Lucy Lawless Joined ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ For the Laughs, Not the Action

Although she admits she’s never exactly been one to crave physical roles, Lucy Lawless is definitely back in action.

Long after her iconic stint as the titular “Xena: Warrior Princess,” Hollywood still wants to see the actress as an action heroine. “The industry thinks of my persona as being six foot tall and full of grit and muscles, and, in fact, I’m a lady who doesn’t like sports at all and really doesn’t care,” she chuckled. “But my fans seem to be very forgiving if I go off in other directions, which I have. I ain’t complaining; put it that way.”

But she’s about to take on a new self-described “badass bitch” role as Ruby on “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” Starz’s upcoming television sequel to the enduring horror-comedy film franchise created by Sam Raimi and Lawless’ producer husband Rob Tapert (also the creative team behind “Xena”). Along with the familial connections, Lawless says the job was tremendously appealing because longtime “Evil Dead” star and old pal Bruce Campbell “wanted me around because I laugh at his jokes.”

‘Strike Back’ Director Michael J. Bassett on the Show’s Final Season, ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’

Interview Excerpt:

How was it to go off and direct two episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead?

BASSETT: I had an absolutely blast doing it. It was another one of those moments of living out a childhood fantasy, working with Sam Raimi, directing Bruce Campbell, the coolest guy on the planet, and having the opportunity to kill lots of deadites with chainsaws and shotguns. I think it’s going to be an enormously fun show. It’s going to be absolutely great.

Waxwork Announces ‘Evil Dead 2′ Vinyl: Needs Your Help For Design

Waxwork Records has announced that they will be releasing Joseph LoDuca‘s score to the 1987 horror comedy Evil Dead II on limited edition vinyl. As someone who owns several Waxwork titles, I can tell you that this is incredible news and makes me extremely excited for the final product!

However, there’s a very cool twist to this release. Rather than go with the popular vinyl artists that are being used by nearly everyone these days, they want the fans of the film to have a say in the package design!

The Evil Dead, The Cabin in the Woods... All The Horror Films in the "Until Dawn" Game

Ronnie Gonzalez writes:

The highly anticipated survival horror game, "Until Dawn", was released earlier this week for the Playstation 4. For those of you who don't know about the game, the plot centers around a group of eight teenagers who head to a cabin located on a so thought isolated mountain. Soon enough, their plan of having a fun weekend getaway turns into a bloody fight for survival when a killer begins to hunt them down one by one, and YOU as they player gets to decide the fate of the characters.

The game plays like a clichéd horror film, that borrows many elements from the genre and incorporates them into "Until Dawn", while introducing new ones. On my play through of the game I happened to notice that there were many scenes/moments that made me reminisce about past iconic horror movies. So here is a list of what I encountered.

For those readers, yet to have played the game, be advised this list may contain SPOILERS

Bruce Campbell Wizard World Exclusive: Bruce Campbell

Interview Excerpt:

JE: With season one of Ash on the way, what is the likelihood of there will be a season 2?

BC: When you get started on a show, you should have at least 5 years of material. Whether we’ll be on that long, I don’t know. That’s for the fans and ratings to decide. But the funny thing is that people just have never shut up about Evil Dead. No matter what other things I worked on, people would always come up to me and say, “That’s nice. So when are we getting some MORE Evil Dead?” Now you’re getting more Evil Dead and everyone is still asking the same question. You people are insatiable!

Bruce Campbell Talks Last Fan Standing & Ash vs. Evil Dead!

We had the chance to catch up with Bruce Campbell at Wizard World Chicago where he announced his Kickstarter campaign for season two of Last Fan Standing!

Bruce Campbell launches Kickstarter campaign for Last Fan Standing game show

Bruce Campbell is set to return to TV screens this fall as the star of Ash vs Evil Dead. But EW can exclusively reveal that Campbell is also set to bring back another of his fan-favorite events with a second season of the convention-set game show he hosts, Last Fan Standing. And he’ll be doing it by launching a Kickstarter campaign to help fund it.

Last Fan Standing is a trivia tournament that is played by fans at Wizard World conventions. (The first season aired online at CONtv.) “It’s a trivia game just for fans where they can walk in right off the floor,” Campbell tells EW. “They get a clicker, we hit them with a preliminary round, and we take the four best people in that room. Nobody has any special skills. They get up there in whatever shlubby outfit or costume they’re wearing. We tried it in two different cities where we shot the first 10 episodes. Now we’re going to the masses. I’ve never done this before. I’ve never crowd-funded, so it’s a little nerve-wracking because you’re like, ‘Jeez, is anyone gonna give a rat’s ass about this?’”

What does Campbell need the money for in putting together season 2? “What we mostly want to do is just upgrade everything a little bit so it looks a little more like an official game show,” says the host. “We want to go to different cities to do this because it would be great to have regionals and quarterfinals and semifinals — the whole bit. So basically you could have the king or queen nerd of the United States. And the world! It could keep going. It’s just tailored for fans. It’s all sci-fi, horror, fantasy gameplay.”

“Ash vs Evil Dead”: Why Doesn’t Ash Work At S-Mart?

One of the first ever images from “Ash vs Evil Dead,” the upcoming Starz series based on Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise, revealed Bruce Campbell as Ash, alongside Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana Delorenzo).

What was weird about the image was that it was pegged as a look at Ash with his two fellow Value Stop employees.

“Value Stop? What about S-Mart?” we collectively asked.

S-Mart was one of the most memorable locations in the Evil Dead franchise as it was the starting and ending point to Army of Darkness, where Ash gets his trusty “boomstick” and other handy tools.

During an interview we had with Raimi back in July, he explains the name change to Bloody Disgusting.

Necronomic-on demand: Australia gets 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' world premiere

Australian streaming service Stan will be the first platform in the world to premiere the highly-anticipated TV series "Ash vs. Evil Dead" this Halloween. And just as we hoped, it looks real ugly...

Horror fans down under will be the first to get a fist full of boomstick when "Ash vs. Evil Dead" hits screens this Halloween, with the TV show premiering on Australian streaming service Stan hours before anywhere else in the world.

After the original "Evil Dead" trilogy lit up screens in the '80s and early '90s with a bloodbath of deadites, possessed girlfriends and Sam Raimi snap-zooming, the popular franchise is back, this time on the small screen.

US network Starz first announced the 10-episode series as a network original in November 2014, confirming original director Sam Raimi and producer Robert Tapert were on board for the project.

Cult hero and author of "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor," Bruce Campbell will also reprise his lead role as Ash Williams, the unwitting exorcist and occasional time traveller charged with ridding the world of evil.

While anticipation has been building ahead of the launch, Australian streaming service Stan confirmed on Wednesday that it would be the first network in the world to air "Ash vs. Evil Dead" on October 31, the only on-demand platform in Australia to snag the series. The premiere episode will be available hours later on Starz in time for Halloween in the US.

Dead Leaves – New novella chronicles the search for The Evil Dead

Andrew David Barker is following up his excellent film related novel, The Electric, with a new novella called Dead Leaves.

1983 – Derby, England: Set amidst the furore and media firestorm surrounding the so-called ‘video nasties’, DEAD LEAVES is a coming-of-age novella about a group of horror fans and their search for vilified VHS ‘The Evil Dead’. Darkly funny and brutally honest in its depiction of aimless life in a midland town, Andrew David Barker’s latest work perfectly captures those turbulent first few years of video and the impact it had on a generation.

The Electric was a superb read, so I will be looking forward to this one. Especially as I remember trying to track down various video nasties back in the day.

Published by BooBooks, Dead Leaves is due out this October.

Peter Feeney making waves with his latest show

Everything Peter Feeney does is in a rush, he says so himself.

It's probably why he's so direct. While most would idle with small talk, 10 seconds into meeting him, he's offering an in-depth analysis of the state of the acting industry for New Zealand thespians. If anyone would know, it's him: he's been an actor, director, writer, journalist and acting tutor for more than 20 years. He's worked on everything from Shortland Street and the early days of Xena, to Black Sheep, 30 Days of Night, Spartacus and more recently, Ash vs Evil Dead.

He's just finished work on the Evil Dead revival Ash vs Evil Dead currently being made here in New Zealand, and when the topic comes up, he excitedly pulls out his phone to share pictures.

His 8-year-old son Arlo is on set as we speak, playing one of the infamous deadites – the bad guys of the franchise. "I had such good fun out there, I can't even tell you," he says, scrolling through photos and shaking his head with a nostalgic, "good times, mate. I'll tell ya".

Mondo Dropping 'Army of Darkness' OST Vinyl at MondoCon

Deadites, Necronomicon readers and film score fans all have something to look forward to at Austin's MondoCon this year, with movie music house Mondo having confirmed that the event will celebrate the score to Army of Darkness with a limited edition vinyl release.

A blog post from the imprint confirms that they're making Joseph LoDuca and Danny Elfman's score to the '90s horror-comedy a big part of the 2015's MondoCon, which runs October 3 and 4. They'll be delivering pressings of the soundtrack on "Baby Blue & Black Vortex Swirl"-coloured vinyl, as well as on traditional black wax.

The score was mostly handled by LoDuca, though the "March Of The Dead Theme" was composed by Elfman (Batman, Beetlejuice). It was performed by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. We'll have to wait until the vinyl arrives, but hopefully the new vinyl edition has mastered the tracks to make them about as loud as film protagonist Ash's beloved boom stick.

The artwork, meanwhile, had previously been used for an exclsuive Mondo poster in 2014. You can see the re-purposed piece, which was prepped by artist Richey Beckett, up above.
