I, like many, am a big fan of the original Sam Raimi classic The Evil Dead. The flick and its sequels have gone on to inspire many a filmmaker over the years, and this latest Aussie flick is no exception.
From the Krypto brothers comes Damned by Dawn, a loving homage to the blood-splattered franchise that's lighting up the horror scene with positive reviews. One look at the really cool trailer below, and we're sure you will be hooked, too.

Considered the last great 80's slasher film, guess it is because Intruder came 1989 otherwise nothing great about it. Don't get me wrong, it is as good as any slasher film, but then seeing works of the Sam Raimi you know it is nothing more than a failed attempt at making the formula that made him great.
Of course, slasher films are never original. But this one is a little better than the rest because it has some gore filled gruesome killings, a visual feast for any horror fan – enough to overlook the shortcomings. The actors, half are good to watch and the other half wooden. The Raimi brothers & Campbell are good to watch on screen. Dan Hicks is the real star of the film, missing from all publicity. Its difficult to say who is worse Elizabeth Cox or Renne Estevez. But the characters are more likable than usual, making the film good to watch.
The playful camera work is sometimes very effective and sometimes makes you wonder why copy Raimi's visual style. Anyways, pretty good watch.

Update on the World of Warcraft movie! Last we heard, people were working on scripts. No we hear things aren't even at that stage."We've been through a number of story meetings, and we're still kind of getting it together with [director Sam] Raimi and his team and jamming on themes that we want to chase", Blizzard creative chief Chris Metzen tells VG247. We're kinda getting a lot of values together – what kind of story we want to tell, what do we want people to feel, what is the best way to look at this big franchise."
As for how closely the film will align with the game's extensive canon, Metzen says "The games are always going to be the core canon 'franchise' or whatever, but looking at things like Spider-man or X-men or films we've seen over time, especially based on ideas that have been around a long time – since the 60s, or whatever – it's kind of like a new expression. We're still dealing with how 'canon' will [the film] be. And I don't have a great answer for that yet, but I think the game side will always be the core experience of what Warcraft is."
"My intention with the feature is that it is as close as possible to what people have experienced and what they know of our canon, but we'll have to see the way it plays out. And I don't mean that facetiously – we're still trying to figure it out."
Fans dying for a look at the project will be bummed to hear it's still in the "inside people's heads" stage, but on the bright side, at least they're taking their time with it all, and taking it seriously! More video game properties could have done with this much forethought.

And so the randomisation continues. The 1987 sequel to The Evil Dead is something of a system reboot, a kind of remake with an expanded budget; although it continues from where it left off, with Bruce Campbell’s Ash having survived the events of the previous night in the demonically possessed cabin, it restages and amplifies the key motifs of the first episode. We are still in a cabin in the woods, and Ash is still forced to battle frothing-at-the-mouth nasties, this time armed with chainsaw and shotgun. The sequel addresses an audience it has already selected and wooed – it misses the first film’s element of surprise, but compensates with a hyper-kinetic and hysterical visual style that speaks for an accelerated race through genre conventions and the systematic brutalisation of its long-suffering hero.
Not a collectible but a really cool, homemade chainsaw prop from Evil dead. It’s light weight and safe. If you want to go as Ash for Halloween you’ll for sure be getting high fives from all the guys but if you plan on hitting on girls with a chainsaw attached to your arm think again. So, I know I'm not the only one here who will pick up a bag of craft stuff at the thrift store or at a yard sale without even caring what exactly is in it. If I see a few skeins of floss or some acrylic paint or whatever in there, I don't care what else is in it ... it's only a dollar! I'm grabbing it! Well, that's how I got this bookmark strip of Aida. It was really, really long and somebody had done a few clusters of cherries, so I cut those off and finished the edges and had myself a new cherry bookmark... and a blank strip just waiting for me to stitch on. Anyhow, I thought that an Army of Darkness bookmark was needed, one with what Ash was supposed to say upon picking up the Necronomicon. You know, so I don't ever forget them should I be in a similar situation.
I can't count the times I've thought to myself, "This craft beer sure is tasty. But you know how it could be improved? If Bruce Campbell was drinking alongside me."
Well, actually, I can't think of a situation in life that wouldn't be improved a little bit of Bruce Campbell.
In that spirit, if you've yet to formulate plans for this evening, consider checking out the Evil Dead movie night at the new and improved Funky Buddha Lounge and Brewery.
Starting at 8 p.m., the brew house will play the entire Evil Dead trilogy on it's projection screen. Bonus points for anyone who can down their drinks for every classic line Ash utters. ("This is my boom stick!" "Glug!")
The only thing that would improve the night? If they had Alesmith's Evil Dead Red on tap. But don't worry. Funky Buddha has plenty of other great craft beers to choose from.
Sorry, 'Legend of the Seeker' fans. It looks like the syndicated fantasy show couldn't cast a spell over enough viewers to earn a third season, as the Ausiello Files is reporting that Sam Raimi's swashbuckling series has been canceled.
'Seeker' was having a tough time pulling in decent numbers for local stations associated with its distributor, Tribune Stations Group. Apparently, not even a steamy girl-on-girl kiss between 'Buffy' alum Charisma Carpenter and hottie Tabrett Bethell could generate enough interest to keep the show alive. A number of Tribune stations dropped 'Seeker' last month, and the networks have shown no interest in picking it up, leading to its cancellation.
Now is not a great time for action-oriented cult TV shows. With 'Seeker' on the chopping block and last year's cancellation of 'Stargate Atlantis,' it seems like the tube is being scrubbed clean of light, fun, geek-friendly series. It's definitely not the '90s anymore, when shows like Raimi and Robert Tapert's 'Hercules' and 'Xena' could go for six seasons. Let's hope one of the better action-packed shows to debut this year, Fox's 'Human Target,' can beat the current trend.

Five college students decided to read an ancient book about demon reincarnation on a spring break trip to an old abandoned cabin in the woods. They didn’t tell anyone where they were going and weren’t familiar with the area, but merrily pushed on with few inhibitions.
What could possibly go wrong?
If the first answer that comes to mind includes zombie-like creatures, gallons of fake blood, chainsaws, general dismemberment and bad puns all set to clever musical numbers, you’ve got the latest production from the Flathead Valley Community College theater department: “Evil Dead: The Musical.”

Neil Marshall has revealed that his horror film Burst will begin production over the summer.
The Centurion director told DS that he and producer Sam Raimi are planning to move forward with the 3D project in the coming months.
He said: "[It's] about people exploding in 3D, which should be a lot of fun! I'm doing it with Sam Raimi. It's called Burst, hopefully going into production in the summertime."

Flashback: the UC Theater in Berkeley, circa 1985. The double feature that night was The Evil Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street, neither of which I had seen, and the house was packed with exactly the “right” crowd for this kind of movie mayhem.
The group I went with that night was the Diablo Valley College Filmmakers Association, the president of which was my high school friend — and now Popdose colleague — Ted Asregadoo. He recalls our group giving The Evil Dead (1981) a standing ovation at the end. While I don’t specifically remember that detail, I do recall the entire evening being one of the most satisfying filmgoing experiences I’ve ever had.
Ted Raimi, a cult iconic actor, has dozens of roles over various television shows and movies. He often works on projects with Sam Raimi, his brother and acclaimed director, and Bruce Campbell, another cult iconic actor. Raimi sat with IESB for an exclusive interview during the WizardWorld event in Anaheim over the weekend. He was mainly promoting his directorial series called "Playing Dead" and he was a bit mum on an upcoming project with Bruce Campbell and admitted to not involve in any current Sam Raimi projects for now.

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have been best friends since the year dot. It was down to both of them that Raimi got his first directorial break, playing about with Super 8 cameras as teenagers and putting together Within The Woods in 1978 (they were 19 years old at the time), a horror short that eventually raised £350,000 and kickstarted Raimi's career. And so, as time went on and The Evil Dead series began, Raimi brought Campbell in, and the rest is horror history.

Over at The Rumpus, Nick Rombes has revived his 10/40/70 blog posts, which provided the impetus and the idea for this series of analytical essays that take 3 random screengrabs from a chosen film and use them as a springboard to a discussion of pieces of the film (I usually choose films that are familiar, or which I’ve written about in a different way elsewhere). Nick reminded me how much I enjoyed writing these, so I thought I’d give it another go. The randomiser wants me to take frames from the 24th, 56th and 66th minutes of the film. That looks suspiciously like a pattern…..
This was another class assignment, Mixing two famous movies and making a cover for it. So this is Wizard of Oz and Army of Darkness, Concept basically being The characters of wizard of Oz in the hellish environment of Army of Darkness.
Ted Raimi: "Curtis RX and I are working on a new horror anthology web series that we're both writing and producing. It will be less in the vein of gory horror and more in that of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Curtis RX and I wanted something that was more classy and more attuned to what we were used to growing up, which was story-oriented tales of suspense, as opposed to raw horror and guts – which we both really love, I think, but which we wanted to see a little less of."RX, who appeared with Raimi at Wizard World Anaheim, commented, "It's less reliant on just creature effects or blood. Story first, that comes second. We're excited."
As for when we might see his next web series, Raimi said: "We don't know yet. I don't think there is a date at the moment. But we're trying to rush it as quickly as possible because we're both very excited about it."

Don’t miss Flathead Valley Community College Theatre’s production of the cult classic, “Evil Dead: The Musical,” a fantastic retelling of the original “Evil Dead” film combined with some of the more well-loved lines and characters from both sequel films, “Evil Dead II” and “Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness.”
The Shadow knows what lurks in the hearts of men, but what does "The Shadow" producer Michael Uslan know about plans for a new film to feature the pulp hero?Last month, rumors hit the 'Net that an upcoming "Shadow" film co-produced by Uslan and Sam Raimi (a well-known fan of the character) was being shopped around Hollywood to various studios. While most reports agreed that there was some uncertainty where the project would land, other reports indicated that former "Spider-Man" director Raimi (whose 1990 film "Darkman" was actually his take on The Shadow sans rights to the character) might not direct, and instead hand the reins over to "30 Days of Night" and "Twilight: Eclipse" director David Slade.
While Uslan said Raimi is very much still attached to the project and actively pushing it forward, he indicated that Slade's rumored connection to the film was nothing more than that at this point: a rumor."Don't necessarily believe everything you read on the Internet," he said.
While he declined to comment on whether Raimi would direct, Uslan said Raimi's attachment to The Shadow goes far beyond that of a normal director/character dynamic.
"The Shadow comics were the thing that propelled Sam into becoming a comic book fanatic," he said. "So to be aligned with him and [co-producer] Josh Donen on this project has been magical. Sam has a passion for it and an understanding of it."
