'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Season 1, Episode 5 Recap: 'The Host'

Last week, Ash vs. Evil Dead made the risky decision of not actually completing the episodic story it was telling. Interestingly enough, this was done the same weekend a new Netflix series, Jessica Jones, was released, thus re-starting the debate over television’s seemingly unfair move away from the idea of episodic story structure. Once Ash played this card, the big question became how the series was going to follow it up in this week’s “The Host.” Luckily for viewers, it turns out the program can indeed make this kind of move without issue because, once again, we’ve seen an episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead that completely stands up to scrutiny.

In addition to masterfully concluding the show’s first true two-part arc, “The Host” also turned out to be an episode that proved the relevancy of Bruce Campbell’s supporting players – particularly that of Dana DeLorenzo. Because the show has been so Ash focused (no thanks to its title), that man’s cohorts have been given little opportunity to truly shine. Of course, we get the occasional tidbit that adds to the characters of Pablo and Kelly, but for the most part they serve as aids to Ash. Really, the abandoning of this particular character structure is one of the main reasons why “The Host” is so enjoyable.
