Sam Raimi’s Secret Alien Invasion Movie to Land at Warner Bros.?

Claude Brodesser-Akner writes:
Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and District 9 producer Bill Block are deep into negotiations with Warner Bros to set up a massive new movie called EDF, based on a script from Air Force One screenwriter and Castle executive producer Andrew Marlowe. Block's QED International, which helped financed District 9, is co-financing the project. We've read it and are unashamed to say we love it: Mix Top Gun with Independence Day and add a pinch of The Last Starfighter, and you'll get EDF — which stands for "Earth Defense Force," though we hear the title may change — about Earth's response to an imminent alien invasion.

Featured Video: The Evil Dead (Sweded)

Info:
Here's probably the end-all Sweded film from me. I just don't think we could top this.

It's The Evil Dead (with a few choice bits stolen from Evil Dead 2). We shot this in Ethan Cockerham's old house that is abandoned and it was SCARY AS HELL. There were HUGE spiders and rat droppings everywhere. The paint and wallpaper was peeling off and it was amazing. We absolutely trashed that place. We cut up a door so it would shut, the carpet in the main room we shot in was absolutely soaked in Karo Syrup.

Very tough shoot, it rained 90% of the time (over 2 nights of shooting). One cast member got drunk before the first shot, another was 2 hours late both nights. We also had half of the first days shooting ruined by a technical error (the video was all pixelated and the audio was messed up).

But we got it done, by the deadline for the Sweded Horror Festival run by the Shadowbox.

Check it out!

Sam Raimi's Stars Road Sets 3 TV Projects

Nellie Andreeva
writes:

In its first development season since focusing on primetime TV with a first-look deal at Sony TV and the hire of CBS' Robert Zotnowski as TV head, Sam Raimi and Joshua Donen's Stars Road Entertainment has sold 3 hourlong projects to 3 networks, Fox, ABC and CBS.

While the company plans to develop across all TV, the the primary focus leading into its first year "was to find early success (on broadcast)," said Zotnowski, who was SVP drama at CBS, co-heading the network's drama department before he left in August 2009 to join Stars Road. The auspices involved in the company's 3 series projects, all produced by Sony TV, represent a mix of existing relationships Zotnowski has with TV writers and feature and comic book talent brought in by Raimi.

The ABC project hails from Dee Johnson, with whom Zotnowski worked on The Good Wife. Last year, Johnson served as executive producer/showrunner on the first 13 episodes of the CBS legal drama. The new project centers on a top female prosecutor in Los Angeles, whom Zotnowski describes as a "female vigilante with a law license."

The Fox project, Smokers, comes from comic book and TV writer Brian K. Vaughan, best known for creating the comic book series Y: The Last Man, and for his work as a writer on ABC's Lost. The high-concept drama, based on an original idea by Vaughan, is about a documentary crew following working class heroes who exterminate alien threats in deep space.

The third project, set at Zotnowski's former home, CBS, is Lancaster, from writer Andrew Lipsitz (CSI, CSI:NY). It centers on a Scotland yard detective who joins the LAPD. With broadcast selling season wrapping up, Stars Road is turning its sights on cable where it plans to pitch next.

I received this email today:
Hi there,

I'm a long-time Evil Dead fan and just stumbled across your blog - it's awesome! I recently did a piece of Ash fan art that I'm hoping to get signed by the man himself at the New York Comic Con. I'm an illustrator and character designer from England and I attend a lot of comic cons in the UK, usually as an exhibitor. I make original paintings of film, comic and video game characters to sell as well as prints and my own stuff. My blog and website are below if you fancy a look.

I don't know if you'd be interested in posting it or not, but I thought I'd drop you a line anyway!

Thanks for your time,

Jess Bradley

Exfanding Your Horizons: An Ode to Bruce Campbell (Though, Really It's Not Actually An Ode)

Alex
writes:
In his autobiography, it becomes increasingly clear that Bruce is as he appears to be in interviews and commentaries--unassuming, witty, and not one to take himself seriously. What also becomes apparent is just how dedicated Bruce is to the craft of acting, and how much he appreciates the success he’s had in film and TV.

While he doesn’t take himself very seriously at all, he certainly takes his roles seriously, and it’s no mystery why he’s been such a workhorse for so many films, TV shows, commercials, etc., throughout his career.

Hollywood Hates Me: Bad Ash vs. Bizarro

So Bad Ash is like the bad version of Evil Dead Ash, who isn’t really all that good when you think about it. And Bizarro was conceived as the mirror image of Superman, because someone had been reading a lot of Jung at the time.

This here's the toy version of Bad Ash, because it was hard to find the movie version. Lots of scantily clad ladies though, if you're looking to do an image search yourself.

Bizarro's little "No. 1" badge is made of awesome.

Which alternate version of a hero will come out on top?

And do you even care?

(Of course you do.)

Empire | The 33 Greatest Movie Trilogies

10. The Evil Dead Trilogy

Made for next to nothing, the first Evil Dead hit our screens with such bloody bravado it was soon hailed as the ultimate in Video Nasties, all red-dyed corn syrup and seriously hammy acting, making up for what it lacked in production values with out-and-out gruelling horror. It scared the hell out of people, and they wanted more. Six years later and Raimi, Campbell and Tapert returned with more of a budget and more buckets of blood, creating what has now come to be regarded as a zombie-movie masterpiece and one of the most quotable films in horror history - nay, in history. And to complete the set, Raimi had long wanted Ash to get medieval on those deadites' asses and in 1993 he got his way, completing the finest horror trilogy ever created with a bigger, barmier finale. Groovy.

Army of Darkness Game Coming To The App Store In Early 2011

John Brownlee writes:
Much as I love Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series of tongue-in-cheek horror films, and much as I have tried to emulate my virtues after that of its protagonist Deadite slayer Ash Williams, I have never found any of the myriad efforts to translate Army of Darkness‘ appeal to the video game form to be worth anything besides a derisive snort.

So I feel a little foolish getting so excited by word coming from Backflip Studios that they will be releasing a game based on Army of Darkness to the App Store early in 2011.

There’s almost no details so far, except that it will be a tower defense game, which is a surprising but remarkably appropriate choice, and you can expect several hours of Bruce Campbell’s snarling, macho and downright hysterical catch phrases as you blow hole after hole through the medieval dead with your trusty boomstick. Don’t bone this up, Backflip!

ArrowInTheHead.com: FEARnet's Zombie Roadkill to premiere at Fantastic Fest next week

Eric Walkuski writes:
We've been bringing you news and promos for FEARnet's new series ZOMBIE ROADKILL since August, last bringing you a fun trailer and a PSA; it looks like tongue-in-cheek fun in the best Sam Raimi tradition (his Ghost House banner produced the show). Now we've got a very cool update for those lucky f*ckers out there who are hitting up Fantastic Fest next week. The entire 6-part series will air in its entirety on Friday, SEPTEMBER 24th! In addition, we now know when the show will be available for everyone else to enjoy. Read on!

From the press release: Fantastic Fest will host a World Premiere screening of Zombie Roadkill, from FEARnet and Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures, at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar on Friday, September 24th at 8pm with Academy Award-nominated actor Thomas Haden Church, David Dorfman (The Ring films, Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and director David Green in attendance at a special post-screening Q&A, which will be moderated by FEARnet on-air host Spider (Powerman 5000). FEARnet will screen the terrifyingly twisted new six-part series in its entirety, followed by a Zombie Roadkill after-party. The FEARnet-sponsored insanity of the fourth annual Fantastic Feud will ensue a couple of days later!

Nathan Fillion: the new Bruce Campbell?

Charlotte Stear writes:
Two actors starring in very different films and shows, but there are numerous similarities between Nathan Fillion and Bruce Campbell, Charlotte reckons...

A theory has been formulating in my head for a long time now. Every time Nathan Fillion pops up in a film or on the TV, I can't help but think of similarities to Bruce Campbell.

No one should take this as an insult, since Nathan Fillion has become more mainstream than Campbell and has clocked up over 500,000 followers on his personal Twitter page. Yet for me, his career choices and his dedication to his fan mirror that of Bruce.

This is a good thing, given that Mr Campbell is a legend and all-round cult icon, as is the mighty Mr Fillion. Thus, I figured I should explain my theory in a little more detail...

Bruce Campbell Wants to Make Horror Movie ‘Expendables’

Ben Moore writes:
Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) wants to make an Expendables-esque horror movie with all the great horror actors of the past three decades, including himself.

The movie would be a sequel to Campbell’s practically universally-panned horror-comedy, My Name Is Bruce, called Bruce VS. Frankenstein, the plot of which would be Bruce Campbell as Bruce Campbell fighting Frankenstein’s monster (obviously).

I’m not sure I love the idea of a sequel to My Name Is Bruce in any capacity, but an Expendables-esque horror movie, decked out with the greatest horror actors of the past three decades and more? Sign me the hell up.

Imagine Bruce Campbell, hilarious as ever, teaming up with the likes of Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), Christopher Lee (Dracula), Tim Curry (It), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Robert Englund (A Nightmare On Elm Street), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th Part VII, VIII, IX, and X), Asia Argento (Land of the Dead), Tom Savini (From Dusk Till Dawn), Kathy Bates (Misery), Angus Scrimm (Phantasm), Choi Min-sik (Oldboy), Neve Campbell (Scream), Samuel L. Jackson (because he’s awesome)—and that’s just to start!

Bruce Campbell Says ‘Bruce Vs. Frankenstein’ Will Be “‘The Expendables’ of Horror”

The Reely Bored Blog: My Evil Dead Part III: The Army Rises!

When I saw the trailer for Army of Darkness in 1993, I was at a loss. It featured our brazen hero, Ash, once again battling the horrific deadites, only they didn’t look so horrific this time around. There were moments that made me chuckle a bit.

What is this and why am I laughing? This is not The Evil Dead, this is Army of Darkness! I was 13 years old and on the brink of my freshman year in high school. Since the time between Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, I wised up a bit, what-with going to high school and all, so it was no surprise to me to take notice that there was something different about this new installment into the franchise.
