Exclusive: Bruce Campbell Talks ASH VS EVIL DEAD Season 2 & Upcoming Book HAIL TO THE CHIN

Jonathan James writes:

Bruce Campbell returns as Ash this Sunday in the premiere of Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 on STARZ, and he couldn't be more excited for fans to check it out. Having seen the first two episodes, I can tell Daily Dead readers that the series continues to deliver great character moments and over-the-top horror at the breakneck pace we saw in season 1. We get to learn more about the time between Army of Darkness and Ash vs Evil Dead when Ash goes back home, we're introduced to brand new characters (including Ash's father), and the second episode has Ash in his most outrageous battle to date (and that's saying a lot...).

While he was out at Fantastic Fest, I had a chance to catch up with Bruce Campbell to discuss all things Ash vs Evil Dead. Continue reading to learn about exploring Ash's past, working with Lee Majors, interest in future seasons, and a book sequel to If Chins Could Kill:

Bruce Campbell Still Hates Being Sprayed With Blood, 37 Years Later

Bruce Campbell is a unique kind of movie star. He’s most famous for playing a single, unique character: Ash from the Evil Dead franchise, and he’s portrayed him for over thirty years. His roles frequently poke fun at the persona the world thinks he maintains, and like countless celebrities, Campbell has written autobiographical books about his experience with cult fame. He’s amassed a huge following of gorehounds, inspired at least partially by his distinctive, self-aware swagger. That’s why he stands alone as the Leading Man of Horror-Comedy. In short, there’s just no one else in the world like Bruce Campbell.

Fantastic Fest 2016 Interview: Dana DeLorenzo on Teaming Up with Lucy Lawless & Still Being Starstruck by Her ASH VS EVIL DEAD Co-Stars

Heather Wixson writes:

If you ever get the opportunity to hear actress Dana DeLorenzo speak about anything related to her experiences on Ash vs Evil Dead, her pure joy and graciousness—as well as her infectious enthusiasm—are evident from the very first syllable out of her mouth. I’ve been fortunate to speak with her on several occasions now, but this most recent interview at the 2016 Fantastic Fest might be my all-time favorite chat with her.

From uproxx.com:

An instantly recognizable actor on big and small screens for more than 50 years, Lee Majors has joined the cast of Ash vs. Evil Dead for its blood-splattered second season. While in attendance at this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas to promote the Starz network’s flagship series, we got the chance to talk to him about everything from starting his career in horror, working with Bruce Campbell, and how binge-watching the first season convinced him that he needed to be a part of it.

Bruce Campbell Talks ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ Season 2 and the Joys of Splatstick | Playboy

If you read any interview with legendary B-movie actor Bruce Campbell between 1993 and 2014, the chances are extremely high that you’ll find exchanges about the nonexistent Evil Dead 4. For over two decades, both he and franchise writer-director Sam Raimi were plagued with that undying question. That’s what happens when you’re the star of one of the greatest cult horror sagas of all time.

Since 1992’s Army of Darkness, the third and final film of the series, the franchise had a very lucrative life in the home-video arena, making a killing with countless editions in VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. It even spawned various lines of action figures and a variety of merchandise: keychains, apparel, posters, lunch pails, shot glasses—you name it. And the fans eat it up. So it was a matter of time until someone saw potential for a comeback.

In 2013, Campbell co-produced an Evil Dead remake directed by Fede Alvarez. While it wasn’t exactly what the fans had been clamoring for, it was still well received by critics. Then out of left field came the announcement that Raimi and Campbell were teaming up with Starz to brings us Ash vs Evil Dead, a 10-episode series where Campbell would once again don his signature chainsaw-hand, take up his shotgun (aka “boomstick”) and reprise his indelible role—Ash Williams. Forget a 90-minute movie. Fans were now getting five full hours that followed the events of the films. The series premiered in October 2015 to enormous praise.

Now Ash vs Evil Dead is back with its second season, ready to deliver another splatterfest beginning October 2. Here, Campbell tells us how this new season ups the ante, what Easter eggs we can expect and how Sam Raimi still manages to torment him on set from afar.

Q&A: Actress Dana DeLorenzo Talks Kelly and ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’

From modernhorrors.com:

Last season on Ash vs Evil Dead, Dana DeLorenzo’s Kelly was put through the ringer. First she had to watch her dead mother stick a fork in her father’s eye, then she had to contend with being possessed by lesser demon Eligos, before finally being spit out of a cabin by way of blood. As the brains of the Ghostbeaters, Kelly has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. As is her real life counterpart, Dana.

We sat down with Dana ahead of the second season premiere to discuss what it was like to play possessed, how much she loves her job and the fans, and what’s ahead for Kelly. Be prepared for some major teases:

‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ cast comes to EL to talk about season 2 premiere

'Ash vs. Evil Dead' cast members Ted Raimi, Dana DeLorenzo, and Ray Santiago with guest host Scott Westerman. They'll join actors Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless at Wells Hall for a screening tonight at 11:15 p.m.

Cast members from the Starz horror comedy “Ash vs. Evil Dead” are hosting a Season 2 advanced screening and panel discussion tonight on MSU’s campus. Actors Ray Santiago, Ted Raimi and Dana DeLorenzo and talk about why Michigan plays such an important role in the new season.

If you like horror films, you definitely know all about the classic “Evil Dead" trilogy starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. And if you’re a big fan of those films, then you were pretty excited when almost 25 years later, the story picked back up again with the Starz show "Ash vs. Evil Dead."

Season 2 of the show premieres this weekend, and Michigan plays an interesting role in the story, probably because the creator of the films, Sam Raimi, attended MSU, and so did his brothers Ted, who stars in season 2, and Ivan, who is executive producer.

Current State talks with cast members Ted Raimi, Dana DeLorenzo, and Ray Santiago ahead of a panel discussion and free screening tonight at MSU's Wells Hall.

Ash vs Evil Dead, M. Night Shyamalan, and Nerd Rap Battles at Fantastic Fest

Fantastic Fest is heralded as one of the best events of the year for discovering new material. That said, the Austin phenomenon is hardly opposed to lending the spotlight to something a little more familiar, such as a beloved film franchise or established television show, especially the kind befitting of the festival’s penchant for the strange and sinister. You can bet that the likes of the Phantasm movie series and Starz’s original program Ash vs. Evil Dead pass muster in this category, and both took a trip down to Austin, Texas to bring their forthcoming installments to Fantastic Fest ’16.

On her fourth day surveying the festival grounds, our own Clarke Wolfe chatted with Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli about the legacy of his cinematic realm, which he has trusted with David Hartman, director of the series’ fifth feature, Phantasm: Ravager. While Coscarelli suggests that the story ends with chapter five, fans have clearly not had their fill of otherworldly undertakers and dwarf zombies.

Clarke also crossed paths with genre kingpin Bruce Campbell, whose Ash vs. Evil Dead graced Fantastic Fest with footage from its upcoming second season. Bruce and his new screen father, Hollywood legend Lee Majors, offered a few small insights into what to expect from season two, which premieres on Starz on Oct. 2. We’re still largely in the dark, but prepare for a morgue scene and heavy catchphrasing.

‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ Season 2: Bruce Campbell, Lucy Lawless on How Continuity Is for Wimps

The much-loved Starz horror-comedy series Ash vs. Evil Dead is back for Season 2, with Ash (Bruce Campbell) leaving Jacksonville and returning to his hometown of Elk Grove, Michigan. Although things with Ruby (Lucy Lawless) are shaky, at best, the former enemies, along with Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) must form an uneasy alliance, if they’re going to survive the growing evil.

During a press conference, Bruce Campbell, Lucy Lawless and executive producer Rob Tapert talked about their fear of not living up to fan expectations, how much Sam Raimi is still able to be involved, the pressure to outdo the first season in the second season, why they think the show has gotten better in its storytelling, the incredible casting decision to bring on Lee Majors as Ash’s father, why Ash is not a good role model, how continuity is for wimps, and taking things to a whole new grotesque level.

Q&A: Lee Majors loves life as 'Evil Dead' dad

The creators of Ash vs. Evil Dead wait all of 34 seconds after new guest star Lee Majors appears before the inevitable Six Million Dollar Man references start flying.

Besides the Bigfoot jokes and a "better, stronger, faster" riff, Majors promises “a bloody good time” in the second-season premiere of the Starz horror comedy (Sunday, 8 ET/PT). The opener introduces Majors as Brock Williams, dad to Bruce Campbell’s Evil Dead mainstay Ash, who returns to his Michigan hometown to again stave off a horrific Deadite apocalypse.

Brock is definitely a naughty old departure from Majors’ most famous roles, 1970s bionic good guy Steve Austin on ABC's Six Million Dollar Man and ‘80s heroic stuntman Colt Seaver on The Fall Guy. “I got to say some bad words, which I’ve never done,” says the 77-year-old Kentucky native.

Majors was too busy doing family action dramas back then — his first role was in the 1964 movie Strait-Jacket, and Joan Crawford “chopped my head off with an ax before the credits came on.” But between his new gig and the upcoming video-game adaptation Dead Rising, “I’m into dead stuff now.”

“Mercy for Pablo.” – ASH VS. EVIL DEAD’s Ray Santiago

Excerpt:

As one of the most prominent characters in the series, Ray Santiago’s “Pablo” has undergone quite an arc from start to finish. Having wrapped the first episode of season two (provided by the good folks at STARZ), the intensity is going to double down this season. That chaotic gorgasmic pace is still there. I can’t even begin to fathom the thought on how much more malicious Ruby will be, as well as looking forward to Pablo utilizing his supernatural abilities with more pizzazz. Quite frankly, from what I saw, it doesn’t seem to have lost a beat. It’s still as disgustingly delicious as last season.

EW: Ash vs Evil Dead: Take a tour of the Airstream trailer — exclusive video

Think the Airstream trailer belonging to Bruce Campbell’s character in Starz’s horror-comedy show Ash vs Evil Dead looks like a disgusting craphole? Then your opinion is unlikely to be changed by a just-released, Cribs-style video, which offers a tour of the trailer’s sights (though, happily, not its smells).

The clip is hosted by Ray Santiago’s character Pablo, who helpfully guides us through the trailer’s areas of interest, including what looks like a pile of bowels on the floor and the master bedroom, “where Kelly tried to seduce me, and shoot me in the face with a shotgun, after smoking a joint while she was possessed.”

Oh, those crazy kids!

A hometowner from Hamtramck fights the undead

From www.metrotimes.com:

Earlier this month, we got the chance to talk to Ted Raimi. You may be more familiar his older brother Sam, director of such blockbusters as Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3, which altogether grossed more than $1 billion at the box office. Ted’s career has often aligned with Sam’s projects: He has played bit parts in cult classics like Crimewave, and portrayed the evil deadite Henrietta in Evil Dead 2, and fell into a number of hacker roles in the 1990s before playing the nebbish warrior wannabe Joxer in Xena: Warrior Princess.

As if that weren’t enough to hit us right in our cult movie-loving gut, Ted, like the rest of the Raimi brothers, is also a native Detroiter. He lives in the Los Angeles area, but is still a Tigers fan who misses “the dynamism of Detroit.” He jokes, “You have to be a glass-is-half-full guy in Detroit. Detroiters don’t really know glass-is-half-empty guys, that is because those guys died a long time ago, either by depression or they actually got killed. But you have to be a glass is half full guy, you have to be positive and seek positivity. There is no other way to survive, and I think that mentality translates well into acting.”

In a few weeks, he also will appear in season two of the popular Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, which he’s eager to promote. But we thought it was neat that he asked his publicist to pitch us that story specifically. Ted tells us he grew up reading Metro Times, and says, “I always hoped that one day I would get into the Metro Times.”

We’re delighted to oblige.

Talking about the ‘Evil Dead’

WADESBORO — Three filmmakers trekked deep into the woods south of Lilesville last week in search of the location for something that took place 30 years ago.

They found what they were looking for: an old cabin, mostly collapsed.

This isn’t a sequel to “The Blair Witch Project.”

Rather, it’s a documentary highlighting the locations of the first two films in the “Evil Dead” franchise.

“Surreal,” Matthew Powell said about being at the cabin site while waiting in the Ansonia Theatre on Friday for local residents to share their memories of the production of “Evil Dead II.” “That’s my favorite movie ever, so being on the place they filmed it was like holy land for me.”

Powell is the director of “Evil Dead Uproot,” a film which started off as a short documentary about Mike Pasquale’s restoration of the woodshed from the movie, but has since expanded in scope.

Bruce Campbell on Ash Vs Evil Dead's "crazy-ass journey" and Season 2

From www.scifinow.co.uk:

As obsessive fans of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movies, we were a little apprehensive about Ash Vs Evil Dead. An Evil Dead TV show? Would that work? The answers to those two questions were “Yes!” and “Also yes,” as the team behind the blood-drenched horror comedy classics reunited for a gore-soaked, funny and faithful follow-up that found Ash in trouble again decades later.

With the help of new sidekicks Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) and Pablo (Ray Santiago), Ash had to set out to send the Deadites back to where they came from with the help of the Necromonicon…Obviously, Ash being Ash, things did not go smoothly. The show was a huge success and the second season is just around the corner, unleashing a brilliant red-band trailer at Comic-Con. To celebrate the first season’s DVD release in the UK, we got some time with Campbell to talk blood, guts, Oldsmobiles, stunts, and what we can look forward to in Season 2.

Unrated Extended Cut of Evil Dead Remake Coming in October!

From dreadcentral.com:

Now this… this is super cool! During an interview with Altapeli regarding his new film Don’t Breathe, director Fede Alvarez let the cat out of the bag that an extended cut of his Evil Dead remake will be hitting Blu-ray in October.

I’ll give you the news exclusively because no one [knows] yet, but the extended cut [of Evil Dead] will be coming out on Blu-ray. It sounds like it will be available just in time for Halloween,” Alvarez tells the site.

“I think that what was released in theaters is the best version of the film, but there are many deleted scenes that will be in the Blu-ray when it comes out that I really wanted people to see. [The additional scenes] really help us to understand more about the characters. There [was a lot of footage trimmed from] the film to maintain its tension. [Evil Dead] moves fast, and there is constantly something going on so we had to keep [moving]. It was inevitable that some things [were lost along the way.]”

Stay tuned for more on this as it comes, and big thanks to eagle-eyed DC reader Yorsh R. for the heads up!
