Chin Up: Q&A with Bruce Campbell

Josh Hadley writes:

Do I even need to explain who Bruce Campbell is? Bruce Campbell is the Michigan native who everyone my age grew up watching in movies the likes of the Evil Dead trilogy (“Evil Dead," “Evil Dead II" and “Army of Darkness") and so many other amazing cult films such as “Moontrap," “Mindwarp" and “Maniac Cop." He would also pop up for small roles in big-budget movies now and then as when he was killed in the opening minutes of “Congo" or under heavy makeup in “Escape From L.A." Campbell's biggest mainstream impact is in the USA network series “Burn Notice" as the always awesome Sam Axe.

Short version: You have seen Bruce in things — even if you didn't notice him at the time, you saw him. Now you can see him in person when he visits Wisconsin's Pabst Theatre on Sept 28 for a screening of “Evil Dead II."

I was honored to sit down and chat with the man about the Evil Dead franchise, his creative work with television and his filming the movie “Mindwarp" in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

EVIL DEAD In Concert With Original Composer Joe LoDuca!

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra have just announced that on October 31st, they’ll be performing a One Night Only concert event of EVIL DEAD with original score composer Joe LoDuca.

Sam Raimi’s legendary genre classic will be screened in a newly-restored format at the Palais Theatre, with a reinvented score brought to life by musicians from the MSO alongside the renowned composer himself on keyboards!

More than 35 years ago, a low-budget horror movie roared across movie screens and changed the velocity of fear forever — and made a cult legend out of Bruce Campbell in his iconic role as the lethal, wisecracking Ash Williams.

EVIL DEAD follows five college students on holiday in an isolated cabin in the woods, where they unwittingly release absolute evil into the world and are forced to fight to survive.

LoDuca’s spine-tingling score – newly reimagined for this show – will be played live by an ensemble of musicians from the MSO, conducted by Brett Kelly. This rare resurrection of the beloved cult classic will come to life in a way you’ve never seen before – in this lifetime… or the next!

Tickets are on sale now!

Bruce Campbell on hosting ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’ and burying Ash Williams

Interview Excerpt:

GN: This is the beginning of a new chapter for you as a host. It’s been just over a year since you closed the book on Ash vs. Evil Dead. You retired the character after that. Are you ever going to be able to fully let go of Ash Williams?

BC: Well, I can let go of it. It’s other people who don’t want to let go of it. They’ll never be satisfied. We do three seasons on Starz. They gave us a great opportunity to do unrated television. If we did a movie it would be rated R, but fans got 30 hours of uncut new material. If this was features, that would have taken place over 10 years, but with TV you can fart it out. As far as page count, you couldn’t have done any better for fans. But God forbid, they go: “If we just had that fourth season,” and if you did a fourth season, “If we just had the fifth season you could have wrapped up the story.” They’re always going to want more.

Bruce Campbell on Ripley’s Believe It or Not, working with Sam Raimi, and the end of Ash vs. Evil Dead – Fan Expo 2019 Interview

Excerpt:

Fans had spent years clamouring for another Evil Dead film, but the TV series served as the best option for Campbell, Raimi and others since a fourth Evil Dead film may not have been financially profitable. Now that the series has ended, Campbell looks back on it with a sense of closure he and the fandom can share. “I’m fine with it because we finally got to do it. I got to address it to my maximum abilities and I felt we did that. I felt we honoured the fans too because we gave them a pseudo-ending,”

Grindhouse Releasing Brings “Evil Dead” To Theaters In 4K With Exclusive New 5.1 Surround Soundtrack

Original Composer Joe LoDuca Revisits Sam Raimi’s Horror Classic

For Immediate Release

Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Sam Raimi’s EVIL DEAD to theaters for the first time in 4K with a terrifying new soundtrack!

This special edition of EVIL DEAD presents the horror classic for the first time with a reimagined score by original composer Joseph LoDuca and a thrilling new 5.1 surround mix created by Marti Humphrey and Jussi Tegelman, the award-winning sound crew behind DRAG ME TO HELL and ASH VS. EVIL DEAD.

Star BRUCE CAMPBELL explains, “Mixing the sound for EVIL DEAD in the early 80’s, we were forced to shove everything into one monaural box. As a result, Joe LoDuca’s great score had to compete unfairly with Kandarian Demons, gore sound effects and lots of screaming. With this new release, Joe can finally have his dynamic composition mixed, balanced and featured properly – for perhaps the first time ever!”

Grindhouse Releasing owner Bob Murawski worked with Raimi to restore EVIL DEAD from the original 16mm camera negatives, and brought the stunning 4K transfer together with LoDuca’s new soundtrack. Murawski is an Oscar-winning film editor whose work with Sam Raimi includes DARKMAN, ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE GIFT, SPIDER MAN 1, 2, & 3, DRAG ME TO HELL, and ASH VS. EVIL DEAD.

“With this fantastic new score, Joe LoDuca proves that he’s the Bartok of blood, the Shostakovich of shock, the Mahler of the macabre.” Murawski said. ”The new music, new sound mix and new 4K restoration have elevated EVIL DEAD from the scary to the sublime.”

The new theatrical EVIL DEAD experience will premiere September 14 at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin as part of MondoCon. This will be the first time EVIL DEAD is shown with the new score, which Mondo released on vinyl to great acclaim last year.

“What we have here is one of the BEST horror films ever made with a brand new soundtrack that is more dynamic, more terrifying and more in line with Joe and Sam’s original vision of how the movie was meant to sound,” writes Mondo record label manager Spencer Hickman. “We are thrilled to be bringing you the world premiere of this brand new Evil Dead experience This is going to knock you sideways!”

Following the world premiere in Austin, the special presentation will travel to BeyondFest in Los Angeles and select theaters nationwide this fall.

Joe LoDuca will perform selections from his score live with his ensemble at MondoCon and BeyondFest events.

For bookings, contact theatrical sales director David Szulkin at info@grindhousereleasing.com.

VHS Revival takes to the backwoods with Sam Raimi’s quintessential ‘video nasty’

There is something distinctly and authentically evil about The Evil Dead that most ‘video nasties’, and indeed horror movies in general, fail to achieve. This is largely thanks to the film’s then upstart director Sam Raimi, who on a meagre budget put the majority of low-budget directors to shame. It was clear from the beginning that this wasn’t just another hack looking to cash-in on the burgeoning VHS market. This was a filmmaker of prodigious talent.

Born in Pontiac and raised in Farmington Twsp, Danny began his film career as Jake, in the B-Movie Horror classic, Evil Dead 2 starring Bruce Campbell. Hicks would go on to co-star in films with Campbell, including Darkman, Spiderman 2, & My Name Is Bruce. Hicks also touches on his early stage career along with his musical endeavors as well. Interview With Special FX Artist HANK CARLSON

Interview Excerpt:

A: What have been the proudest moments of your career?

HC: I actually have three:
  • The first is working on ARMY OF DARKNESS. Sam Raimi, who loved to abuse his friend Bruce Campbell, wrote an effect into the script where the Deadites first awaken in an old cemetery after Ash speaks the wrong words removing the book of the dead from the alter. The effect was that a skeleton arm shoots out of the ground and into Ash’s open mouth going down his throat. No one could figure out how to make this practical effect work. We had many group meetings discussing ways to develop the effect. I had an idea and told Howard Berger. He liked the idea and told me to make a prototype that I could show Sam Raimi at an upcoming meeting. So I did – and Sam loved it. I got to make the arm and work directly with Bruce and Sam on how the effect worked and how to film it. The effect worked great and will forever live on in cinematic history.

'Evil Dead: The Musical' returns to Detroit this fall

We're going to need more blood!

The campy cult horror classic Evil Dead is, after nearly four decades, revered as a hallmark of the horror genre — and also perhaps one of the most unlikely candidates for a musical adaptation.

Returning for its annual fall-time six-week engagement starting Sept. 26 is Evil Dead: The Musical, which will, once again, get hella gory at Detroit's City Theatre — this time with familiar faces (David Schoen as Jake and Garett Michael Harris as Ash) and some new blood.

[Trailer] ‘Within the Woods’ is a Pitch-Perfect Fan Tribute to ‘The Evil Dead’

Before they made The Evil Dead, Sam Raimi and friends first put together a concept pitch that was titled Within the Woods, and the rest is movie history. The 1978 short, starring Bruce Campbell, is what allowed Raimi to make the 1981 feature, and fan Eric Yoder has now come along all these years later to make his own tribute to The Evil Dead, titled…Within the Woods!

Written and directed by Yoder, Within the Woods is an upcoming fan film tribute to Raimi’s classic horror film, and to say the very least, Yoder absolutely *nailed* the aesthetics.

Lights, camera, action in Birmingham

Birmingham Museum staffer and movie buff Kyle Phillips will present a free lecture on how Birmingham and its surroundings have figured into numerous feature films, short films and commercials in the last of a series of free museum lectures on Thursday, August 8, at 7 p.m. at Baldwin Public Library.

“I’ve always been interested in movies,” said Phillips. “When I first started working at the Birmingham Museum, there was an exhibit display for the ‘People of Birmingham’ bicentennial exhibit on actors Tim Allen and Bruce Campbell, and director Sam Raimi, who were all from this area. I was surprised by this and became very curious about other aspects of Birmingham’s connection to films and film making.”

When the opportunity to give a presentation on the topic came up, Phillips jumped at the chance to learn more and present a lighthearted lecture on Birmingham's contribution to writing, acting and producing film.
