Fewer people may know Campbell for his writing, but he’s a solid scribbler and his new (second) memoir, Hail to the Chin, is worth a read. It contains wisdom. Bruce contains wisdom. I know this first hand because we spoke for precisely 17 minutes by phone in the middle of Campbell’s 35 city book tour and he said several things that stopped me in my tracks.

Evil Dead: The La Casa Spinoffs and More!

The Unofficial Evil Dead Sequels And Spinoffs!

Adam Popovich writes:

How many times have you watched the trilogy of Evil Dead films and wished somehow, someway, that there were more? Chances are you have if you’re reading, this and the good news is, technically, there is a way to kinda sorta see a new Evil Dead movie, if you simply ignore all logic and plot connections, and adhere strictly to titling. If that kind of thing intrigues you, then I’ll be happy to inform you that in Italy, there are SEVEN films in The Evil Dead series, although it’s certainly stretching it to the downright breaking point.

SYFY and Alamo team-up for Close Encounters, Evil Dead II screenings

From syfy.com:

As we celebrate our 25th anniversary here at SYFY, we’ve teamed up with Alamo Draft House for a few movie screenings. If you’re considering a geeky road trip, these could be well worth a long weekend.

First up, we have a September 2 screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which will take place during a one-night-only campout (complete with a camp fire) at Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Even better? The film was recently remastered in glorious 4K resolution, so it’ll look better than it ever has on the big screen. If you’re not able to make this special screening, the 4K restoration and Director’s Cut will also be hitting theaters nationwide for a limited engagement to start September, so be sure to check your local listings.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and we’ll be heading back to the cabin for a screening of Sam Raimi’s comedy horror classic Evil Dead 2 on September 14. In honor of the film’s 30th anniversary, we’ll be literally heading into the woods of Austin, Texas for an outdoor screening of the bloody good horror classic. We’re even bringing star Bruce Campbell along to keep us same, and everyone in attendance gets a free copy of Campbell’s latest book Hail to the Chin.

A B-Movie Actor Makes It Big on the Best-Seller List

WARP IT REAL GOOD: Fifteen years ago, when Bruce Campbell published his first autobiography, “If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor,” expectations were modest. Getting it published had already been an ordeal. Even though his then-agent, John Hodgman (now known as a comic writer and actor), was such a fan of Campbell’s that he initially thought the book proposal should be an easy sell, it was still the early days of the internet, and connoisseurs of Campbell’s deeply weird performances in “The Evil Dead” and “Army of Darkness” weren’t yet mobilized into a cultural force. As Hodgman recalls in his introduction to Campbell’s sequel, “Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor,” when a book editor finally bit, he was taking a gamble based on what Campbell had shown everybody: “You can cultivate a good and profitable artistic career by knowing your audience and keeping them close,” Hodgman writes. “Soon we would all have to do that, because mass monoculture was largely not going to exist anymore.”

“Hail to the Chin” enters the hardcover nonfiction list this week at No. 8, touching down between Dinesh D’Souza at No. 7 and Ta-Nehisi Coates at No. 9 (which tells you everything you need to know about the “mass monoculture” not existing anymore). Campbell writes that this new book took him 15 years because he needed to collect anecdotes, like the time he almost lost use of his right arm after nicking himself on a rusty piece of metal while shooting in Bulgaria: “Jesus, I thought to myself. I’m going to be permanently maimed because of a movie called ‘Man With the Screaming Brain’?”

Swollen arm, screaming brain — what about the chin? “Reviewers would always do, ‘The lantern-jawed Bruce Campbell, the square-jawed Bruce Campbell,’” he told the hosts of the “Sway in the Morning” radio show in August. “I’m starting to just warp it, so it doesn’t make any sense anymore.”

Evil Dead: A Spotlight On Related Media!

Adam Popovich writes:

Tired of re-watching the trilogy and series? Here's some Evil Dead media you might be interested in checking out!

Maybe my age is starting to show, but I distinctly remember a time when there was a serious drought of any and all news regarding Evil Dead. That all changed once Sam Raimi became Mr. Spiderman, and now 15 years later we’re still feeling the wonderful trickle down of that glorious change, as now, fans of Evil Dead are submerged in a veritable flood of glorious Evil Dead news, rumors and projects both announced and unannounced.

The fact of the matter is that it has never been a better time to be a fan of Evil Dead, simply because there is unprecedented access and demand for new franchise content. The original trilogy just isn’t enough, and the TV series Ash VS Evil Dead merely whets the appetite for more. While I’m sure fans are well aware of any and all new movie/TV deals coming into the fray, there’s still a glut of offerings to choose from, from all walks of the media aisle. Today we’re gonna shine a spotlight on a few Evil Dead related pieces of entertainment that aren’t the aforementioned trilogy of films, or the spectacular TV series.

In Your Eyes: The POV Shots of Sam Raimi’s ‘Evil Dead’ Trilogy

Here’s looking at you, Ash.

Sam Raimi’s never met a POV shot he didn’t like, at least not when he was making his Evil Dead trilogy. Over the course of The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness, we’re momentarily transported into the perspective of arrows, bullets, cars, and a whole host of nefarious entities like zombies, animated skeletons, and unknowable forces. Raimi presents his stories from all sides including the inside, never settling for just one take on the situation, instead navigating us through his plot with ever-shifting vantage points and ways of processing the horrors and hilarity unfolding.

Bruce Campbell Keeps His Chin Up

Bruce Campbell has been a cult actor for more than 30 years. He has been riding a career wave that has encompassed everything from B-movie-actor extraordinaire to author of 2002’s surprise bestseller If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor to, most recently, semi-mainstream TV success.

Campbell, who appears Friday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Rookwood Pavilion to support his new memoir Hail to the Chin, made his name playing Ash, the lead character in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead film trilogy, crafty horror adventures that were as humorous as they were terrifying. Campbell and Raimi grew up together in the suburbs of Detroit dreaming of making movies, and 36 years after the debut of the original Evil Dead, each is still doing what he loves.

Actor Bruce Campbell offers an engaging master class in schlock

“Frankly, I can never be far enough from Hollywood,” wrote lantern-jawed Bruce Campbell in his 2001 memoir “If Chins Could Kill.”

Now, in this variety pack of “further confessions” titled “Hail to the Chin,” the self-styled “B movie actor” recounts trading smog-clogged L.A. for a lavender-carpeted hillside in southern Oregon, then shooting films and TV series in Bulgaria, Colombia, New Zealand and his native Michigan.

“I’ve been called a ham actor,” Campbell says with felony-level understatement. He loves to wink at the camera, and in the course of playing characters as diverse as Elvis, Reagan and Santa Claus, he has chewed up more scenery than Godzilla and Rodan combined. (Sometimes literally: His character in the “Evil Dead” horror franchise, which made Campbell a cult icon in the 1980s, sports a chain saw as a prosthetic hand.)

All of the blood and gore of the Starz/Lionsgate horror series Ash vs. Evil Dead Season 2 is now available on Blu-ray and DVD with a slew of fun extras, including audio commentaries, eight behind-the-scenes featurettes and a “Fatality Mash-Up.” The season saw Ash (Bruce Campbell) return to his hometown of Elk Grove, where he discovered that Ruby (Lucy Lawless) was also now a victim of evil and in need of help, and things were left in a way that should make Season 3 very interesting when it premieres.

What Bruce Campbell Thought Of Ash Vs Evil Dead's Most Disgusting Season 2 Scene

Nick Venable writes:

Horror TV is as alive and well as it's ever been, even if not all of the characters involved are so lucky to be breathing. On Starz's hilariously gory Ash vs. Evil Dead, star Bruce Campbell is constantly dealing with all manner of dead things, and when CinemaBlend spoke with the permanently groovy star about the show ahead of Season 2 being released on Blu-ray today, I'd asked if any of the insane scenes managed to creep him out. Bruce Campbell says he won't play Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep sequel

As befits a movie in which Bruce Campbell plays an Egyptian mummy-battling Elvis Presley and the late, great African-American actor Ossie Davis portrays John F. Kennedy, the 2002 horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep has achieved the status of beloved cult classic. Fans of director Don Coscarelli’s movie have long waited for the proposed sequel, Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She Vampires, which at one point looked likely to find Campbell reprising his role of Presley and Paul Giamatti playing the King’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. But when Campbell dropped by the Sirius XM studios to appear on the EW Channel’s Entertainment Weirdly show, the actor made clear that he had no intention of appearing in a sequel.

Bruce Campbell Wanted to Make a Dick Tracy TV Series

In the late 1990s, the great Bruce Campbell found himself in Disney's orbit, appearing in the 1997 big screen version of The Love Bug and seven episodes of Ellen on ABC. During this period, Mr. Campbell landed a development deal with Disney, which unfortunately didn't lead to any major starring roles or projects, but one property under Disney's control caught his eye as he was browsing through a list of properties under their control: the most famous comic strip detective in history, Dick Tracy. This story comes to light in Bruce Campbell's latest book, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor, the delightful sequel to his equally delightful If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor (if you haven't read this, what are you waiting for?).

"[Dick Tracy] would make a great weekly TV show," Campbell writes in Hail to the Chin, "very stylized, with fifty years' worth of stories already laid out in comic book form. I also thought I could have pulled of a convincing, if slightly snarky, Dick Tracy."

Bruce Campbell says Ash vs. Evil Dead season 3 gets 'completely crazy'

From ew.com:

“We’re hoping it will be a game-changer,” teased Campbell of season 3, whose premiere date has yet to be made public. “We felt it was time to explore a little more of Ash Williams’ myth, because he is foretold in an ancient book — this is not me, this is the character talking — and it was time to crack into that. He’s not just a loser in a trailer park. He is foretold. So, why? Why him? We start to get some answers, and things get completely crazy — in episode 10, hopefully people will pick their jaw up off the floor. That’s what we’re going for. Nothing will be the same if we come back for season 4. And yet, if they don’t bring us back, I think we’ve done a nice little ba-dink.”

Dalton Ross writes:

Disgusting. Horrifying. Vomit-inducing. You know, the good stuff. That’s what we depend on when it comes to Ash vs Evil Dead. Stuff like people pushing brains back into other people’s heads. Or folks ripping their own faces off. Or ladies blasting possessed puppets to smithereens. I’m sorry… what was that last one?

In any event, season 2 of Ash vs Evil Dead provided all that and more, and now you can see every gruesome second thrown together into one handy-dandy supercut. It’s one of the featurettes that can be found on the upcoming season 2 Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD sets being released on Aug. 22, but we’ve got the exclusive early look at it right here and right now.

The Elvis Dead with Rob Kemp

From chortle.co.uk:

In his Edinburgh show, Rob Kemp re-enacts The Evil Dead 2 – as if Elvis Presley was in the lead role.

And in this extract, recorded at Chortle's Fast Fringe, the comic re-enacts one of the most gruesome scenes from the movie - when lead character Ash Williams takes a chainsaw to his own hand after it becomes all possessed by a demon.

All the while, he sings You Are Always On My Mind, with the lyrics changed to: 'Now I'm sawing off my hand'

Kemps's show. The Elvis Dead is on at Heroes @ Monkey Barrel at midnight and is one of the cult hits of the festival.

How Bruce Campbell Feels About Working Without A Hand In Ash Vs Evil Dead

Modern television shows are able to pull off what the medium couldn't even dream of 20 years ago, both in technological wizardry and in subject matter. Starz's boundary-demolishing Ash vs Evil Dead, for example, gives audiences things that can't be found elsewhere on TV, including a lead character whose missing right hand is often fitted with a roaring chainsaw. The horror-comedy's inimitable star Bruce Campbell recently spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of Ash vs Evil Dead's Season 2 Blu-ray release, and the actor talked about how that process goes these days when I asked if he enjoyed the finale bringing Ash's hand back.

Interview: Dana DeLorenzo Has a Lot of Rage Left in ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ Season 3

The home video release of Ash vs. Evil Dead, Season 2 is just around the corner. In celebration of that fact, we got to speak with the cast who let us in on their characters’ respective journeys during this season and in the season to come. Warning: There is a slight spoiler warning for those of you who have yet to catch up on Ash vs. Evil Dead, for some reason.

In Season 2, Ash and the gang are forced to leave Jacksonville and travel to Ash’s home town of Elk Grove, Michigan. There, they confront Ruby, only to find that she too is now a victim of evil and in need of Ash’s help. Former enemies become reluctant allies as Elk Grove soon becomes the nucleus of evil.

Throughout the season Kelly (DeLorenzo), is taking her first steps to forging her own path, becoming a vicious fighter under some guidance from Ruby (Lucy Lawless). By the start of Season 3, we will find that Kelly is on a more proactive path than her friends. But will that be a good thing or a bad thing?

RAY SANTIAGO INTERVIEW: “Expect the Unexpected” From Pablo in Season 3 of Ash vs Evil Dead

From ihorror.com:

When we phoned Ray Santiago early Tuesday afternoon, he’d just finished a run, which isn’t necessarily a surprise for those who remember a chiseled Pablo from last season of Ash vs Evil Dead.

Forgive me if I’m a little out of breath,” Santiago said. “Ya know, us sidekicks have to keep our physique in check ‘cause Ash certainly cannot run down the block, so I have to do it for him.”

By the time our conversation had come to an end, however, we were the ones in need of oxygen.

A Q&A with b-movie bestseller Bruce Campbell

“I never set out to become a B movie actor, but fake blood doesn’t wash off so easily.”

So says Bruce Campbell, longstanding acting/producing legend of genre films and TV. He first came to attention as star of the original “Evil Dead,” which was a bargain-basement DIY project with childhood friend Sam Raimi. Campbell developed a reputation for quality across a rich history of quirky acting opportunities — so when Raimi was tapped to direct big-studio “Spiderman” movies, Campbell naturally had to get a bit part. Adoring geeks pointed him out, saying: “Do you know who that is?”

And the legend grew.

Campbell soaked up the attention, and gave back generously. He wasn’t aiming at being the loudest wit dominating his projects; instead, his general persona centered between a charismatic everyman and a tell-it-like-it-is smartass. He was a natural fit for guest-star appearances as conventions for science fiction, horror and comics exploded into their own industry.

If you couldn’t get enough Bruce Campbell on-screen, or at your local comic-con, he landed on bestseller lists with his memoir ”If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor.” He has since extrapolated on some autobiographical tall tales to make a novel: “Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way.” But now it’s time again to set down real-life adventures, and so we have “Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor.”

Bruce Campbell Promotes Book With Evil Dead-Inspired Videos

Bruce Campbell is drawing upon his Evil Dead roots in a pair of videos to help promote his new book Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B-Movie Actor. With more than 100 credits in film and television over the past 36 years, Campbell was first introduced to movie fans as Ashley J. “Ash” Williams in the 1981 horror film classic The Evil Dead, directed and produced, respectively, by his longtime friends Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.

Spawning the sequels Evil Dead II in 1997 and  Army of Darkness in 1994, the films and Ash – a chainsaw-hand-wielding anti-hero –  gained an enormous cult following over the next three decades, leaving fans begging for a follow-up that was finally realized with the Ash vs. Evil Dead series on STARZ in 2015.

A-List: Bruce Campbell’s new book charts the second phase of his career

Actor, director and writer Bruce Campbell has crafted a career out of a certain kind of off-beat character. As an actor, he doesn’t disappear into a role, but rather imbues each with an almost ludicrous uniqueness, a deeply specific sense of self. This kind of interplay between the fantasy and reality of his existence is a perfect precursor to his alternate career as a memoirist.
