Cheap Thrills: In Praise of The Evil Dead

On the envelope-pushing effects work of Sam Raimi’s hand-tooled gorefest, set for re-release this Halloween.

During his formative years, Sam Raimi spent much of his time making amateur Super-8 films with childhood friend Bruce Campbell. Raimi had just turned 20 when, in late 1979, shooting began on his feature debut, The Evil Dead. He and Campbell raised the budget themselves, begging friends, family and anyone who would listen, with only the $1,600 prototype short Within the Woods to establish the credibility of their intent.

The total outlay initially came in at $90,000, though it would eventually reach $350,000, accounting for post-production and marketing. What followed was, by all accounts, an arduous six-week shoot in and around an abandoned cabin during the Tennessee midwinter, with long hours, primitive facilities, multiple injuries, dwindling funds and frozen equipment that would have to be thawed at the derelict building’s fireplace.

The rest, as they say, is history. As well as bringing in a healthy return on investment ($29.4 million at the box office), The Evil Dead has variously been praised by Stephen King, vilified by Mary Whitehouse, cut to ribbons and banned in several countries (incredibly, until as recently as 2016 in Germany); it has become a home video best seller, spawned multiple sequels (both official and unofficial), a remake, a musical, a TV spinoff series, video games and comic book crossovers; it has secured lasting careers for Raimi and Campbell, and a permanent place for itself in popular culture. It is now frequently recognised as one of the all-time best entries in the horror canon.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead: Grotesque Franchise Of Utter Delight

Excerpt:

Set against a magnificently choreographed scary set, the comedy and horror in this rolling slapstick are both visceral. The show is nowhere serious, I repeat, nowhere. There are terrifying beasts on the loose, after of course a hilarious accident; yet, the aura is as relaxed as it could be. Undoubtedly, this single feature does not let the comedy drain out of an absolutely terrifying show.

New Jersey Horror Con & Film Festival 2018: Ash vs Evil Dead

This weekend, the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ, hosted the New Jersey Horror Con and Film Festival. Fans packed in to meet and greet their favorite celebrities, take photos, shop the vendor tables, and indulge in Q&A panels. The panel area opened up Friday night with a dynamic duo from Ash vs Evil Dead as stars Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly Maxwell) and Ted Raimi (Chet/Henrietta) took to the stage… or should I say took over the stage. Despite the series being cancelled by the STARZ network earlier this year, DeLorenzo had one of the most consistently packed lines at NJ Horror Con and there were plenty of Ash cosplayers. They gave the fans a hell of a fun time during their panel’s Q&A.

THE EVIL DEAD Returns To Cinemas This Halloween [New Trailer]

Sam Raimi's low budget classic returns to UK/ROI cinemas this October.

Sam Raimi launched his career with one of horror's greatest examples of low budget creativity, 1981's The Evil Dead. The film, which follows the exploits of a group of young holidaymakers who unleash hell while staying at a cabin in the woods, made a cult icon of actor Bruce Campbell and spawned two sequels, a remake and a TV show.

Once banned on UK video, The Evil Dead gets a big screen re-release this Halloween in UK/ROI cinemas courtesy of Park Circus. You can find details of participating cinemas here.

Check out the new re-release trailer below.

“Evil Dead: The Musical” celebrates 10 years in Michigan

For Garett Michael Harris, the role of Ash, the protagonist in “Evil Dead: The Musical,” is the most physically demanding he’s ever had.

“And it’s a pleasure to be doing it,” says the Royal Oak native.

It’s his first time playing Ash as the musical returns this week for a five-week run at Detroit’s City Theatre, but Harris has been involved since 2015.

“I played Scotty for three years. I had a lot of fun with the role,” Harris says. “But this year we were looking for a new Ash and I threw my name in the ring. (Director Jamie Warrow) didn’t think it was too awful an idea and said, ‘Let’s do this.’ I’m really happy to have this new role because I get to explore a completely different character.”

ART OF DARKNESS | An Interview with GRAHAM HUMPHREYS

Legendary poster artist GRAHAM HUMPHREYS talks horror, his long career, influences, the evils of Photoshop, and more!

Excerpt:

STARBURST: One of your most celebrated earliest works was the iconic UK theatrical poster for Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, a film which was soon to be dragged unfairly into the whole Video Nasty controversy. Do you think that the notoriety the film gained during this time helped or hindered your career?

Graham Humphreys: The Evil Dead got its UK distribution in 1983, two years before the Video Recordings Act came into law in September 1985. At the age of 23, two years seemed more like ten years at the time and I don’t recall any significant impact on my career during that period. This was for two main reasons, the first being that I was not particularly aware of most of the films that had become a target for the silly and hysterical tabloids, and thus oblivious to how their removal and savage editing might impact on choice or, indeed, the morality of an infantilised nation. Secondly, The Evil Dead had already been censored with a significant number of cuts for the theatrical, and therefore, simultaneous video, release. Mostly, these were simply to reduce the running time on particularly graphic scenes, although I think the eye gouging was almost entirely removed from the original version I’d been shown at a screening. So as far as I was aware, censorship was already in place for VHS. Of course I hadn’t really been introduced to the many European films and the rarely seen, contentious US art-house films that had begun to flood the shelves in the burgeoning VHS rental shops. As we know, many videos were pulled simply because of the titles themselves. It was enough that they sounded as if they might offend! My real introduction to, for instance, Argento and Fulci films came through Richard Stanley, whilst we storyboarded his first feature, Hardware. My film knowledge had been UK/US centric until that point, with the exception of televised European Cinema. If I had to identify any impact on my career, it will presumably have been positive. A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in the UK around the time of the Video Recordings Act coming into law. So if The Evil Dead gave me my first entry into horror marketing, Nightmare’ cemented my position within the genre. It’s important to add that the majority of my freelance work at the time did not fit into the genre category. In order to earn a living I was working on a whole raft of other illustration commissions, completely non-horror related. It’s only in the last ten years that I’ve been working almost exclusively in the genre.

Unrated Version of the ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Finally Coming to U.S. Blu-ray in October!

John Squires writes:

Back in October of 2016, you may recall, the extended “Unrated” version of Fede Alvarez’s insanely gruesome remake of Evil Dead got a digital release, home to five minutes of footage that was not included in the film’s theatrical release. Oddly, the “Unrated” version was *only* made available digitally, with no home video release in sight at that time.

Two years later, it looks like it’s finally on the way! According to an Amazon listing, Sony will re-release Evil Dead on Blu-ray on October 23, including the theatrical & Unrated versions!

DISC 1: Unrated Version
DISC 2: R-Rated Version:
  • Audio Commentary
  • Making Life Difficult Featurette
  • Directing The Dead Featurette
  • Being Mia Featurette
  • Unleashing the Evil Force Featurette

So what can you expect from the “Unrated Edition” of the Evil Dead remake? Fans who are hungry for way more of the 2013 gore-fest will be happy to hear that it includes just under FIVE MINUTES of footage not seen in the theatrical/home video version, including scenes that were in the trailer but strangely absent from the film itself. As outlined by Movie Censorship (be sure to head over there for literally everything you need to know about this cut), the newly-branded “Unrated Edition” has both additional plot scenes and more violence.

The site notes 27 major and minor differences between the “Unrated Edition” and the theatrical cut, and the additional gore scenes include extended shots of Mia’s tongue slice and Natalie’s self-inflicted arm removal; two of the more gruesome sequences in the film. Perhaps most notably, the scene of David chopping up Natalie’s body with a chainsaw has been restored, which was glimpsed in the trailer but eventually cut by Alvarez.

Additionally, the new version includes a brand new scene during the end credits, which sees Mia being picked up on the side of the road by a kind stranger; contrary to internet rumors when the film was released, the old man in this scene is not played by Bruce Campbell.

More action. More gore. This version is a MUST own.

Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell thinks a younger actor should take over role of Ash

Last April, Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell announced that he had retired from playing the Deadite-battling Ash Williams following Starz’s cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead. So, does that mean the end of the franchise? Not if Campbell has his way.

Speaking to EW earlier this week, the actor revealed that he would like to see a more youthful thespian take over his signature role.

“I’d be perfectly fine if they find some young Ash, do some new incarnation, let some other poor bastard get covered in blood,” said Campbell. “It’s all good.”

Campbell also suggested the possibility of combining characters from Ash vs. Evil with those featured in the 2013 Evil Dead remake.

“I hope there are very many variations of Evil Dead,” he said. “You’ve got the leftover characters from the series, you’ve got the characters from the remake that we did a few years ago. You can intersect universes.”

Bruce Campbell says ‘Evil Dead’ franchise is dead to him

Bruce Campbell is best known as Ash, the wisecracking, chain-saw-wielding demon hunter in the phantasmagoric “Evil Dead” movies and the Starz spin-off TV series “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which just ended its run after three seasons earlier this year.

It’s the role that turned the actor into a cult icon — a man who went on to pen three best-sellers and co-star in such series as “Xena: Warrior Princess,” “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” and “Burn Notice” — and no doubt will be the subject of many of the questions put to him at the Fandemic pop-culture convention at NRG Center this weekend. But it’s a character he won’t be playing ever again.
