The Evil Dead – Possessing Souls 35 Years Later

“I know now that my wife has become host to a Kandarian demon. I fear that the only way to stop those possessed by the spirits of the book is through the act of… bodily dismemberment…” speaks a recording, setting the tone for a long and eerie night for a few young adults on spring break. The torturous events they encounter thereafter opens up a world of darkness and pure evil in the low budget 1981 Horror flick known famously to all as The Evil Dead.

In a cabin in the woods of the Tennessee mountains, Ash, (Bruce Campbell: Army of Darkness 1992, Ash vs Evil Dead TV series) his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker: 2084 2009, Lake Eerie 2016), Ash’s sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss: Satan’s Playground 2006, Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series), their friend Scotty (Richard DeManincor: Crimewave 1985, Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series), and Scott’s girlfriend Shelly (Sarah York: Oz the Great and Powerful 2013, Dangerous Women TV series) celebrate their spring break when they come across an old reel to reel player in a cellar. Curious, they play it (American Movie Classics host Bob Dorian was the voice), and it tells of the finding of the Book of the Dead. Suddenly, the tape fast forwards, and stops on incantations. Can the group figure out how to stop the spirits set free before they are all possessed, or are they doomed to be one of the damned?

Friends from high school, Director Sam Raimi and first time Lead Actor Campbell set out to make their first movie in their college years, which would eventually hold the title The Evil Dead, an iconic movie of the Horror industry recognized today. With its mix of Dark Comedy and extreme gore, The Evil Dead became a must-see. Initially premiering in a small amount of theaters on October 15, 1981, word of mouth spread rapidly and The Evil Dead took off like a demon possessed. One of a kind and so over the top, it has since become a legendary favorite still celebrated 35 years later.

Bruce Campbell Sparks Hope For An 'Evil Dead' Crossover

Through a crossover event, fans would get the best of both Evil Dead worlds in one place. Where Ash brings in the laughs and one-liners that have become the stuff of pop culture legend, Mia brings the horror that defined both the very first Evil Dead movie and the remake. This would not only be a fan's dream come true, but it would also allow a unified Evil Dead story to venture into new places instead of splitting ideas between two distinct versions of the same narrative, or sticking to one formula.

EW: Bruce Campbell teases Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3: 'We're going to do some crazy sh--'

The second season finale of Ash vs Evil Dead screened last night, but star Bruce Campbell says that work has already begun on season 3 of Starz’s horror-comedy show.

“The writers are working right now,” the actor told EW last week. “All the monkeys are in the room!”

So, what can Campbell say about season 3?

“I can’t say much because we’re going to try and do some crazy sh–,” he explains. “But we’re probably going to crack more into Ash’s big picture story. He is foretold in an ancient book. He’s not just some guy in a crappy trailer home. There is a myth to Ash, there is a story, and so we want to explore a little more of that Joseph Campbell, big picture story. Why him? Why that guy? Why is he chosen to save the world?”

Bruce Campbell Says “Ash vs Evil Dead” and ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Could Still Cross Over

Ash and Mia would make a pretty badass duo, don’t you think?

If you’re a fan of the Evil Dead franchise, you’ve pretty much gotten everything you ever could’ve wanted at this point. Fede Alvarez gave us a badass, extremely gory remake of the original classic back in 2013, and those who were waiting for Evil Dead 4 are getting precisely that courtesy of the Starz sequel series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” What a wonderful time to be alive, isn’t it?!

Ash vs Evil Dead Season Two Did Everything a Kick-Ass Sequel Should Do

The first season of Ash vs Evil Dead was nonstop insane mayhem, continuing a story that began 35 years ago in the most rewarding way possible. How could the second season possibly top that? Sam Raimi had the answer: raise the stakes, allow certain characters to evolve, and make everything at least 10 times gorier.

Interview: Ted Raimi Discusses Playing a Possessed Henrietta Once Again on ASH VS EVIL DEAD Season 2

From dailydead.com:

As Ash's best friend Chet Kaminski, Ted Raimi turned in a scene-stealing performance with equal amounts of humor and heart on the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, but the actor also had the epic opportunity to reprise his role as a possessed Henrietta from Evil Dead 2. With the second season coming to an end, we caught up with Ted to talk about playing both roles on the series, filming the cabin cellar rematch between Henrietta and Ash, and his upcoming feature film directorial debut. [Spoiler warning for those who haven't watched the first nine episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2.]

ASH VS. EVIL DEAD’s Ashy Slashy Puppet Will Get an Official Release Next Year!

From nerdist.com:

Tonight, the second season finale of Ash vs. Evil Dead will arrive on Starz, and it will bring TV’s bloodiest comedy to a temporary conclusion. There’s already a third season in the works for next year, and that’s not the only good news: NECA is going to release an Ashy Slashy puppet in 2017!

The news was announced on NECA’s official twitter account in the following post:

Within the world of the show, “Ashy Slashy” is the unfortunate nickname given to Bruce Campbell‘s Ash after the events of the first two Evil Dead movies. The Ashy Slashy puppet made its debut this year in an episode in which Ash was seemingly made to believe that the past three decades of his life had been a delusion. Campbell’s interactions with the puppet were also some of the funniest moments this season, but we particularly loved Kelly’s wild fight with Ashy Slashy in the eighth episode.  This series is so delightfully insane that we wouldn’t be too shocked if Ashy Slashy shows up next season as well.

EW: Bruce Campbell previews Ash vs Evil Dead season finale: 'It's gonna be pretty big!'

So, what can we expect from this Sunday’s season finale of the Starz horror-comedy?

“It’s the final showdown of Ash and this one particular guy, Baal,” says Campbell. “That’s it! Last episode of the season! Stuff’s gotta happen! So, it’s gonna be pretty big! I would say to people, also, Ash and the team will do anything to bring Pablo back. Anything!”

EW: Bruce Campbell deals with a Deadite in exclusive Ash vs Evil Dead season finale clip

There’s no rest for the wicked in Ash vs Evil Dead — nor, it seems, for booze-guzzling blowhards. Both assertions are proven once again by a clip from this Sunday’s season 2 finale of the Starz horror-comedy, as Bruce Campbell’s titular sort-of hero (and, now, time traveler!) takes on Deadite Henrietta (Ted Raimi) in the basement of the Evil Dead franchise’s infamous cabin in the woods.

Only one episode remains for Season 2 of the “unrestricted carnage and mayhem” that is Starz Channel’s “Ash vs Evil Dead,” but iHorror was able to chat with Bruce Campbell late Friday morning, two full days before the big unveiling on Sunday night.

And Campbell did not disappoint.

Ted Raimi talks ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ & Season 2’s ‘insanely bloody’ finale

Interview Excerpt:

What you are going to see in the season finale are some insanely bloody, gut-wrenching, gut-pulling, blood-spewing fights between Bruce Campbell and myself. I think the fans are really going to dig it. And there are some things in there that are so insanely disgusting, I can’t even repeat them here.

The Long History of Wes Craven and Sam Raimi’s Communication Through Film

All these years later, the fun continues in “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”

It all started back in 1977. In The Hills Have Eyes, a torn Jaws poster was seen in the Carter family’s camper, and many took it as Wes Craven essentially saying that his movie was much scarier than anything on display in Spielberg’s hit money-maker. Whether or not that was actually Craven’s intention is up for debate – and looking back, I’m not even sure that actually was a Jaws poster – but all that really matters here is the way Sam Raimi interpreted the homage. And when it came time to make his own movie a few years later, he took a page out of Craven’s playbook.

Tonight’s “Ash vs Evil Dead” Did More Than Return to the ‘Evil Dead’ Cabin!

From bloody-disgusting.com:

A spoiler warning for those who have yet to watch the episode, because this story is extra groovy.

Forget Evil Dead 4, this is even better. The second season of Starz’s “Ash vs Evil Dead” just rewarded us for all of our patience and has turned into a full blown prequel to Sam Raimi’s 1981 The Evil Dead and 1987’s Evil Dead II. Yes, the way you watch those movies will be forever changed after viewing tonight’s episode of “Ash vs Evil Dead”, which sets the stage for next Sunday’s season finale.

The promotional trailer for tonight episode, “Home Again”, revealed that Ash would be time traveling to stop himself from reading from the Necronomicon, but I was not expecting what would come next – and it’s the most fulfilling Evil Dead related story since Army of Darkness in 1992. Speaking of…

Before “Ash vs Evil Dead” turns into a prequel to The Evil Dead, there’s a delicious reference to Army of Darkness, which brings the series full circle and cements it in-canon. The references continue as this episode starts off as a heavy-handed homage to the slapstick comedy sequel, which isn’t allowed to be directly referenced (because of rights issues). What happens is that Ash again becomes possessed by a Deadite. Here, he teases the audience by threatening to lop off his leg (holy shit), but instead sucks out the demon venom, like with a snake bite. The madness continues when he realizes there’s a little demon brewing inside him, like in the insane Army of Darkness sequence with tiny Ashs playing a game of “Gulliver’s Travels” with the chainsaw-handed antihero. The nods continue as Ash swallows a tin of cinnamon, ingests a vile of hot sauce, and then helps it down with a heaping gulp of hot water. Out pops a demon that he smashes with a pan, but not before it can tell Ash to go fuck himself.

Here’s an exclusive online look!
