Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell Explain How ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ Is the Revival Fans Wanted

Fred Topel writes:

My most anticipated panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour was the Starz panel for Ash Vs. Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell dominated the panel, both via questions asked of him, and those asked of his costars and collaborators. Wearing a white dinner jacket and what could’ve quite possibly been alligator shoes (from this distance from the stage), Campbell made sure to let the room know he was there as he talked about the bloody show and his long relationship with fans.

'Ash Vs. Evil Dead' answers the important question: Will there be blood?

From the horror movie franchise that coined the term "splatstick," there's one thing the new Starz TV series extension of the "Evil Dead" movies needs to get right: It needs to be bloody. And star Bruce Campbell is ready to answer fans, yes, there will be blood.

EW: Ash vs. Evil Dead is not a 'watered-down version' of the films, says Bruce Campbell

Ash is back, baby — and despite moving to TV, he won’t be pulling any punches.

In Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell reprises his role as the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. Now, when a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons — personal and literal.

“It would be silly of us to rip the fans off by doing a watered-down version of the series,” Campbell said Friday at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour. “If this came out as a movie, it would be unrated. … The beauty of working with Starz is we have no content restriction whatsoever.”

Bruce Campbell Says ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ Series Could Lead To More ‘Dead’ Movies – TCA

“This series will force us to make more movies,” Bruce Campbell said today at the TCA session. “That’s only 10 hours of programming; we need eight more movies,” the Ash Vs. Evil Dead star joked about what the franchise’s zealous fans would demand. “Making a fourth movie would work. … No matter what we give them, it will never be enough.”

Garth Manor Brings out the Dead: FX maestro Robert Kurtzman on the seminal Evil Dead 2

The elevator pitch for 1987's classic comedy-horror Evil Dead 2 would be simple: the same, but more. More blood, more monsters, more chain saw-wielding craziness. Without the beast-wrangling skills of effects genius Robert Kurtzman, the sequel would have had much less splatter. Kurtzman still leaves his bloody handprint over contemporary creature flicks like last year's werewolf wonder Late Phases, but he returns to the scene of one of his original crimes with a special 35mm screening, courtesy of the ghouls of Garth Manor.

SDCC: ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’s’ Campbell, Lawless & More Spill Their Guts

“I haven’t come to a comic con promoting an ‘Evil Dead’ since probably ‘Army of Darkness,'” “Ash vs Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell declared during an interview with press at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “But I don’t think I even came to Comic-Con at that time for ‘Army of Darkness’ — which was 24 years ago. It’s great. It’s the maximum potential, because now people aren’t going, [whiny voice] ‘Hey, I remember you. You’re the guy that was Ash.’ They’re like, ‘You’re fucking Ash! You’re playing Ash.’ It makes people very happy.”

Campbell responded to a fan who was asking about “The Classic” and stated that the original vehicle was shipped to New Zealand for the filming of the 10-episode show.

Why Ash vs Evil Dead Is Doing Half-Hour Episodes

From cinemablend.com:

There’s been a large debate going on in the TV realm over the last several years as genre-bending comedies and dramas make their way onto television and into different Emmy categories. Shows with nontraditional formats often have trouble figuring out just where they fall in the TV spectrum. It’s a problem that the creative team over at Ash vs Evil Dead encountered when figuring out whether or not the new series would be a half hour or hour-long program. In a press room at San Diego Comic-Con, we talked to Sam and Ivan Raimi, who revealed why they ultimately opted to go with the half-hour episodes.

Ash vs Evil Dead | 2015 | Full HD Trailer #1

Source: bloody-disgusting.com

Bruce Campbell: Playing Ash again really messed with my head

SAN DIEGO - If watching "Ash vs. Evil Dead" makes you feel like you're stepping into a time machine, consider what it must be like for Bruce Campbell to suit up as the chainsaw-handed hero after 20-plus years.

"They've recreated a couple of original elements of the movie to a very disturbing degree," he told us at San Diego Comic Con. "I mean, it really messes with your head."

Among these original elements is the original 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 used in the first "Evil Dead" film, which director Sam Raimi has kept locked in a secret storage facility all these years -- away from the vindictive hands of his lead actor.

"...he will never reveal [the storage facility's location] to me because he knows I will destroy the car if I find it," said Campbell. "I have a rivalry with that car."

Ash vs Evil Dead: Sam Raimi & Bruce Campbell Talk Time Travel for Future Seasons

Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Bruce Campbell talk about how time travel could happen in Ash vs. Evil Dead, and the effect of Army of Darkness.

David Crow writes:

While chatting with Ash vs. Evil Dead executive producers Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi, as well as the incomparable Chin starring in the series himself, one Bruce Campbell, it was made abundantly clear that this series will be returning the focus onto Ash Williams and his world. Despite there having once been talk of Ash crossovers with other movie franchises, and all sorts of bizarre ideas, Ash vs. Evil Dead is firmly set in the world established by the original Evil Dead Trilogy (with an apparent emphasis on both the horror of the first film and the comedy of the sequels).

However, just because the first season is set in a modern, relatively grounded world, it doesn’t mean that it has to stay there. In fact, this is exactly what I asked Sam and Ivan Raimi about during a joint interview at San Diego Comic-Con when I brought up the prospect of time travel after Ashley Williams warped to the Middle Ages in Army of Darkness.

What Bruce Campbell Hates About Shooting The Evil Dead Franchise

Bruce Campbell has been a part of the Evil Dead franchise since the original movie hit theaters way back in the early 80s. Clearly, he’s a fan of playing lead character Ash or he wouldn’t have worked to get Starz’s upcoming TV series made. However, any great job still has its own share of pitfalls, and Campbell shared what he feels has been the worst part of creating Ash Vs Evil Dead at a recent press room at Comic-Con. Apparently, all of the fake blood still grosses the actor out completely.

The Daily News gets a firsthand look at the creepy Book of the Dead for Starz' "Ash vs. Evil Dead"

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - Bound in human flesh, written in blood and carrying the curse of the ages — and it’s not Donald Trump’s latest best-seller.

Yes, Ash (Bruce Campbell) is back and he’s reading again from the Book of the Dead. No good can comes from that.

The Daily News had a chance to hold and pore over the new `Necronomicon’ on set as Starz was shooting the seventh of the 10-episode “Ash vs. Evil Dead” series, debuting later this year.

“It is based on a flayed, cut-off face,” Roger Murray, prosthetics designer, says.

He turns the book over to reveal the stitching adhering the face to the book and creeping up its binding.

The book at the heart of the show heralds back to the original 1981 cult horror film directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell.

It spawned two sequels, “Evil Dead II” and “Army of Darkness” and follows the twisted and silly tale of Ash, who is forced to frequently face off with “Deadites” — evil spirits that possess the living and are usually destroyed via gory decapatations and gruesome dismemberments.

Ash vs Evil Dead’s New Creatures: ‘Anything Can Come out of’ Necronomicon

Perhaps the highlight of a trailer, which itself was a highlight of San Diego Comic-Con, was the glimpse at Ash vs. Evil Dead’s non-deadite threats. Namely this towering, weird beast. Knowing the series would unleash various creatures beyond the deadite proper, Shock asked showrunner Craig DiGregorio what to expect from a season of supernatural plague.

“I think the deadites are going to be much the same as far as their mythology goes, but I do think the show is expanding the mythology of the Necronomicon and the book, and what the bigger mythology is around the deadites,” the writer explains.

EW: Bruce Campbell promises you will 'so not be ripped off' by Ash vs Evil Dead

First you want to kill him. Then you want to kiss him. That paraphrase from Army of Darkness pretty much sums up Bruce Campbell’s Ash in the Evil Dead trilogy. The buffoon has a habit of unwittingly unleashing evil spirits, yet then manages to somehow vanquish them through sheer will and badassery. Now he’s back at it in Starz’s TV series incarnation (and, yes, incantation) of the franchise, Ash vs Evil Dead (debuting this fall).

Cult Corner: 'The Evil Dead' Just Won't Die

Technically speaking, you could argue that Sam Raimi‘s The Evil Dead has transcended cult status and become an important part of mainstream entertainment history. It’s given birth to a popular film trilogy, a lauded remake, and Starz is producing a pulpy television spin-off, Ash vs. Evil Dead, that will debut later this year. However, we’re including it in Cult Corner because it carries all the hallmarks of a true cult classic. It was filmed under difficult conditions on a shoestring budget, wasn’t immediately popular stateside, and only found its audience through word-of-mouth.

EW: More exclusive images of Bruce Campbell in Ash vs Evil Dead

Last week, we gave you the first image of Bruce Campbell back as Ash for Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead, as well as six pages from the Necronomicon (which I seriously hope you did not read out loud).

Now it’s time to keep this extremely bloody party going with two more exclusive images of Ash from the upcoming series. In the first one above, we see a post-confrontation Ash with new sidekick Pablo (Ray Santiago) in Ash’s car. And not just car, but director Sam Raimi’s Delta — known affectionately as “the Classic” — from the original trilogy.

“Sam’s original Delta is back,” says Campbell. “I’m talking the ‘73 Delta 88. The Classic is back! I’ve driven it. I did a William Shatner power-slide in that car. That’s the only spoiler I’m gonna give you: that Ash and that car — we can power-slide. I met William Shatner on the convention circuit, and I talked about T.J. Hooker. He talked to me about how he power-slides those cars in T.J. Hooker. So I took Shatner’s advice, and I used that advice to do a T.J. Hooker combo-platter — with the Classic — power-slide.”

In the second image, available below, we see a vintage-looking Ash action shot with our misfit hero clearly in the throes of battle. Campbell says you can expect plenty of mayhem along with plenty of typical Ash bravado. “There’s going to be a lot of the classic, over-the-top, in-your-face fullness, with a pretty trash-talking Ash,” says the star. “In a TV series, people gotta talk, so Ash will have more dialogue than he’s pretty much ever had. There’s a pretty high count of Ash’s classic one-liners. They’re back, and they’re strong, and they’re flourishing!”

Ash vs Evil Dead: Sam Raimi explains why he likes to torment Bruce Campbell

There are many reasons to be excited for the return of the Evil Dead franchise in Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead this fall. We can get excited for the sure-to-be steady stream of one-liners. We can get excited for that intoxicating “splatstick” mix of horror and comedy. And we can get excited for the return of everyone’s favorite boomstick-wielding misfit, Ash.

But there is another, more nefarious reason to get excited — the on-screen punishment inflicted on star Bruce Campbell. But here’s the best part about it: There’s no need to feel bad about delighting in the physical abuse Campbell endures for the sake of his art. After all, his director doesn’t! We spoke to Sam Raimi about the seeming joy he derives from making his lifelong friend suffer while filming, and his feelings on the matter may just be my favorite thing of all time. Ladies and gentlemen, Sam Raimi on beating up Bruce Campbell:

“Ash vs Evil Dead” Teaser Is Short But Sweet #SDCC

Info from bloody-disgusting.com:

There are teasers and then there are teasers.

Bruce Campbell is strapping on his chainsaw and loading up his boom-stick for his return as Ash in Starz’s “Ash vs Evil Dead.”

While the trailer will premiere online this coming Friday (following the San Diego Comic-Con presentation), Campbell is already scratching our itch with this super brief teaser that shows Ash’s now famous 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88!

Ash’s “everyday man’s tank” has appeared in all four Evil Dead films, and has traveled through time at the end of Evil Dead 2 before taking on Deadites in Army of Darkness.
Now, after a brief cameo in the Evil Dead remake, the car will rev back to life in the new episode series arriving this October.
