Exclusive: Bruce Campbell calls 'Evil Dead 4' rumors 'baloney'

Jarett Wieselman
writes:

Last night at the USA Characters Appreciated party I had the opportunity to chat with "Burn Notice" star Bruce Campbell -- a man I've idolized since first experiencing "Evil Dead" when I was 10 years old. Also known as too young to fully grasp how naughty that tree was actually being.

So naturally when I met the man, the myth, the legend, I had to ask about the status of "Evil Dead 4," a movie that's rumored to be in the works. Sadly for me -- and the rest of the world -- Bruce had some bad news.

"It's really all baloney at this point," Bruce told PopWrap exclusively. "We'd love to do it, but by the time we get around to writing it, Ash is gonna have to be in a walker!" Considering it's been almost 20 years since the actor stepped into Ash's boots, the jibe is understandable. But I can't be the only one who'd pay to see another Ash-venture, no matter his age!

Thankfully, Bruce wants fans to hold out hope. "Now that Sam [Raimi, director] isn't doing "Spider-Man 4" he is available. So if he gets call waiting, maybe I can get through!" Gosh, I'd think that if anyone had a direct line to Sam Raimi (via his own personal Bat-phone), it'd be Bruce!

Blizzard's Expectations For Sam Raimi's Warcraft Film? Just A Good Movie

With director Sam Raimi no longer involved with the next Spider-Man project, it's possible Warcraft

's feature-length adaptation could be moving forward a few years ahead of schedule. While those details are still being worked out behind-the-scenes in Hollywood, two Blizzard Entertainment executives couldn't help but speculate about what's in store for the Warcraft movie at DICE 2010.

You might be surprised at their expectations for the movie.

BRUCE CAMPBELL FTW

warmingglow.uproxx.com writes:

We Internet denizens have a lot of fun with Horatio Caine, the “CSI: Miami” investigator played by David Caruso. Anyone who’s ever seen Endless Caruso One-Liners has enjoyed the comedic alchemy that comes from Caruso’s hammy seriousness and Roger Daltrey’s scream.

And it seems that Hollywood is catching on to what’s cool on the Internet. In last night’s episode of “Burn Notice” — which, like Caruso’s “CSI,” takes place in Miami — Sam Axe (played by the legendary Bruce Campbell) awesomely pulled Horatio Caine’s “one-liner + sunglasses” move. And not to pooh-pooh Caruso’s style, but I don’t think there’s anyone in Hollywood who can handle a one-liner as well as Campbell. This might be the coolest thing he’s done since he since he had a chainsaw attached to his severed arm.

Exclusive Interview: Ted Raimi from Bean Curd God to the LEGEND OF THE SEEKER, You Gotta Love Him

Excerpts from this iesb.net interview:

On the Spiderman re-boot:
IESB: Since you were a part of the Spider-Man films, what do you think about the decision the studio made to re-boot the series with a different cast and director?

Ted: It feels exciting, actually. I suppose I'm a little bit disappointed that I won't get to go back and do Hoffman again, but I think Sony is going to do a great job re-booting the series and making it a younger, fresher cast. They get to re-imagine the whole thing and I think they'll do a fine job with it. They always do. I think Spider-Man is in good hands.

On Bruce Campbell and the My Name Is Bruce Sequel:
IESB: You and Bruce Campbell have known each other a long time, and he even babysat you, as a kid. What do you enjoy about working with him? Do you have plans or hopes to work together again soon?

Ted: It's great to work with Bruce. The problem with working with Bruce is that it's like ammonia and ether. It's two volatile substances. You really should be mixing ammonia with water, or something. We don't really check each other very well, in that regard. I go off to left field and wonder, "I don't think Bruce is going to stop me from going crazy here." In that sense, it can be a crazy experience. But, on the same level, Bruce is so creative on set that there's this infectious, manic, wildness that goes on while he's directing, and I personally love that vibe. That's something I always hope I will get with other directors, but seldom do.

IESB: Will you be involved with the My Name is Bruce sequel, Bruce Campbell vs. Frankenstein?

Ted: I can tell you that I will be in it, yes. But, as to what I'm doing in there, I'm not allowed to say because Dark Horse Comics will send their goons after me and kill me.

Sharp-eared TV fans have probably known this for a long time because NBC has been using the music for a while, but 'Lost' producer Carlton Cuse Twittered about it the other day to let everyone else know: a lot of the music that NBC is using on their Olympics coverage is the theme song to another show that Carlton co-created/produced back in the early 90s. Today is Ash Wednesday. Evil Dead Marathon Anyone?

Rafe Telsch writes:
For those who aren’t celebrating the real holiday of Ash Wednesday, we suggest you start your own celebration by watching one of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movies. My suggestion, as always, is go ahead and jump to the third picture, Army of Darkness. It’s self-contained and includes some of Ash’s best quips and moments. For those of you who are giving up something for Lent, you can use Ash’s sacrifices (his hand, various women, and - depending on which ending you watch - just about everything) to help inspire you with your own sacrifices. Not that we really need an excuse to watch Ash take on primitive screwheads with his boomstick, but the holiday name just begs for this new tradition.

Original EVIL DEAD to finally hit Blu-ray

Michael Gingold
writes:
First, a bit of a mea culpa: We discovered this news tidbit in an on-line article from Video Business a little while back, and have spent the time since trying to dig up more details. None were forthcoming, and since then the mag and its on-line incarnation have gone defunct, so the original posted item has been lost in cyberspace. But trust us: it was announced that THE EVIL DEAD will be making its hi-def disc debut later this year.

A source from Anchor Bay Entertainment, which has issued Sam Raimi’s classic gruefest in several DVD editions over the past decade, confirmed to the trade that the movie is on their Blu-ray slate for 2010. We haven’t been able to confirm which extras will be ported over from those previous discs, whether new ones will be created or if Raimi and co. are directly involved, but we’ll keep digging and bring you further info as we get it!

Mr. Media Interviews: Evil actor Ted Raimi is Playing Dead with Groundlings veteran Suzanne Keilly - February, 17th 2010 at 1:00 PM

Bob Andelman writes:
Actor Ted Raimi is director/producer for the new dark comedy web series, Playing Dead. He teams up once again with Groundlings alum Suzanne Keilly, who writes and stars in the 8-episode series at www.WatchPlayingDead.com.

Based on a short play written by Keilly, Playing Dead follows Grace, an out-of-work actress that lands a part-time job as Death. To pay the bills, Grace agrees to be the grim reaper’s little helper. Taking each assignment to escort someone to the other side proves to be harder than it looks and Grace suddenly finds herself breaking all the rules in order to get the job done.

Recognized by millions of fans for his roles in sci-fi and horror flicks, Raimi has starred in numerous film and television projects including USA Network’s “Xena Warrior Princess,” all three Spider-Man movies, Adam Sandler’s Reign Over Me, and the newly released Drag Me to Hell. Raimi also created the MTV show “Normal Joe” and directed the web series, “Rebooted.”

Coming up, Raimi will be once again behind the camera for a new internet horror anthology series he has created and he’s also putting the finishing touches on a feature script which will reunite him with long-time pal Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness).

Epic spoilers for Sam Raimi's 20,000 Leagues reboot

Now that Disney has pulled the plug on McG's proposed Captain Nemo movie, it looks like a competing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea project from Spider-Man's Sam Raimi has an open field.

It's not yet clear whether that film will move forward, but we're still intrigued by the idea of a Raimi version of Jules Verne's classic science fiction tale. Craig Titley wrote the screenplay for Raimi's Stars Road Entertainment. (Raimi is producing, not directing.)

SNL Asks What is Burn Notice?‎

Robert Seidman
writes:
Saturday Night Live attempts to take USA Networks highest-rated scripted drama down a peg or or a million in a game show skit titled “What is Burn Notice?” by suggesting that despite its high ratings on cable, nobody in the real world has any clue about the show.

It is interesting to see NBC picking on its sister cable network. Someone e-mailed me that NBC could have just as easily have done this with Mercy from its own network. But the premise of the skit is that here you have this hit show soon to enter its fourth season (things that can’t be said about Mercy) and most people have no idea what the show is.

Back in 1981, a group of friends thought they'd try their hand at making a horror film on a shoestring budget. Perhaps you've heard of them. Today, director Sam Raimi is best known as being the man behind the camera for Spider-Man, while star Bruce Campbell has leveraged his role to become arguably the greatest B-movie actor of all-time. Sure, you've watched it 40 or 50 times and are familiar with every bloody scene, but how well do you know The Evil Dead?

My Zombie Girlfriend and Finals

Zach S.
writes:
For my final project, I wanted to do a full face prosthetic appliance. I've shown the steps of life casting my girlfriend's face, and now is the moment to show what I learned and gained from my first round of schooling in special effects make-up. This would be the ultimate test of how far I could push myself to deliver a quality look, unassisted, in three hours.

I wanted to create a Zombie, but I also wanted to put my own spin on it. Something horrifying, but not yet repulsive. Like scary magic. I decided to draw inspiration from Michael Jackson's THRILLER and the cult film classic EVIL DEAD 2. I wanted to marry the sunken lifelessness of Michael with the over exaggerated horror of a Deadite. Using this as a template I embarked on many sculptings of how to make this happen.

We caught up with Ted at the recent premiere of Spartacus: Blood and Sand and managed to pull him aside for a few questions about his time on Xena, his genre-intensive acting career, and his reoccurring guest spot on Legend of the Seeker.

TTO: When you and Sam were kids out making your movies, did you really think you’d be able to do that kind of stuff as adults?

Ted Raimi: I can’t say for Sam, naturally, but I didn’t think these genre movies that I loved so much would ever be so popular. When I was a kid, this was only B-movies. This was only second-reels and stuff you see on TV. It never really reached the theaters in such massive amounts.

I think it’s a wonderful departure from movies in the 70s and 80s. We’ve gotten away from the harsh realities of the 70s, the goofiness of the 80s, the sort of blasé “removedness,” if that’s a word, of the 90s, and now we’re in sort of a fantasy play-world.

For me, this is sort of the golden age of movies and TV, and I’m very lucky to be living through it.

Evil Dead 2 Fan Commentary - Horroretc.com

As a kickoff to our extended Sam Raimi director's spotlight we sit down to revisit one of the all time great films of the genre. It's a pretty one-sided argument to say Evil Dead 2 is one of the most beloved horror flicks out there with a truly iconic performance by one Bruce Campbell so it's only fitting that an episode is devoted to discussing what makes this such a fun watch.

Despite our best efforts, things did end up coming down to reactions to the frenetic craziness happening on screen but we hope you take from the show some of our enjoyment of watching Ash and company continue the never-ending battle with those pesky Candarian demons - the deadites.
