‘Evil Dead: The Game’ Teases Upcoming “Ash vs. Evil Dead” DLC Update

The game’s official account tweeted, “We’ve been hiding something in the cellar, and it’s not Henrietta.”
No other information has been provided as of yet, but the quick clip gives just enough of a peek at the faceless characters to piece together what we might expect when the DLC arrives. And it appears to be centered around “Ash vs. Evil Dead.“
The brief tease indicates we might look forward to new skins for playable survivor characters Ash Williams in Ashy Slashy asylum mode (pictured above), Amanda Fisher, and Pablo Simon Bolivar. The remaining two figures bear an uncanny resemblance to Ash’s dad Brock Williams (played by Lee Majors) and season two villain Baal (played by Joel Tobeck).

‘Evil Dead Rise’ Filmmaker Lee Cronin Tackling Horror Thriller ‘Thaw’ for New Line

Lee Cronin, director of New Line’s upcoming Evil Dead Rise, is reuniting with the studio to direct the original horror feature Thaw

Cronin, who is riding high from Rise’s rapturous reception at this year’s SXSW, will also rewrite the current draft.

Van Toffler and David Gale of Gunpowder & Sky, as well as Adam Goldworm of Aperture, who produced the well-regarded drama My Friend Dahmer and has Final Girl Support Group set up at HBO, are producing.

Set years after the polar ice caps have melted and sea levels have risen, the story of Thaw centers on a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. Their prayers are answered with the discovery of an inhabitable town, that is, until they encounter a new nightmare living just below the water’s surface.

Evil Dead Rise's Demonic Wall-Crawling Was A Real, Practical Stunt

Alyssa Sutherland confirms "Evil Dead Rise" director Lee Cronin also relied on practical techniques. Talking about a scene in which her character (a mom-turned-Deadite) crawls along a wall, Sutherland explains that stunt doubles replaced post-production digital FX:

"That was an incredible stunt double. They wouldn't let me [do it]. I wanted to try to do that. But I think they were basically like, 'We don't have the time for you to learn this.' I really wanted to give it a go. The producers were like, 'No, your stunt double's going to do this one because... we don't have the time. She's already got this one nailed."

Why Evil Dead Rise Took The Franchise Out Of The Woods And Into The City

Lee Cronin:

"I kind of knew instinctively that if I came back with a cabin in the woods take, it was just going to be more of the same. It was going to be like, 'How do we mash this up? How do we double down on what's already been doubled down on?' So instinctively I felt like I needed to take it to an urban context ... I felt the city, the urban jungle, was the polar opposite to what we've seen before. So if you're going to make a change, you really got to make a change, in a way."

Writer/Director Lee Cronin Talks EVIL DEAD RISE Gore Quotient And The DEMONS 2 Question

Some online fans, when the trailer dropped and revealed the apartment-building setting, were comparing Evil Dead Rise to Demons 2. Have you seen that film, and was that ever part of your thinking?
Lee Cronin: I’m really glad you asked this question because I have to admit I’ve never seen Demons 2—and I know that’s an easy answer. I know of it, but I actually haven’t seen the film—and I want to remedy that! It’s definitely on my watch list. But it’s not something I had seen when I was approaching this movie.

Bruce Campbell Tells ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Heckler to ‘Get the F— Out’ of Rowdy SXSW Premiere

After sitting through an hour and a half-long movie and 10 minutes of a post-screening Q&A, one spectator at the world premiere of “Evil Dead Rise” decided he had finally had enough.

The man was approached by South by Southwest venue staff after falling asleep with his legs propped up and yelled something unintelligible in response. When the room went silent to hear him out, he shouted, “This movie fucking sucks!” and threw an empty bucket of popcorn into the air.

The audience immediately erupted into a chorus of boos. As the heckler stormed out of his balcony seat, they quieted, offering scattered applause — until original “Evil Dead” star and current executive producer Bruce Campbell got involved.

“What are you doing here? Get the fuck out of here!” he said, inciting raucous cheers that almost rivaled the crowd’s reaction to the film itself. Added producer Rob Tapert, “I don’t get it. He waited all the way through the credits!” to wide laughter.

Bruce Campbell Says He’d Star In Another EVIL DEAD Movie—On One Condition

Bruce Campbell: If Sam says, ‘I, Sam Raimi, will direct another Evil Dead movie,’ then I, Bruce Campbell, will consider being in it. I don’t want to be Ash, tended to by other people. Sam’s the meanest director I’ve ever worked with, and Ash needs a little bit of that to shine. And I think Sam’s the only director now who I won’t punch in the face making an Evil Dead movie! I’m just saying, I’ve called Rob and Sam out, I’m not the coward that they think I am; I just want the right circumstances. Because Sam, even though he’s done studio movies, he’s still a good director! [Raimi laughs] So, I want Sam! I’ll do it for Sam.”

Raimi is particularly up for doing something that reunites him with Campbell and producer Rob Tapert, who has been involved in the Evil Dead series since the very start. “I love working with Bruce and Rob,” Raimi says. “I love it as a producer because they’re really good partners, but I also like being supported by them as the director. Evil Dead Rise Is a Horror Gorefest That Will “Punch You in the Face”

“Make sure there’s scary Deadites, and use the book.”

When Lee Cronin assumed writing/directing duties for Evil Dead Rise, those were Sam Raimi's requests. Of course, there were other ingredients for the fifth installment of The Evil Dead horror franchise—launched in 1981 by director Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell —such as blood, gore, chainsaws, and boomsticks.

But then the Irish filmmaker and lifelong Evil Dead reveals to us he had his own mission: “To bring you in, wind you up, and then punch you in the face for an hour.”

Interview: Bruce Campbell Talks ‘Evil Dead Rise’ and Potential Animated Ash Williams Return

Excerpt regarding Evil Dead Rise:

Lee Cronin did a really bang-up job. You can expect to be very disturbed. It’s when mommies go bad. We dragged it out of the woods. We’re in an urban environment, which gives it a really gnarly feel. I think people are in for trouble. I feel sorry for audiences in advance!”

Campbell compares Evil Dead Rise‘s tone to that of Fede Álvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead reboot. “Both filmmakers are equally capable individuals, so they both really just spanked it. It’s not a yuk-fest. It’s not hardy-har-har. It’s not Ash shooting finger guns. This is real shit going down. These guys took it real seriously. Lee Cronin is Irish, and he brings kind of a European feel to this thing.”

He also praises the special effects work in the upcoming film. “No one will ever be able to make fun of the Evil Dead special effects ever again as long as I’m alive. They used to love to do that; cheese-ball effects, garden hoses spewing stuff. Well, you know what? Eat it, bitches, because this is good stuff you’re about to see!”

Excerpt regarding a potential animated Ash Williams return:

While Campbell has officially retired his iconic Ash Williams character on screen, an animated Evil Dead continuation series is still in the early stages of development. “All I can say is we’re actively pursuing it. Sam’s a busy guy. He had a big hit movie, so he’s got a lot on his plate, but he and his brother are actively shaping out the world. It’s one thing to get an animator and say, ‘Hey, animate this!’ You’ve got to know what you’re going to animate. I look forward to it, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.”
