Next Week’s “Ash vs Evil Dead” Will Give Homage to ‘The Thing’!

One of the greatest scenes ever in a horror film is the “blood test” sequence in John Carpenter’s The Thing. The moment is set up when MacReady (Kurt Russell) administers blood tests to uncover who is infected by the Thing. Palmer (David Clennon) is unmasked as an imitation and transforms into a creature that kills Windows (Thomas G. Waites).

While we’re unsure what will happen in next week’s episode of “Ash vs Evil Dead”, one thing is for certain, they’re giving homage to The Thing.

'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Recap: 'DUI'

It's always interesting to see how a television show evolves when it comes to how it tells a story and for proof of that, look no further than Ash vs. Evil Dead. After all, last year, the show was inclined to go with a slow burn for its story arc. Dropping only little nuggets of plot points our way week in and week out before finally revealing everything and anything over the course of an epic three part season finale. But this season...not only has the show decided to go for broke when it comes to gore and gags, they're more than happy to unveil exactly what they are up against and it made 'DUI' one of the most fascinating episodes of this season to date.

Overall, this is hands down one of the most well paced and well constructed episodes of the show’s currently available 14. Of course, that statement has been made before. Ash is consistently able to top itself just when the chips seem down. That’s the mark of a great genre show. That’s the mark of what makes Ash great.

Why The Evil Dead is the ultimate Halloween horror movie

Director Eli Roth is currently at work on his remake of the 1974 vigilante thriller Death Wish. But the man who brought us the Cabin Fever and Hostel franchises remains a stalwart fan of the horror genre in which he made his filmmaking bones (an appropriate metaphor given he is the man who also brought us 2013’s cannibal movie Green Inferno).

So, what film does Roth regard as the ultimate Halloween watch? The answer is Sam Raimi’s 1981 horror classic, The Evil Dead.

“Usually, when I’m having a party, I put on the original Evil Dead,” says Roth. “Right from the opening shot, it never stops. It’s one of those movies that everybody loves. It’s always fun. It’s so visually spectacular. I don’t know if people would still be scared by it, the way I was, but if you think about Sam Raimi, that it was made by a 20-year-old kid, or a 21-year-old kid, in the woods with his friends, and they just spent all their money doing it, and they nearly froze to death — the camerawork that he did, putting a camera on his back, strapping it to a motorcycle, it’s so inventive. I think a lot of people have seen the remake but they haven’t seen the original. You can’t go wrong with it.”

‘Ash Vs Evil Dead’ Reunites Bruce Campbell With ‘Xena’ Alum Ted Raimi For A Memorably Boozy Episode

Ash vs Evil Dead treated its audience to one of television’s most sudden (and violent) endings in the final moments of “Last Call.” As shocking as it was, however, the second season’s third episode stands out for an entirely different — and far more positive — reason: the onscreen reunion of longtime friends and collaborators Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi. Ever since the latter’s older brother, Sam Raimi, directed both in 1981’s The Evil Dead, the pair has become virtually inseparable in front of and behind the camera. Hence why the showrunners’ decision to cast Ted as Ash’s longtime friend and lone Elk Grove supporter, Chet Kaminski, makes so much sense.

The much-loved Starz horror-comedy series Ash vs. Evil Dead is back for Season 2, with Ash (Bruce Campbell) returning to his hometown of Elk Grove, Michigan. Although things with Ruby (Lucy Lawless) are shaky, at best, the former enemies, along with Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) must form an uneasy alliance, if they’re going to survive the growing evil and save the world.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, actor Lee Majors (who plays Brock Williams, Ash’s surly father who is not at all please that his son is back in town) talked about how he got involved with the show, his chemistry with Bruce Campbell, the relationship between Ash and his father, their competitive streak, dealing with all of the blood and gore, and how much he’d love to return for next season. “Join Us” in Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of ‘The Evil Dead’!

From bloody-disgusting.com:

It really is a wonderful world we live in, isn’t it? Who would have thought that by 2016 we would have two movie sequels, several video games, a musical,* a remake and a television sequel (which is awesome and disgusting and just got renewed for a third season) to Sam Raimi’s masterpiece The Evil Dead? The original film saw a wide release in 1983, but its world premiere was at Detroit’s Redford Theater back on October 15, 1981. Since that makes today the film’s 35th anniversary, we invite you to join us in celebrating this beloved horror classic!

From Proof of Concept to Praise From King: How “Within the Woods” Gave The Evil Dead Creative and Financial Life

On October 15, 1981, director Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert and actor Bruce Campbell unveiled their passion project feature debut to an audience completely unprepared for what they were about to see. Three years earlier, the very same cast and crew set out to make “Within the Woods”a short film that would later sprout into a cult horror franchise—completely unprepared for what they were about to make. In both cases, the cause of all this disbelief was the bona fide horror classic The Evil Dead.

Here’s Exactly What to Expect From the Unrated ‘Evil Dead’ Remake

From bloody-disgusting.com:

The “Unrated Edition” of Evil Dead arrives on digital platforms October 25th. But what is it?

We broke the exclusive news yesterday about the upcoming release, and today we wanted to bring a bit more clarity to this whole thing. For starters, the “Unrated Edition” is the very same version of the film that has aired on television over in the UK, which you may have heard about at some point in the past three years. Director Fede Alvarez refers to this not as an unrated edition or a director’s cut, but rather an extended version; long story short, the “Unrated Edition” is the longest cut of the film, the one that was eventually edited by Alvarez into the version we’ve seen.

The Unrated ‘Evil Dead’ to Swallow Your Soul This Halloween! (Exclusive)

When Sam Raimi was preparing to release his remake of The Evil Dead in theaters back in 2013, we analyzed the living crap out of it. Not only did we find clues leading us to believe that the Fede Alvarez-directed Evil Dead was secretly in-canon with Raimi’s trilogy, but we learned of multiple deleted scenes and a different version of the film that had accidentally aired on television overseas.

Since then, Alvarez went on to direct the incredibly tense Don’t Breathe, which was a huge box office success this summer for both Sony and Ghost House. During his press rounds, Alvarez let the cat out of the bag on the extended cut of Evil Dead, timed with the home video release of Don’t Breathe. While we don’t have info on the latter, yet, Bloody Disgusting can exclusively reveal that Alvarez’s Evil Dead will be getting an “Unrated Edition” release on October 25th, just in time for Halloween.

Being released solely on digital platforms, we also have the exclusive artwork debut and can confirm the new Unrated Edition carries an additional 5-minutes of footage “that was too intense for theaters, allowing fans the perfect chance to see Fede Alvarez’s unedited vision for the film.” This will also be the first time that digital extras will be available on Evil Dead.

Jane Levy, who also starred in Don’t Breathe, took on Deadites in Evil Dead. The modern take followed five friends who head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

Ash Vs Evil Dead: 10 questions with Bruce Campbell

Ash Vs Evil Dead, in the midst of its second season, is continuing to provide Bruce Campbell with the opportunity to kick evil's ass and stop the demon threat that was unleashed some thirty-five years ago on the big screen in Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. As Ashley "Ash" Williams, he and his ragtag team find themselves immersed in weekly excursions into horror, massive amounts of blood and subversive humor as, in season two, they turn their attention to demonic cleanup in Ash's hometown.

Campbell is obviously having a great time, embracing the fact that no matter what else he does, Ash will remain his most identifiable role, so he's damn well going to make the most of it.

'Ash vs Evil Dead' Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: 'The Morgue'

Earlier this week, Starz announced it had renewed Ash vs Evil Dead for a third season that will debut in 2017. Given this, talk of this season’s ratings are mostly moot. However, it is worth noting the show is managing to hold on to its existing live + same day audience with a score of 436,000 viewers for the premiere. That’s only one thousand shy of last year’s series premiere.

More importantly, the hold comes days after Starz released the season two premiere online for free. And again, we still don’t have the big picture because this year Ash vs Evil Dead is available through OTT services like Amazon. It’s very possible the series is raking in well over 1 – 2 million viewers across all platforms. In the case of premium cable, a subscription is a subscription. Demographics don’t matter. So, if Ash is bringing in the digital market, it very much is bringing in some serious revenue to Starz, which is great for the longevity of the series.

Watch: Bruce Campbell and Lee Majors on surprise deaths, lots of blood in Ash vs Evil Dead

The new season of Ash vs. Evil Dead doubled the awesomeness quotient by casting Lee Majors as Ash’s father, so what does Majors think about joining this insane world filled with Deadites?

We caught up with Bruce Campbell and Lee Majors at New York Comic Con to discuss the second season, which kicked off earlier this month on Starz. Lee said he’s definitely been inducted into the horror world with a few buckets of blood, and the duo already seem to have some father-son chemistry going on. When it comes to spoilers, Campbell pulled out a big one (not really): Ash dies, and Lee Majors takes over the show (“It’s a new demographic,” Campbell jokes).

We also ask Majors about some of his quirkiest roles, and he reminiscences about battling Andre the Giant dressed as Bigfoot back in his Six Million Dollar Man days. We’ll just go ahead and warn you the end of that story takes a few … interesting twists.

Check out the interview below and let us know what you think:

Wait, is he serious? Bruce Campbell and Lee Majors talk all things Ash vs. Evil Dead Season 2.

Ash vs. Evil Dead's Lee Majors recalls working with Andre the Giant and answers a critically important question about Scrooge.

Bill Warren, R.I.P.

From www.newsfromme.com:

Author and film historian Bill Warren died this morning following a long, painful illness. He was 73 and he had been suffering from a ghastly array of infections that even a squadron of doctors had been unable to identify. I visited him in the nursing home several times and it just got worse and worse to the point where this past Sunday, he was unable to speak but he waved for me to leave him alone. I was not offended. I understood that he just didn't want visitors to see him like that.

Bill was born in North Bend, Oregon and grew up in Gardiner, Oregon. At an early age, he became fascinated by science-fiction and movies, particularly after seeing The Day the Earth Stood Still. He read avidly and contributed by mail to the legendary Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, which influenced a vast number of folks who became filmmakers, authors and artists. In 1966, he and his wife Beverly moved to Los Angeles where he worked as an assistant for a time to the magazine's editor, Forrest J Ackerman. I met Bill at Ackerman's famous home, The Ackermansion (the first one) sometime around late '66 or early '67. Bill was, by the way, no relation to that magazine's publisher, James Warren.

Bill wrote for the magazine and for countless publications about film, especially movies of a science-fiction or horror nature. At some point, he began compiling data for a wonderful book he would finally publish in 1982 called Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties. It's the best history of such films and it's been reprinted and updated several times since. The latest edition, which came out earlier this year, can be ordered here. (If the price seems steep, take a look at the page count and you'll understand.)

His other books include Set Visits: Interviews with 32 Horror and Science Fiction Filmmakers and The Evil Dead Companion. He wrote for hundreds of different publications, including several stints as a film critic and his contributions to Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide, plus scripts for Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella.

Starz Renews ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ For Third Season – NY Comic-Con

EXCLUSIVE: It looks like the world is going to get more Bruce Campbell as Starz has greenlighted a third season of Ash vs. Evil Dead. The 10-episode Season 3 is set to debut around next fall, I hear.

The news comes just five days after the second season of the series from EPs Campbell, Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Craig DiGregorio debuted on the cable net. It also comes one day after Ash vs. Evil Dead appeared at New York Comic-Con in the Hammerstein Ballroom. That panel featured the ever-loquacious Campbell, who plays Ash Williams in the series and the original Evil Dead movies, plus co-star Lucy Lawless. Fellow cast members Dana DeLorenzo, Ray Santiago, Ted Raimi and Lee Majors, who debuted as Ash’s father in S2 of the series.

On a very competitive Sunday, the Season 2 debut of Ash pulled in 733,000 viewers over all its airings that night. That’s a 14% uptick over the Season 1 premiere on the Saturday of October 31, 2015. Among adults 18-49, Ash was up an impressive 63% over the S1 opener.

Season 2 of the series found Ash leaving his beloved Jacksonville and returning to his hometown of Elk Grove. There, he confronts Ruby (Lawless), and the former enemies must form an uneasy alliance as the town becomes the nucleus of evil. “There are more nozzles, this year, on the blood-delivery stem,” Campbell quipped about S2 during the  Ash vs. Evil Dead TCA panel in August. “They can do a wider spread of blood.”

‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ Star Bruce Campbell Looks Back at First Film, Talks Season 2

Bruce Campbell reprises his most famous role in Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which begins its second season this month. He shares exec producer credit on the series with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who first collaborated on the 1983 film “The Evil Dead.” The trio started with a Super 8 short film, “Within the Woods,” which was designed to lure investors for a big-screen version. As Campbell recently told Variety, “We said, ‘Hey, if you like this, we can do it bigger, better, longer! And it’ll be in 16 millimeter!’ ” They made the film for $350,000, and the Feb. 9, 1983, review marked Campbell’s first mention in these pages. Though the review was mostly positive, the actor recently said, “Here is my favorite quote ever: ‘Dynamic sound is overbearing.’ We worked a lot on the sound, actually. We wanted it to be dynamic.”

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 NYCC Panel Recap

Moderator: Doug Benson

Panel: Bruce Campbell / Ray Santiago / Dana DeLorenzo / Michelle Hurd / Ted Raimi / Lucy Lawless / Lee Majors

The Ash vs. Evil Dead panel began with the crowd being given foam hand chainsaws, which were put to good use.

Benson started with Lee Majors, asking if he was an Ash or Evil Dead fan before this. His answer, “Nope.”

He continued with the story of seeing the first season, which he called a “Bat-shit crazy ride.” He was chased down on the lot by Campbell, and told him “I’d love to play your dad.”

Campbell gushed about getting an icon like Lee Majors (whom he described as being an ‘ass-grabbing ladies man’ in his heyday, born with hair on his body and known for his impressive man cleavage.

Bruce Campbell went on to describe where we’re at in season 2 – in the way that only Bruce Campbell can. He talked about Ted’s character, Ray, and how we shouldn’t cheer for him, as he’s a dude who leaves women’s drinks laced with “K” and never left his hometown.

“Only losers stay in Elk Grove?” Benson asked.

“Yup,” Campbell answered.

Campbell signaled out Ted, Raimi, who has appeared all over the Evil Dead franchise (as feet in the original; Possessed Henrietta in EV2; as several extras in Army of Darkness). Campbell used Ted as a jumping off point to tease fans about other faces from the franchise that will be making cameo appearances in AvsED seaon 2. “We know you want your ‘Holy Sh*t’ moments,” Campbell said, assuring fans that the show would deliver just that.

EW: Bruce Campbell hints that more Evil Dead characters are coming to Ash vs Evil Dead

One of the joys of Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead is all the little nods and Easter eggs to the original Evil Dead movies. But in terms of characters to make the leap from the big to the small screen, it’s just pretty much the titular Ash, as played by star Bruce Campbell. (Well, him and his trusty Delta Oldsmobile, that is.)

However, according to Campbell, that may be about to change.
