Virgin Media Takes Starz's 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' for U.K.

The cable company says the exclusive deal "marks a step-change in our TV programming strategy and demonstrates the true potential for video on demand."

U.K. cable giant Virgin Media, part of John Malone's international cable operator Liberty Global, has struck an exclusive deal for Starz original series Ash vs. Evil Dead.

The deal will make Virgin the exclusive U.K. home of the show. Its TV customers will be able to watch it on demand starting Tuesday.

Financial details weren't disclosed. The first five episodes will be available to watch from Tuesday, followed by a new episode released each week. That will bring the series in line with the U.S. airdates.

The content deal is an early step in a content and video-on-demand push by Virgin.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is produced by Starz and already has been renewed for a second season. The adaptation of the Evil Dead movies reunites original director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell.

'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Season 1, Episode 5 Recap: 'The Host'

Last week, Ash vs. Evil Dead made the risky decision of not actually completing the episodic story it was telling. Interestingly enough, this was done the same weekend a new Netflix series, Jessica Jones, was released, thus re-starting the debate over television’s seemingly unfair move away from the idea of episodic story structure. Once Ash played this card, the big question became how the series was going to follow it up in this week’s “The Host.” Luckily for viewers, it turns out the program can indeed make this kind of move without issue because, once again, we’ve seen an episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead that completely stands up to scrutiny.

In addition to masterfully concluding the show’s first true two-part arc, “The Host” also turned out to be an episode that proved the relevancy of Bruce Campbell’s supporting players – particularly that of Dana DeLorenzo. Because the show has been so Ash focused (no thanks to its title), that man’s cohorts have been given little opportunity to truly shine. Of course, we get the occasional tidbit that adds to the characters of Pablo and Kelly, but for the most part they serve as aids to Ash. Really, the abandoning of this particular character structure is one of the main reasons why “The Host” is so enjoyable.

Ray Santiago says being covered in fake blood feels like ‘a bunch of Chihuahuas are licking you’

In Saturday night’s (Nov. 28) episode of “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” the team is confronted by a new challenge as one of their own becomes possessed by the demon which was resurrected in episode 3, “Books From Beyond.”

It seems that demon has followed the trio to Pablo’s (Ray Santiago) uncle’s place where some gruesome events play out. Episode 5, titled “The Host” shifts the focus away from Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo), and gives the audience more of an understanding of what Pablo can bring to the table.

“Ash vs Evil Dead” Clip: Ash’s Decomposed Hand Points the Way!

From bloody-disgusting.com:

I hope you guys are keeping up with “Ash vs Evil Dead” on Starz.

This past Saturday we saw Ash (Bruce Campbell) go on an insane trip, which reveals sidekick Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) is possessed by a demon. But the biggest moment is when Ruby (Lucy Lawless) reveals that she’s in possession of Ash’s hand that he lopped off 30 years prior in Evil Dead II. The was the first time the show has actually connected back to the original films in the series, and it was welcomed with open arms. There was also the tease that Pablo (Ray Santiago) is crafting a brand new hand for Ash, which has me wondering if we’ll eventually see an amped up chainsaw like in the awesome Evil Dead video game (a circular saw, baby!).

Looking ahead to next Saturday’s “Ash vs Evil Dead” Ep 105, ‘The Host,’ Ruby and Fisher join forces in pursuit of Ash. How do they find him? Well, they let Ash’s lopped off hand point the way!

Pablo: iHorror Interviews Ash vs Evil Dead’s Ray Santiago

The horror world brimmed with anticipation for “Ash vs Evil Dead,” and it has delivered on its promise. Part of that delivery has been due to the return of Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, but just as important have been the likability of the new characters inhabiting the Evil Dead universe.
Courageous and lovable, Pablo has proven the perfect sidekick to The King, and “Ash vs Evil Dead” fans have Ray Santiago to thank for that.

'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Recap: Feed Your Head

Last week on Ash vs. Evil Dead, the show put its unique splatstick spin on Hellraiser. This time out, it took on the Monkees' Head. The Pre-Fab Four's film, a free-form psychedelic-era artifact (written by Jack Nicholson!), is as good a touchstone as any for the far-out trip Ash J. Williams went on this week — that, or the "I Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" dream sequence from The Big Lebowski. Our working theory was that tonight's episode, "Brujo," was going to offer AvED's version of New World witchcraft. Instead, it showed us El Jefe's brain on drugs. As the man himself might put it: Groovy.

Bruce Campbell: Reddit Ask Me Anything

http://upvoted.com/video/bruce-campbe...

With an astounding 116 acting credits to his name, Bruce Campbell has seen—and played—it all. Many people probably know him best from The Evil Dead universe, where he plays the chainsaw-handed Ash Williams. This past Halloween, Starz unveiled their latest series, Ash vs. Evil Dead. In it, Campbell reprises his illustrious role—but this time as a PTSD-riddled Ash. The show was created and executive produced by original Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi.

Get Ready to be Spooked by Village Inspired by The Evil Dead

MALLESWARAM: You walk through a dimly-lit lane and enter a room which has a banyan tree. You look up into its branches and an eerie apparition starts a conversation with you. To your left is a person with a haunted face and to the right, is a figure hanging down the branches.

This is no nightmare but simply the beginning of the Scary Village that has opened in Mantri Mall on Tuesday.

T Srinivas, who is the founder director of Scary House and Scary Village concepts, came up with the idea when he decided that people are bored of the haunted house and may need an entire village to spook them. “Scary House as the concept has been in since over a decade,” he said. He would know, he runs two Scary Houses in Garuda Mall and Mantri Square.

This village is India’s first animatronics walk-through village spread over 4,000 sq ft and has illusions, sound-effects and lighting through a mockup of a village. “Animatronics is the combination of mechanics, electronics, robotics, arts and programming,” he said.

What else will people get to see in Scary Village? While Scary House only has a confusing way and a few elements that will scare you, Scary Village has a set-up of a village with about 10-15 huts, wells, doors and a ghost popping out of those huts. What more?

A visitor gets to see dark illusions created with mirrors and hear the howling of spirits.

The company will change the set every three months to spook every regular visitor.

A walk through takes about five to 10 minutes. But you will leave dashing for the door. And the hangover will remain for days.

So how did the idea of Scary House come to him? “It was the horror movies, especially The Evil Dead, that inspired me,” he said. “Also I wanted to give people a different kind of entertainment apart from just going for a movie or to malls to shop.”

4 Moments You Have to See in Ash vs Evil Dead Season 1 Episode 3 “Books from Beyond”

Waiting for each new episode of Starz’s hit genre series, Ash vs Evil Dead is a painstaking process. It’s an absolutely stunning show, quickly earning a place on countless critics’ must-see list, and we get it. We really do. Up to this point the series is flawless. Bruce Campbell is back and just as groovy as he’s ever been, he’s got a great supporting cast to work with, he’s drenched in buckets of blood and… oh the Deadites. Those nasties are something serious! So as Sunday arrives, and Monday shambles in, we grow impatient. By the time Friday rolls around we’re just about in physical agony, ready to jump out of our skin waiting for the story to continue barreling forward.

That’s what a masterpiece does to a fan.

'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Star Ray Santiago Recounts Bloody Scenes in the Wilderness [Exclusive]

How far would you be willing to go to land the role of a life time?

Maybe you could do what actor Ray Santiago did when he met with Sam Raimi and tell him that he was willing to be "covered in as much as blood as possible" and "run through the wilderness completely naked."

The Mexican-American actor has played a plethora of roles through the years in such shows as "The Jury," "Dexter," "10 Things I Hate About You," "Law & Order: LA," "Touch" and "Backstrom" among others. But despite his lengthy career trajectory, few would deny that the actor has just hit his career sweet-spot landing the role of Pablo Simon Bolivar, who as his last two names suggest is slated to be a major hero in the series.

Ash Shoots Pablo Down And Offers Him A Churro In An Exclusive Clip From This Week’s ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’

Last we left our gang on Ash vs. Evil Dead, our main trio of Ash (Bruce Campbell), Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) had decided to join forces against the Deadites. In this exclusive clip from tomorrow’s new episode, “Books from Beyond,” the three try to figure out what to call themselves because that’s what the best teams do, right? 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' Sneak Peek: Lucy Lawless Brings the Pain

As his chainsaw-handed alter ego, Ash Williams, Bruce Campbell has three decades worth of experience fighting the evil dead. But based on this clip from the third episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead — Starz’s continuation of the enduring Evil Dead film franchise — it seems that his most formidable opponent may be someone who is very much alive. That someone is former Cylon, Warrior Princess, and Mrs. Ron Swanson, Lucy Lawless, who plays Ruby, a woman with mysterious motives but one very clear goal: find Ash by any means necessary.

Bruce Campbell's Ronald Reagan Impression Pays Off In Tonight's Episode of Fargo

“Waiting for Dutch” was the name of this season’s Fargo premiere — and now the wait is over with tonight’s episode, “The Gift of the Magi,” when Bruce Campbell guest stars as Ronald Reagan in the FX anthology series. We meet a pre-POTUS Reagan on a campaign swing through tiny Luverne, Minnesota, where “Dutch” gives a stump speech for his 1980 presidential bid.

Groovy Bruce nails it as The Great Communicator. He’s got it all going on, from the charisma and palpable patriotism to the rosy cheeks and Brylcreem in his black pompadour. Not to mention Reagan’s velvet-smooth voice.

Artist Creates “The Littlest Deadite”, A Children’s Book of ‘Evil Dead II’

Artist Sean Hughes is a big fan of the Evil Dead series. And who can blame him? None of the movies are anything less than highly entertaining, some of them even offering a few scares here and there and definitely a hefty supply of blood and gore.

But what about the people that want to share those kinds of experiences with their children? And I’m not talking about 9 or 10 year olds here. I’m talking about the ones that you still tuck into bed, the ones that are barely out of their strollers, the ones that you read a bedtime story to. Well, that’s where Hughes comes in.

Mimi Rogers Shines (Despite All The Blood) In ‘Ash Vs Evil Dead’

Most of the deadites encountered so far in Ash vs Evil Dead have been secondary and tertiary characters. Suzy’s arrival, however, presents the series with its first uncertain case. Plus, she’s the mother of one of the protagonists, a potentially heartstrings-pulling narrative device not unlike the evil’s first victims in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, who were Ash’s friends and girlfriend. It’s one thing to kill the deadite version of your awful boss, but a possessed loved one? All the feels.

Rogers excels as Suzy Maxwell. The moral conundrum posed by her character’s murky position in the story is enough to push the show into uncharted territory, but Rogers’ performance seals the deal. Is she a deadite? Or is Ash being too paranoid? These questions drive “Bait” until the very end.

'Ash vs Evil Dead' Recap: The Parent Trap

A Mother's Day from hell makes the series' second episode no sophomore slump

Is it premature to declare the birth of a whole new TV-show genre? Tonight's Ash vs. Evil Dead episode — "Bait" — boasts more gore-soaked scenes than half a True Blood season and better gags than the bulk of the broadcast networks' fall comedy line-up. What do you call the result? Action, drama, sitcom, horror — none of these feel quite right. It's some high-octane hybrid of all of them, and it pursues a single purpose with all the relentlessness of the reanimated dead: to entertain the living shit out of you.

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell on Refusing to Compromise for 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' and The State of Modern Horror

Speaking to Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi is an awful lot like watching "Ash vs. Evil Dead." Campbell, who plays the one-handed titular hero, is a burst of energy with lots to say and no filter (or a desire for one). Meanwhile, Raimi supports his lead actor with a handful of smart comments at all the right moments, establishing solid ground from which Campbell can leap.

And leap he does, both below in Indiewire's conversation with the pair, and in the show (now airing Saturday nights on Starz). Campbell and Raimi touch on everything from the importance of Starz's commitment to the series to what's so important about having real heroes to watch on TV.

Ash vs Evil Dead Showrunner on Ash's ''Zero'' Progression, His Time Travel History and More

Eric Goldman writes:

While Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell are all involved in Ash vs Evil Dead as executive producers, and Raimi co-wrote and directed the first episode, it’s Craig DiGregorio who is serving as showrunner and guiding the continuing story of Ash Williams (Campbell). I sat down with the Chuck, Reaper and Workaholics writing alum to discuss what it’s like becoming a part of this beloved franchise in such a crucial manner, while collaborating with the Evil Dead creators.

We also discussed Lucy Lawless’ character, Ruby, how much (if at all) Ash has changed since we last saw him and more – including whether we should assume the Ash in this show traveled back in time and experienced the events of Army of Darkness, given the show can’t directly bring up that film, thanks to legal issues.

Bruce Campbell On Ash vs. Evil Dead, Fargo and Why He's Not As Typecast As You Think - PAPERMAG

There was a time when horror and comedy were the peanut butter and chocolate that no one dared to mix. That ended decisively with the release of Sam Raimi's debut film, 1981's The Evil Dead which, along with its sequel, 1987's Evil Dead II, created a self-aware universe that balanced buckets of gore, smirks, slapstick, knowing callbacks and some totally sweet zombie kills. Key to making this delicate balance was the film's star, Raimi's childhood friend Bruce Campbell, who never seemed like he was taking anything too seriously, even when he was swinging a chainsaw around like a badass.

The Evil Dead series launched the career of Campbell, an A-Level talent always most comfortable rolling around in the B-Movie sandbox. His career has included fun, pulp TV shows (Burn Notice, Xena: Warrior Princess and The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.), cult films (like the Elvis Battles the Undead romp Bubba Ho-Tep) appearances in mainstream hits (the Spider-Man movies, Congo and The Hudsucker Proxy) and a few SciFi channel originals. But it's Evil Dead's Ash Williams, last seen in 1992's Army of Darkness (save for a brief cameo in the 2013 Evil Dead remake) that made him a hero to the ComicCon crowd. Campbell and Raimi have reunited for Starz' Ash vs. Evil Dead, which premieres on Halloween and does not, Campbell assures his fans, tone down a thing. He's also playing Ronald Reagan on Fargo this Fall, because the man's hustle does not stop. We got on the phone with Campbell to talk about Ashing it up again and why he's not nearly as typecast as you think.

FotoKem’s Alastor Arnold helps set look for ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’

The colorist worked hand in hand with director Sam Raimi and editor

While the show was shot digitally on Arri Alexa (with a couple of pickups shot via a Sony F55), Raimi wanted a filmic look, and that is a big part of what Murawski and Arnold worked to accomplish.

Arnold has some history with Raimi and Murawski — he remastered The Evil Dead for theatrical and Blu-ray release. While Murawski and Arnold work together often, Ash vs Evil Dead is only the second project for the colorist and Raimi.

Guy Creates Adorable ‘Evil Dead’ Fisher Price Pull Toy

Jonathan Barkan writes:

The creativity and ingenuity of some people will never fail to astound me. Couple that with undying passion and a healthy dose of obsessive fandom and you’ve got yourself someone who can make amazing things simply because they can!

Take, for example, this amazing Evil Dead-themed Fisher Price-esque pull toy designed by Steve Casino, which shows protagonist Ash waving his chainsaw arm and shotgun while a podium in front of him, that has the Necronomicon atop it, opens and closes, revealing a tiny Henrietta from Evil Dead II. The cool thing is that if you turn it around, Ash’s face becomes the Deadite Ash from the second film. Just a neat little bonus that adds a lot to the piece.

Ash vs. Evil Dead – Exclusive Chat with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell

Just in case you were too busy putting razor blades in apples on Halloween night or accidentally drank so much pumpkin beer that you passed out on a bed of candy, consider this a friendly reminder that the new Starz series “Ash vs Evil Dead” (review) had its premiere on Halloween night.

It’s now available for free on the Starz website and will be airing pretty much nonstop on the network itself all week. Just the pilot would be something to get excited over, but fans of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead universe have been spoiled rotten as ten full episodes of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” are about to be unleashed. Not only that, but Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi sat down with Dread Central to talk about the show, and it looks like Bruce is up for multiple seasons of the series! So make sure to keep watching, or Bruce will blame you for killing the franchise.

NECA Teases “Ash vs Evil Dead” Toys: First Image Revealed

NECA Toys, who happen to have one of the most entertaining Twitter feeds (they seriously don’t give a fuck), announced last night that they will be bringing a series of “Ash vs Evil Dead” toys to the market in 2016. They also teased a figure in the form of the eyeless demonic deadite that we’ve seen in trailers.

“Ash vs Evil Dead” premiered last night and, if Twitter has anything to say about it, was met with joy and acclaim from fans and viewers. You can read our own review of the first two episodes right here.

NECA is well known to horror fans for their vast array of licensed toys, figurines, and collectibles, including many horror titles such as Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, House of 1,000 Corpses, Beetlejuice, Evil Dead 2, Alien, Scream 4, Predator, etc… The list seriously goes on and on. It’s fantastic to see that they’ll be releasing the “Ash vs Evil Dead” toys as they clearly have the passion to do it justice.

‘Ash vs Evil Dead': Bruce Campbell Talks Blood, Sidekicks, and Hating Ash’s Car

Christina Radish writes:

Starz’s 10-episode half-hour series Ash vs. Evil Dead is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film franchise from Sam Raimi (who also directed the first episode). Aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter Ash (Bruce Campbell) has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of Deadites. But when a plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons, whether he likes it or not.

Having gotten the opportunity to screen the first two episodes, I can say that it’s funny, it’s over-the-top gory, and it’s absolutely everything that I want and expect from The Evil Dead franchise. During this exclusive interview with Collider, actor Bruce Campbell talked about how gratifying it is that there are still so many fans of Ash and Evil Dead, why it was more feasible to continue this story as a TV series, how bizarre it was to get back on set and into this character’s shoes, why he likes the half-hour pacing of the show, pushing the envelope on the blood and gore, getting to have sidekicks, why he hates that car, and that he feels they’re only just getting started with the story.
