Ash vs. Evil Dead star Ray Santiago built a career by defying racist stereotypes

When Ray Santiago was a teenager, an acting coach gave him one of those out-of-the-blue, kinda-sorta compliments that doesn't so much warm the heart as freeze the brain.

"He said, 'You could play Ben Stiller's half-Latino son, if there was a movie for that,'" Santiago recalls, laughing. "And, I was like, 'Wait, what?!'"

What was likely a stray observation — Santiago, like Stiller, does have some prominent eyebrows — soon became the most unlikely and laser-specific prophecy of all time. A year or so later, Santiago found himself in Los Angeles, cast as Ben Stiller's illegitimate, half-Latino son in Meet the Fockers.

The Filmmaking Genius of ‘Evil Dead II’s Gory Slapstick

Comedy and horror are the peanut butter and chocolate of genres.

Tongue-in-cheek, parody, camp, and slapstick all have homes in subgenres of horror. Evil Dead II is one of the most successful examples of the latter. The Sam Raimi sequel embraces all that connects the most body-based genres, using a cinephile’s smorgasbord of filmmaking techniques to draw lines between wacky and spooky wherever he can.

Walker Stalker Atlanta: 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Panel Recap

Excerpt:

Raimi: “All of us get to do things that people on most shows that dread and we love it. We get shot with blood and we’re hanging from harnesses and fighting monsters. It’s its own weird thing.”

Raimi was then asked if he felt nostalgic going back to the world of Evil Dead.

“Not at first, but they recreated the basement from the cabin. I was there wearing my costume and Bruce Campbell was wearing his costume, and that’s when I realized I’ve gone nowhere with my life. (Laughs)”

EW: Alejandro Jodorowsky thinks Evil Dead 2 is the perfect Halloween movie

Alejandro Jodorowsky is not known as a horror director, per se. But the director of such cult classics as El Topo, The Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre, and this year’s Endless Poetry routinely includes in his movies the kind of eye-popping weirdness and viscerality that few terror tale-crafters would dare to match. So, what films does the Chile-born ‘Jodo’ recommend EW readers watch this Halloween? The answer is birthday boy Sam Raimi’s 1987 horror-comedy Evil Dead 2 and James Whale’s 1931 horror classic, Frankenstein.

The Coen Brothers Raise The Evil Dead

30 years after the release of Raising Arizona, a look at the use of "shaky cam."

Friends can be influential on a personal level, but what about in an artistic sense? Sam Raimi and the Coen Brothers are known for very different films, but once upon a time they were collaborators. While Joel and Ethan Coen are multiple Oscar-winners and critically lauded auteurs, they struggled to break into filmmaking just like the horror-obsessed Raimi. Joel and Sam worked together on Raimi’s no-budget masterwork The Evil Dead, and it was there that Joel learned a cheap but effective camera trick to raise the pulse of the audience: the shaky cam.

The Genius of Sam Raimi

His movies make laughs and scares the same thing.

This video explains the giddy rush you feel when director Sam Raimi whips up his unique blend of horror and comedy. According to video essayist Patrick Willems, his genius lies in throwing us off balance as we’re yanked between two genres that affect us on a primal level.

There’s a straight line—or is that a flatline?—from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein to Evil Dead’s Ash, and several distinct ways to push audiences to the edge of hysteria. As Willems points out, there's nothing inherently funny in Raimi’s movies, and that's where he gets us.

Lee Majors to return for Season 3 of 'Ash vs. Evil Dead'

Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Bruce Campbell says Lee Majors is returning for Season 3 of Ash vs. Evil Dead -- even though his character was run down by a demonic car in Season 2.

"We brought him back. So, we have some good scenes with him as a ghost," Campbell told UPI recently at New York Comic Con. "He's funny. Lee is funny. Lee has a good sense of humor. This season, now, Lee is way more relaxed because he is like: 'I've got this. I know what this is now.' You come on to a new show, you don't know what the hell it is. You don't know any of these people. He is comfortable with me now and, so, he's great."

Season 3 is scheduled to begin Feb. 25 on Starz. The horror-comedy follows Campbell's Evil Dead movies, which were released in the 1980s and '90s. It co-stars Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo.

Majors is known for his roles on TV's The Big Valley, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Fall Guy. He joined Ash vs. Evil Dead as Ash's father Brock in Season 2.

Ash vs Evil Dead: Bruce Campbell Hints at Time Travel in Season 3, Talks Holdup on Season 4

Ash vs Evil Dead has been coming to New York Comic Con every year since before its season 1 premiere in 2015. And why shouldn’t it, baby? In the halls of comic book geekdom, Bruce Campbell’s glorious chin is held in the same regard as the faces on Mount Rushmore, and his alter-ego’s chainsaw is more revered than any cherry tree-destroying axe. Of course Ashley J. Williams doesn’t just use his blade to cut wood.

So it was an obvious delight when Campbell took the stage of the Hammerstein Ballroom in Midtown on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by his co-stars and fellow icons of the cult TV series, Dana DeLorenzo, Ray Santiago, and newcomers Arielle Carver-O’Neill and Lindsay Farris. Basking in that glow, Campbell cheerfully introduced the season 3 premiere episode four months before its Feb. 25, 2018 debut. He also gave some major hints about what to expect in the new year, such as potential time travel shenanigans and trips to the sperm bank.

NYCC: Ash vs. Evil Dead drops S3 premiere, promises family drama

Bruce Campbell has bills to pay, y'all. Campbell, the namesake behind Starz's hit Ash vs Evil Dead, opened the series' New York Comic-Con 2017 panel on Saturday by thanking fans for helping pay his kid's tutition.

The audience was treated to a sneak peek of Season 3 along with the entire first episode. The show is slated to return Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 9PM ET/PT on Starz.

Our take: Without giving too much away, the Season 3 premiere is hilariously gruesome. Lucy Lawless (Xena) returns as Ruby, the Demon Mother of Fire, and she isn't holding anything back. We also meet Ash's daughter Brandy in the premiere and her mom Candy Barr. In typical Deadite fashion, Ash and his newfound fam are thrown into mayhem as he shows his daughter what his life entails, taking high school drama to a whole new level.

Actress Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly) returns to Ash vs. Evil Dead with some killer instincts and a friend, Dalton, played by Lindsay Farris. Arielle Carver-O'Neill also joins Season 3 as Ash's daughter Brandy Barr. At the panel, Carver-O'Neill says the experience being a newcomer on the show is both "terrifying and awesome." On parenthood, Campbell says Ash is the "best and the worst" as a father." He did reveal Ash never lies to his daughter and is very protective.

During the fan Q&A, DeLorenzo spills to the audience she and costar Ray Santiago had to share a shower one time after a scene, calling it a "murder scene" with all the fake blood.

Ash vs. Evil Dead Season 3 Will Top the Deadite Colon Fight

Ash vs Evil Dead star Dana DeLorenzo says there’s a scene in the upcoming third season of the series that tops the fight between Ash (Bruce Campbell) and a cadaver’s Deadite colon from last year. The Evil Dead saga, of course, is the brainchild of director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and actor Bruce Campbell, whose independent filmmaking toils paid off in 1981 when they made The Evil Dead a horror cult classic.

While the first film in the series was strictly for scares, the trio took their love for Three Stooges-style slapstick and infused those sensibilities into their Evil concept with 1987’s Evil Dead II, giving that and the third Evil Dead film — 1992’s Army of Darkness a distinct combination of horror and comedy. Suddenly, the idea of excessive blood and gore turned into scenes of gut-busting laughter, and in the case of the film’s spinoff series, Ash vs. Evil Dead, other parts of the body have inspired some gross-out guffaws, too.

The high point (or low point, depending on your point-of-view) of gag-inducing humor came in last year’s second season of Ash vs. Evil Dead, when in the episode “The Morgue”, Ash got into a tussle with the Deadite colon belonging to a deceased man, which ended up pulling the wise-cracking antihero’s square-jawed mug up into the sphincter of a cadaver. And while there were plenty of scenes of blood, guts and gore to go around the rest of the season, “The Morgue” scene was arguably the most disgusting one featured in the show’s 10 episodes.

Apparently, though, an effort was made to top the Ash/Deadite colon scene in the upcoming Ash vs. Evil Dead season 3. DeLorenzo made the reveal during an Ash vs. Evil Dead Facebook Live session Friday, which featured the actor, who plays Ash’s butt-kicking sidekick Kelly, along with Campbell, Ray Santiago (Pablo) and Arielle Carver-O’Neill – who joins the series this year as Brandy, the daughter Ash didn’t know he had.

The reveal unfolded when a fan asked what the cast members did to keep the new episodes fresh, to which Santiago responded with the motivational idea of, “How can top what we did the episode before?”
