Anchor Bay cult-film champion Jay Douglas dead at age 65

From www.syfy.com:

Jay Douglas passed away on Tuesday after suffering from a heart attack in Green Valley, Arizona, according to Deadline. While Douglas might not have been a household name, he became one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of cult films starting back in 1995.

That was the year he joined Anchor Bay Entertainment, where he spent the next 10 years defining the company's collection of obscure genre films, long-forgotten classics, and some of the most infamous horror movies ever made. Anchor Bay became renowned in genre circles for their meticulous treatment of such cinematic oddities, particularly in a pre-streaming era where movies like that weren't always easy to come by.

"Our goal is to elevate these old films and B movies — if that’s what you call them," Douglas told the New York Times back in 1998.

In many ways, it was because of Douglas' work that some of our favorites found a second life in home video — horror classics like Dawn of the Dead and The Hills Have Eyes, outsider oddities such as Repo Man, and vintage superhero epics like 1984's Supergirl. In some cases, his work helped resurrect entire careers.

"Jay and Anchor Bay were instrumental in rekindling interest in the Evil Dead movies,” Bruce Campbell told Deadline earlier today, as Anchor Bay's acquisition of the Evil Dead franchise gave the actor's career a second wind. "For that, my partners and I will always be grateful. He was fun and smart and really a special guy."

Evil Dead I & II and The Fly II SFX Interview & Props w/ Tom Sullivan

Info:
Special thanks to special effects coordinator, Tom Sullivan, who gave two high school students an incredible opportunity to hone our interviewing skills for a class project. We had never done anything like that before and he couldn't have been more generous and patient with us while we learned the ropes.

Tom goes into depth on how the effects for the first two Evil Dead films were created and showcases many of the props that he created.

Produced as "In the Spotlight Scene 2" for WHBS in 1989.

[Blu-ray Review] Ted Raimi Skins Streetwalkers in the Sleazy Fun ‘Skinner’

Ted Raimi is a beloved member of the genre community and for good reason. Along with his brother, Sam, he helped play a pivotal role in bringing to life one of the most iconic horror heroes of all time. In addition to that, he’s spent the last 40 years or so playing a number of popular supporting characters, most notably Joxer on Xena: Warrior Princess. In between all those great supporting roles, Ted has occasionally taken his quirky style to the forefront as a leading man, which is exactly what he did in 1993 in director Ivan Nagy’s Skinner.

Official Announcement and Full Details: Evil Dead 2 Escape Room Game coming to Seattle

From the official press release:

Hourglass Escapes, LLC is proud to announce the summer 2019 opening of:

The original Evil Dead 2: DEAD BY DAWN™ Escape Room

It's your chance to escape the evil dead before they swallow your soul in the first officially licensed escape room, granted by Studiocanal S.A.S., based on Sam Raimi’s classic horror/comedy Evil Dead 2: DEAD BY DAWN™.

Hourglass Escapes, LLC creates challenging and fun escape rooms known for superior production values and immersive storylines. Their games (including Rise of the Mad Pharaoh and The Ghostly Galleon) are top-rated on Yelp and Tripadvisor, with Rise named as one of the top three escape rooms in Seattle by EscapeRoomsTips.com.

Before co-founding Hourglass Escapes, creative Director Seth Wolfson was a scenic animatronic artist at Universal Studios Orlando and sculpted/designed wax figures for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. Now he and his impassioned team of film and game veterans will unleash their creativity on the cult classic that the Chicago Tribune called “the kind of shock that lies between a laugh and a scream.”

When players enter that all-too-familiar cabin in the woods, they will have until dawn (or sixty minutes, whichever comes first) to find the Kandarian dagger and destroy the book of the dead before the evil dead swallows their souls. Fans of the classic film can expect deadites, chainsaws, a very strange deer head, a chained-up cellar door, and plenty of horrifying surprises, including a cameo by Twin Peaks star Andrea Hays.

“Every part of the design phase we stop and ask if this fits into the Evil Dead 2™ universe,” said Wolfson. “We want this to be a great Evil Dead 2™ experience and a well-respected escape room on its own merit.”

Wolfson is joined by set and prop designer Regan MacStravic (Captain Fantastic, Safety Not Guaranteed), makeup FX artist Tim Peirson (Z Nation), video designer Ben Rock (production designer and creator of the infamous stickman for The Blair Witch Project), and veteran escape room composer David Chesnut.

“It’s an honor to be the first team ever entrusted with creating an escape room out of my all-time favorite horror film,” said Wolfson. “It’s a dream come true.“

The original Evil Dead 2: DEAD BY DAWN™ Escape Room opens in July 2019 and will be a scary and fun experience appropriate for ages 13 and up. For design photos and production updates, go to:
