Ash vs. Evil Dead: Bruce Campbell Brings the Swagger to Fighting Deadites

Over three decades after first releasing a cadre of demons in 1981’s campy horror classic The Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell is back! Yes, the Burn Notice vet is killing it once again as Ash, the movie franchise’s one-handed, demon-killing Lothario in Starz’s new series Ash vs. Evil Dead, created by the film’s original director, Sam Raimi. And even though the world is about to be attacked by a plague of so-called Deadites (the Evil term for the undead), have no fear: Our hero is livelier—and groovier—than ever.

As Groovy As Ever, Bruce Campell Insists ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ is Better Than a Fourth Film

Boom, baby, boom! Nearly 30 years after we last saw Ash Williams in action, Bruce Campbell is back battling Deadites, only this time on the small screen.

Campbell’s return to the chainsaw-wielding, boomstick-firing character he originated in 1981 finally happens next month in “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” the Starz sequel series to Sam Raimi’s cult-favorite film trilogy. The debut season consists of 10 half-hour episodes – the pilot is helmed by Raimi, who’s producing alongside longtime partner Rob Tapert – with the stock boy and aging lothario forced to face his demons when a Deadite plague threatens to destroy humanity.

“This is better than a fourth movie,” promised the 57-year-old Campbell, who’s heard calls from the franchise faithful for decades to revisit the world of “Evil Dead.” “The fans have driven all this. The fans are responsible for every single bit of this. They’ve been relentless for years. The last ‘Evil Dead’ movie was 24 years ago — 1991, when we shot ‘Army of Darkness.’ They haven’t shut up since! So no matter what we say to them or what we give them, it will never be enough – and we’re very grateful for that.”

“Even if I was over it, the fans would not allow me to be over it,” the actor chuckled during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. “I’ve gone to conventions since 1988, and I’ve heard ever every subsequent year, ‘When are you making more of this?’ … I don’t think I was ever really over it. You get a little tired of not being able to answer them, because they go, ‘When is another movie coming?’ I couldn’t really tell them, so I was more frustrated, like them, than being over it. I can’t be over the ‘Evil Dead’ movies. They got me into the film business.”

Dead Leaves Now Available for Pre-Order from Boo Books

The latest title from author Andrew David Barker, Dead Leaves, is now available for pre-order prior to its mid-October release. Chronicling three friends' troubled journey to obtain a VHS copy of The Evil Dead in the height of the video nasty hysteria, the book perfectly captures the magic of the video horror era and the controversy that surrounded it.

Set in 1980s Derby, an unremarkable Midlands town, the story follows Scott Bradley and friends Mark and Paul as they drift through life after school, trying to find their own way. The only thing they truly are about are horror films – but as the police crack down on the genre they love, their quest to obtain the holy grail of movies becomes a life-changing experience for all of them.

Tom Sullivan, special effects wizard on the original The Evil Dead, said of Dead Leaves: 'I certainly paid my price for creating the gore and mayhem in the film and all I got was this book. Besides being a lively and engaging read, Andrew David Barker's Dead Leaves demonstrates we were successful in ruining at least one generation of young Britons' bright and eager minds.'

Alex Davis, Publisher at Boo Books, said: 'I've been blown away with the response to this title from fans of The Evil Dead – a community that I count myself a proud member of! Anyone who went through the video nasty era or has a passion for the movie will no doubt identify with the characters in this book and everything it brings them to experience.'

Dead Leaves is available to pre-order at £6.99 plus postage (see website for further details on UK and international postage). Pre-order copies will all be signed by the author and posted immediately upon release. For more information, or to order your copy, visit http://boobooks.net/bookshop/dead-leaves-pre-order

EW: Bruce Campbell on if there will be time travel on Ash vs Evil Dead

The first two Evil Dead movies take place pretty much exclusively in a creepy cabin and its immediate surroundings — until the final scene of Evil Dead 2. That is when Ash is transported back to medieval times to kick ancient deadite ass, which he does in the final chapter of the trilogy, Army of Darkness.

So with the new television incarnation, Ash vs Evil Dead, set to debut Halloween night on Starz, it got us wondering: Could there possibly be some time travel on the TV version as well? We asked star Bruce Campbell about that and more. And we’ve got some exclusive new photos as well.

'Ash vs. Evil Dead's' Lucy Lawless promises 'buckets of blood and good humor'

Lucy Lawless didn't appear in the original "Evil Dead" movies, but she brings her own cult following to the TV revival of that classic horror franchise. The New Zealand native stars as the mysterious and ruthless Ruby in the upcoming series "Ash vs. Evil Dead," which reunites her with a trio of VIPs from her breakout hit, "Xena: Warrior Princess."

That would be executive producers Bruce Campbell, who returns as the titular chain saw-wielding hero Ash, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. The series launches Oct. 31 on Starz.

Lawless, also a veteran of "Spartacus," "Battlestar Galactica" and "Salem," spoke to The Times about scary laughs, drama chops and girl power. And about that potential "Xena" remake? She just may be game.

Bruce Campbell To Host & Produce Horror Competition Reality Series For 5X5 Media

Horror-comedy star (and Comic-Con royalty) Bruce Campbell has teamed with King Of The Nerds executive producers Craig Armstrong and Rick Ringbakk of 5X5 Media for a horror-themed, off-beat comedic competition series project. Tentatively titled Bruce Campbell’s Horrified, the series, which is being shopped to networks, is envisioned as a celebration of horror fans through a comedic and irreverent lens, similarly to the way TBS’ King Of The Nerds did it for people who proudly identify themselves as nerds. Campbell would host and executive produce alongside 5X5 Media’s Armstrong, Ringbakk and Charles Wachter. 5X5 is producing with Warner Horizon TV, where the company is under a deal.

Kassie DePaiva: Simply...Awesome!

Best known to sudsy devotees as the irrepressible Blair on One Life to Live, the divine Kassie DePaiva has, also, earned the hearts of discerning fright mavericks for her saucy portrayal of Bobby Joe in Evil Dead II. Lucky Big Gay Horror Fan recently caught up with the friendly DePaiva to chat about Undone, her (undeservedly) unreleased horror flick (featuring multiple soap opera stars and a Thelma and Louise meets terror theme), the legacy of Evil Dead, and the brilliant mechanics behind her powerful portrayal of Eve Donovan, her current role, on Days of Our Lives. Here, DePaiva proves her sunny, continual excellence is no fluke...while I continue to prove if there is a way to mispronounce something, I will do it! :) Enjoy!!!

Bruce Campbell Answers 8 Questions About ASH VS. EVIL DEAD

Geek icon Bruce Campbell is having a year to remember. When he’s not on a cross-country tour of comic book conventions or taking over local news programs, Campbell is hosting Last Fan Standing on CONtv and attempting to raise funds for a second season through Kickstarter.

On top of everything else, Campbell is starring in Ash vs. Evil Dead, a new TV series on Starz in which he reprises his role as Ashley J. Williams from The Evil Dead and Army of Darkness for the first time in twenty three years! Campbell is reuniting with director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and former Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless for a new adventure as Ash once again faces the Deadites having spent the three decades running away from his responsibilities as the Chosen One.

Earlier this week, Campbell visited Nerdist HQ in sunny Burbank, California to team up with our very own Jessica Chobot for the special report above! Campbell discusses why the new Evil Dead story is happening on television instead of film, tells us how it felt to be Ash again, and explains how Ash has changed in the decades since we last saw him in Army of Darkness.

Ash vs Evil Dead coming to Super Channel

A series inspired by the horror classic The Evil Dead, Steven Soderbergh’s latest TV series and a TV movie starring Sirs Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen are coming to Super Channel as part of an expanded agreement with Starz Worldwide Distribution in the U.S.

Ash vs Evil Dead is a followup to Sam Raimi’s 1981 horror film about a group of kids who encounter demons in a cabin in the woods. Bruce Campbell reprises his role as monster hunter Ash Williams. Genre legend Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess, Salem, Spartacus) is also in the cast. It will debut Oct. 31.

Raimi is an executive producer on the series along with Campbell and Rob Tapert, who produced the original film (Tapert is also married to Lawless). Craig DiGregorio, known for Chuck, is the showrunner.

Ash vs. Evil Dead‘s Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless Are Ready to Get Bloody (VIDEO) | TV Insider

The world of Ash vs. Evil Dead may be dark, dreary and demonic, but Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) and Lucy Lawless (Xena: The Warrior Princess) manage to serve up some sarcasm and humor on and off the set.

The co-stars (who hadn't worked together in 15 years!) stopped by the TV Guide Magazine/TV Insider yacht at Comic-Con this year to preview their upcoming series, which airs on Halloween. And because of the spooky holiday season, Lawless warned the show will be "a jolly splatterfest." Added Campbell, "scary stuff happens. blood flows," but there will still be funny lines and scenes.

Hail to the King - Bruce Campbell on Fandom

Michael Stewart writes:

Life’s not easy for B movie stars.

Often the hardest working actors in Hollywood, these folks drift from film to television, animation to video games, going where the work is. They’re not the ones punching the clock on the latest summer blockbuster. These are the actors who count themselves lucky to work in what many consider a savage industry, the ones who truly appreciate what it means to have fans.

Occasionally, they’ll even land a role that earns them a cult following.

In his 35-year acting career, Bruce Campbell has had more than a few of those. Tall, dark, and handsome, Campbell starred in the canceled-before-its-time serialized Western, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. He had roles on television’s Hercules, Xena, and most recently, Burn Notice. And his square jaw and cleft chin served him well as Ash Williams, the retail clerk thrust into a battle with the forces of evil, in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series.

An actor, writer, and director, Campbell loves to work. He also loves the fans that make it possible. We spoke recently about fan culture and what he’s been up to.

Exclusive: Dana DeLorenzo says Ash 'has met his match' on Evil Dead series

Aaron Sagers
writes:

Sure, Ashley J. Williams is back, but when it comes to slaying Deadites in the 21st Century, he’s going to need a hand. That’s where Dana DeLorenzo comes in. In Starz’ new series Ash vs. Evil Dead, premiering this Halloween, she stars as Kelly Maxwell, one-half of our hero's back-up crew.

But don’t call her a sidekick. Whereas Pablo (played by Ray Santiago) looks up to the demon-dispatching one-handed one-liner machine that is Ash -- of course still played by Bruce Campbell -- DeLorenzo’s Kelly begins the series as less than impressed with “the king.”

Instead, she says she first meets Ash when he tries to pick her up on her first day working at Value Stop, where Pablo and Ash also work. It isn’t until later that she sees there might just slightly more to Ash than the sleaziness. But when I speak to her on set, it seems like she’s definitely part of Team Ash.
