Jungian therapist Sarah Berry-Tschinkel offers one-woman play at Charleston’s Gage Hall

These days, Sarah Berry-Tschinkel has a thriving psychoanalysis practice in which she applies her Jungian training to explore the instincts, shadow selves and cognitive functions of her patients.

Are they thinking or feeling people? Intuitive or sensate? And what attitude comes naturally to them? Are they internally or externally focused? Judging or perceiving?

But Berry-Tschinkel hasn’t exactly given up her theatrical life.

She performs a one-woman show about Sabina Spielrein, a fascinating patient of Carl Jung who helped the famous psychoanalyst refine his theories and went on to become an influential therapist in her own right, introducing Jung’s concepts (and some of her own) to Russia.

Berry-Tschinkel will present “Sabina Spielrein: Her Extraordinary Destiny” at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Gage Hall, 4 Archdale St. The event is sponsored by the Charleston Jung Society. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, available at the door.

The South Carolina native grew up in Moncks Corner and maintains ties to the Lowcountry. As a young woman, she trained at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts beginning in 1979, thanks to a scholarship, and found a number of roles in experimental theater productions in New York City.

After NYU, she studied with William Esper, a protege of Sanford Meisner, wrote her own material and joined traveling street performances downtown.

“We would stage scenes on loading docks throughout SoHo,” she recalled. “The audience would travel, follow us around.”

Naturally, she made no money doing this.

In 1983, she moved into a SoHo building and met one of her neighbors, Paul Tschinkel, the video artist and documentarian. Soon they were a couple.

Berry-Tschinkel decided she’d attempt a more traditional approach to acting. She got some soap opera work, some movie work. She made the cult horror film “Evil Dead 2” with director Sam Raimi in 1986. Then the Tschinkels moved to Los Angeles, where the writer’s strike was in full swing and there was no work to get.

Bad timing.

And L.A. really was not their style. They lasted there only a year.

“We returned to New York City,” she said. “By that time, we had kids and I decided I didn’t want to act anymore, so I went to Smith College and got a graduate degree in psychology and social work, then went into private practice.”

'DOOM Eternal' Game Director on Drawing Inspiration From Classic Horror: "I Think This Is Our 'Evil Dead 2'"

Hosted by video game veteran Hugo Martin, the first three hours of gameplay were offered Friday at a media-only demonstration for the first-person shooter title. 

"You are feared by the worst evil in the world: Hell. All of hell fears you."

Those words were uttered by DOOM Eternal game director Hugo Martin, who describes the demon slayer in the upcoming first-person shooter game as an "uncompromising" character. "That's what makes him so appealing," he tells The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, midway through a media-only demonstration of the game by publisher Bethesda Softworks. "I think we would all aspire to be so uncompromising and direct; he's not rude, but he doesn't have to be polite."

Martin, who played classic games like Freeway and Kaboom! as a kid, before moving onto Goldeneye in college, studied automotive design early in his career and worked in advertising, film and animation prior to dedicating himself to games.

He describes himself as a "big film buff" in addition to the more predictable label of "hardcore gamer," telling THR that he drew inspiration for DOOM Eternal from the charm of 1987's Evil Dead 2. "That was a big touchstone for us, when you look at something like that, there’s the perfect balance between gore and slapstick humor. It’s not really taking itself too seriously."

Noting that the Evil Dead franchise became what it is with its second installment, Martin declares, "I think this our Evil Dead 2."

Join Jefferson Exchange host Geoffrey Riley and Chelsea Rose from SOU's Anthropology Lab at The Stardust Lounge at Ashland Hills Inn & Suites for our next Underground History Live. It happens Monday, February 3 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

Geoffrey and Chelsea will discuss the entertainment industry's portrayal of history, and sometimes pre-history, with Bruce Campbell, who will draw on his 40-year career acting and directing in films and television series.

Sam Raimi Addresses the Future of the ‘Evil Dead’ Film Franchise During Reddit Chat

As he revealed to us this past summer, Sam Raimi and company are working on a brand new installment in the Evil Dead film franchise, with Bruce Campbell noting in October that Raimi has hand-picked a “new filmmaker” to take over directing duties. All we can really be sure of at this time is that the film won’t star Campbell as Ash, as he has retired the character.

That’s what Campbell has been insisting, at least. But it seems like Raimi is still holding out hope. During an Ask-Me-Anything chat on Reddit tonight in promotion of The Grudge, Raimi addressed the future of the franchise. “Bruce, Rob [Tapert] and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct,” he again noted.

Raimi continued, “As for me…. I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie… but I’d really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he’s retired the character. I hope not.”

Innnteresting. What about a sequel to Fede Alvarez‘s remake, you ask? It sounds like that’s still on the table too. “If Fede would write or direct it, yes, in a split second!” Raimi responded to a fan who asked whether or not the 2013 film would ever be getting a sequel.

So it sounds like the Evil Dead team is open to pretty much anything at this point, but what’s important here is that a new film is most definitely in the works right now. And it sounds like it’s not a sequel to Alvarez’s remake, but rather a brand new Evil Dead story.
