[Interview] Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell On “Ash vs Evil Dead”!

From left to right: Executive producer Robert Tapert, star of the series and executive producer Bruce Campbell along with executive producer Sam Raimi, original filmmakers of the EVIL DEAD franchise, start production on the TV series “Ash vs Evil Dead” which will premiere this fall on Starz - © 2015 Starz Entertainment, LLC

Info from bloody-disgusting.com:

This morning Starz announced the start of production on “Ash vs Evil Dead”, a new television series based on Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise.

And while the full details can be found here, Bloody Disgusting joined a roundtable – with Raimi, Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell – to discuss the inagural 10-episode season that brings Campbell back as the beloved Ashley J. Williams, the aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons – personal and literal.

“Ash is going to making friends and enemies on this show,” teased Raimi.

Tapert went into detail: “This incarnation has a team that forms around him, Pablo [Simon Bolivar (Ray Santiago)], a young immigrant who wants to be part of the American fabric and forget his roots – and through his encounters with Ash discovers what’s important to him.

“Kelly Maxwell (Dana DeLorenzo) is Pablo’s love interest,” he adds. “At first [she] doesn’t believe in Ash and wants nothing to do with him, but eventually becomes part of the team. They go about realizing there is something greater at play than a series of Evil Dead-like attacks.”

He continues: “[They are] joined by Jill Marie Jones [who] plays Amanda Fisher, a police officer who sees something that she doesn’t believe. [This] causes her great problems in her profession. She is on the trail to hunt down Ash because she believes he is responsible for the series of bodies [she finds] as a Michigan State Police Detective. She teams with Ruby (Lucy Lawless), [who] knows something about the Evil Dead and is also on hunt for Ash.”

The episodes will be 30-minutes long, which came as a surprise. Raimi expressed his excitement about this as it allows them to push the pacing up a notch.

“I really appreciate that Starz let us keep the half-hour idea,” said Raimi. “It’s really cool to me [because] we could really fire on a cylinders, be outrageous and fast-paced and nonstop without a lot of secondary character expositions.” There’s literally no padding, he says.

The Roles That Got Away with Bruce Campbell | Nerdist

Bruce “The Chin” Campbell has been a staple of nerd culture for as long as most of us can remember. Since breaking through with his longtime friend and collaborator Sam Raimi when he created horror icon Ash in the original Evil Dead, he’s gifted us with his style and good humor in projects ranging from the masterful Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness to cult favorites like The Hudsucker Proxy and Bubba Ho-Tep to television hits Xena: Warrior Princess and Burn Notice, on which he starred for seven seasons as unflappable former Navy SEAL Sam Axe. Campbell’s also appeared in perhaps the funniest Old Spice TV commercials ever made and offered unforgettable cameos in all three of Raimi’s blockbuster Spider-Man movies… But what of the roles that got away? In this exclusive Nerdist Presents video, the one and only Chin reflects on what might have been in his own inimitable fashion.

Lucy Lawless Discusses Her Role in the Upcoming Series "Ash vs Evil Dead" on Starz

The following is a partial transcript of a HuffPost Live interview with Lucy Lawless conducted by Ricky Camilleri. The interview streamed live on April 14, 2015. The excerpts below pertain only to the upcoming Starz show Ash vs Evil Dead. Click here to watch the entire interview.

Excerpt One - Discussion of Ash vs Evil Dead begins @ the 19:55 mark:

Ricky Camilleri: Talk to me about Ash vs. Evil Dead. I'm a huge Evil Dead fan.

Lucy Lawless: Uh huh.

Ricky Camilleri: So what does this show entail?

Lucy Lawless: Well, I call it a jolly old splatterfest, though I've not read, all the, you know, script, so I can't... I'm giving you broad stokes here, where we revisit Ash, as a 50 something year old man, who's still working at, you know, some loser pharmacy or something. And uhm, oh, I didn't say that. Not a good pharmacy, like all ones you have in America. This is, you know, a lame pharmacy, in a another country. Uhm so.

Ricky Camilleri: You quantify pharmacy.

Lucy Lawless: Yeah, okay anyway, he's working in a uh sort of, still in his no end, dead end job. And, uhm, and I'm going to be the character in the movie who tortures him, mercilessly.

Ricky Camilleri: You get to torture Bruce Campbell?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah, 'cause if you think about it, the Evil Dead movies and the Army of Darkness, uh, they were all about torturing Bruce, as a character.

Ricky Camilleri
: Oh yeah.

Lucy Lawless
: And I feel there is nobody, but a little sister like me, who knows to get under a big brother's skin.

Ricky Camilleri: Have you started shooting?

Lucy Lawless: They start this week. I'm still shooting Salem, uhm, in Louisiana and I will join them next month.

Ricky Camilleri
: Are you excited. Have you... Do you know Bruce?

Lucy Lawless
: Yeah!

Ricky Camilleri
: Have you met him before?

Lucy Lawless
: I've known Bruce for 20 years.

Ricky Camilleri: Really?

Lucy Lawless: So Sam Raimi is directing it, the original director, the original star.

Ricky Camilleri: Wow.

Lucy Lawless: Rob, my husband, was one of the producers, he's doing... We got the band back together. It's going to be great.

Ricky Camilleri: That's amazing. I can't wait see this. Where, what, what network is it airing on?

Lucy Lawless: Starz.

Ricky Camilleri
: It's on Starz?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah.

Ricky Camilleri
: Oh, this sounds fantastic.

Excerpt Two - Discussion of Ash vs Evil Dead begins @ the 25:16 mark:

Ricky Camilleri: Will your character on Ash vs. Evil Dead be someone, that would be, say the show runs for a couple of seasons, three seasons, would your character end up being on that for the duration?

Lucy Lawless
: Yeah I've signed on for the duration.

Ricky Camilleri: So that's interesting. When was the last time you signed on for, uh, the duration, rather than just a short arc? Is this the first time in a while?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah, a really long time. It was, it's taken me a long time to find a show or a bunch of people that I would, uh, to line up, you know, my availability, with their desire, with our mutual liking. Because it's kind of like a marriage.

Ricky Camilleri: Yeah

Lucy Lawless: So you don't want to get in bed with people that you don't, uh, think will respect you in the morning. Or vice versa. You know got to really love...

Ricky Camilleri: Or it's going to be silence in the morning.

Lucy Lawless
: And had Ash vs Evil Dead not come up, I would have signed on with Salem, cause I have a great deal of respect for them. There such a fine bunch of human beings.

Bob Murawski on the key to good editing

Editor Bob Murawski (1964) talks about the part of an editor in the movie making process and the key to good editing, his collaboration with Sam Raimi, the interference of the film studio's and actors. "When I'm editing it's more about trying to figure out when not to cut than when to cut".

Bob Murawski was a guest at the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam 2015 to give a Masterclass editing. Murawski is best known for his work with Sam Raimi, from Army of Darkness (1992), via the Spiderman trilogy to Oz the Great and the Powerful (2013). Together with his wife, editor Chris Innis, he won an Oscar for his work on The Hurt Locker (2008).

Space Goat Productions Expands The Evil Dead Universe In August

The Evil Dead Universe expands in August with Space Goat Publishing’s Evil Dead 2: Tales of the Ex-Mortis #1.

The new anthology mini-series will feature original stories set in the ED2U from Jeff Mariotte & Marsheila Rockwell, Ivan Cohen, Justin Peniston, Georgia Ball and Frank Hannah, the writer of Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn.

The new mini-series focuses on the open-ended questions from the movie Evil Dead 2.

“The ED2U is a rich, untapped place that spans back to the darkest beginnings of human history,” said SGP CEO Shon Bury.

“The Ex-Mortis disappeared in the 13th Century, and we didn’t see it again until Ash turned on the tape recorder. That’s a big gap in time that’s packed with demons, Deadites, Kandarian history, and reanimated hands.”

Lucy Lawless Talks About Salem, Mementos And Her First Evil Dead Experience

Interview Excerpts:

Q. Who are you playing in the Evil Dead show?

A. I'm in what Meryl Streep calls the "witchy-poo" phase of life, going straight from this very high-end drama in the horror genre to splatter comedy. I'm playing Ruby, who will no doubt be revealed as a bit of a crazy woman. She's stuck on Bruce Campbell for one reason or another — she wants to bring him to justice, but we'll see whether her motives are pure or not. Or if she's just bonkers.

Q. Were you an Evil Dead fan before meeting Rob?

A. No, I was disgusted by it. When I was 17, my very first boyfriend and I went to his friend's house and we were going to watch this "great" movie called Evil Dead. And when the tree starts to brutalize the young woman in the first five minutes, I got up and left. I was furious: "Whoever the filmmakers were are complete misogynists and they're sick!" I was full of young woman angst. Cut to 10 years later and I'm married to the guy.
