It’s hard to believe that yet another Flashback Weekend is upon us once again, with the longest-running horror convention in Chicago set to take over the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare (5440 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018) from Friday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 4th. This year's festivities look to be a stellar time for genre fans, with a cavalcade of notable guests descending upon the three-day event. If you happened to miss our previous coverage of the various talent announcements for Flashback (you can check them out HERE), for this year’s convention, Bruce Campbell is returning to Chicago and will be reuniting with both Sam and Ted Raimi to celebrate all things Evil Dead.

Flashback Weekend will be playing host to a Night of the Creeps Reunion on Saturday evening with director Fred Dekker, co-stars Tom Atkins, Jason Lively, Jill Whitlow, Steve Marshall, Allan Kayser, Ken Heron, and Robert Kurtzman (who also worked on the film’s effects) in attendance. And for you Candyman fans out there, you’re not going to want to miss out on seeing both Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen, who will be appearing all weekend.

FBW will also be celebrating both A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master over the weekend with Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Lisa Wilcox, Tuesday Knight, Brooke Theiss, and Toy Newkirk in attendance. And for those of you Svengoolie fans out there, the legendary horror host is being feted on Friday night after 40 years of appearing on the small screen.

Horror Legend Bruce Campbell on Why Superhero Films Are Getting Boring

We at io9 are longtime fans of Bruce Campbell, so we were jazzed (and honestly quite starstruck) when we got an opportunity to sit down with him at San Diego Comic-Con to chat.

Campbell has worn lots of hats in the film industry, with credits that span acting, producing, directing, hosting, and even recording sound effects. He also hates an equal number of things in the film industry: money in Hollywood, heavy costumes, excessive green screening—and superheroes, apparently. (He may be the only executive producer I’ve ever met who seems to resent a large budget.)

During our time with the horror-staple, we discussed his new venture for the Travel Channel, a revival of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!—along with a bunch of other topics, including Evil Dead, the pitfalls of filmmaking, and why Batman v Superman was a terrible, no-good, very bad idea.

"Evil Dead" Descendant Bros Brett and Drew Pierce Bring "The Wretched"

The Flashback Weekend Horror Con is returning to Chicago this coming Aug. 2-4, 2019, at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare in Rosemont, IL.

The annual convention is presenting a huge line-up with major celebrity guests and several reunions with Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) toplining a “Ladies of Elm Street” reunion that includes Heather Langenkamp, Lisa Wilcox, Lisa Zane and more!

There will also be a Candyman reunion with Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen, where Todd will appear in costume with prosthetics created by FX legend Robert Kurtzman.

Bruce Campbell Gives Us a Tour of the New Ripley's Believe It or Not!

The king is back in the building, baby, and you won’t believe what Bruce Campbell is bringing to San Diego Comic-Con this year. Or will you?

The host and executive producer of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on Travel Channel said he first began making the rounds at cons around 1988 but didn’t land at SDCC until 15 or 20 years ago. Ever since, the man behind The Evil Dead’s Ash has reigned as con royalty, existing in a pantheon that includes the likes of Stan Lee and Kevin Smith (his 2005 panel/one-man show for Sky High is of special note in SDCC history).

Now, Bruce returns to support Ripley’s with a Saturday panel in the Indigo Ballroom (4 pm PT), with “Cyborg” Angel Giuffria, who possesses an advanced prosthesis; John “Hammerhead” Ferraro, who has a skull more than two times thicker than average; “Half-man” Short E. Dangerously; and Ripleys.com editor Sabrina Sieck. The Ripley’s event presence also includes autograph signing, a “Ripley’s Garaga” activation on the con floor (Booth 4015, complete with shrunken heads and the original Star Wars lightsaber), and the outdoor “Ripley’s Car Lot” in Petco Park (featuring Inflatable tube men, human car washes, and a pinball arcade).

While the first season of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! airs on Travel, Bruce joined us to discuss why the show is perfect for SDCC -- compared to “panels that suck” -- and how the sideshow element of the series is inspirational and cooler than the Smithsonian.

Sam Raimi Teases Return of ‘Evil Dead’ Film Franchise; “We’re Working on Ideas Right Now”

Fans of the Evil Dead franchise may soon have reason to rejoice! Fourteen months after the cancellation of the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Sam Raimi – who directed the original trilogy and produced the show – says early work has begun on a brand new movie.

In a new interview with Bloody-Disgusting, about the killer alligator movie Crawl (which Raimi produced), we asked the filmmaker what the future of the Evil Dead franchise was.

“I’d love to make another one. I don’t think TV is in its future but we’re talking about – Bruce [Campbell], Rob [Tapert] and myself – one or two different ways to go for the next movie,” Sam Raimi confirmed. He added:

“We’d like to make another Evil Dead feature and in fact we’re working on some ideas right now.”

The big question is whether the movie would follow the events of the Ash storyline, and once again star Bruce Campbell, or continue the storyline of the remake? Or would it be something entirely new? It turns out Raimi and company have one idea if Bruce Campbell comes back, one idea if Campbell opts out but Fede Álvarez – who directed the remake – is able to return, and another idea if both of those possibilities fall through!

“I would be thrilled if Bruce Campbell changed his mind about retirement, would come back for the original Evil Dead line,” Raimi said. “But if not, I’m very happy to work with, if Fede [Álvarez] would come back and make the sequel… but he’s such a big shot now. He’s so successful, an artist in demand, that I don’t think he’d want to do that.”

Speaking of Álvarez’s remake, we asked Raimi – once and for all – whether the events of that gory horror hit were canonical with the rest of the franchise.

“I think that’s a part of the Evil Dead universe but not part of the Bruce Campbell storyline,” Raimi explained.

When Bloody-Disgusting asked for clarification that the events of the “remake” were happening off in a corner of the original universe, Raimi replied: “Exactly.”

“But there’s also a third possibility we’re talking about,” Raimi added. The filmmaker did not elaborate further on what the third direction for the Evil Dead movie franchise could be, but he did leave us with a timeline.

“So I think you may see some action on the Evil Dead movie in the next six months,” Raimi concluded.

Good news for Deadites, and until the next update comes at least we have Crawl to tide us over! It swims into theaters this Friday!

Bruce Campbell Clarifies That Upcoming 'Evil Dead' Game Is For Consoles And PC, Not VR

In recent months, various rumors have been swirling around the web regarding the future of the Evil Dead franchise, but one thing we can officially confirm is that an Evil Dead video game 100% confirmed to be coming soon!

Last August, Bloody Disgusting broke the news during an interview with Campbell.

"They are doing a video game. A whole immersive kind of dealio," Campbell told the site. "I’ll be Ash for that, because I wouldn’t want someone else’s voice hamming it up."

Taking to Twitter today to clarify what has been said about the game, Campbell has now made it clear that this will not be a VR experience, but rather a game for consoles and PC!

Campbell tweeted, "Hey, groovy gamers, this is a swell time to clarify some incorrect info that might be out there (including from me!): the upcoming Evil Dead video game is being developed for consoles and PC, not VR. Sorry for any confusion. Game on!"

Bruce Campbell has lent his voice to a handful of video games over the years, including Evil Dead: Hail to the King, Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick and Evil Dead: Regeneration.
