Groovy! Evil Dead: The Musical headed to Austin

From the start, Sam Raimi's Evil Dead was ripe for a musical adaptation—its cast of college kids is broad and over-acting, the film's minimal "cabin + woods" setting makes stage design a cinch, and the visual effects and makeup are low-fi enough that they can be translated to the stage as easily as red food coloring can be added to Karo syrup. And if they look cheesy? Well, that's part of the appeal, isn't it?

Austinites will have the chance to see it happen this October, when Salvage Vanguard Theatre and Doctuh Mistuh Productions put on Evil Dead: The Musical.

Interview: Bruce Campbell of Burn Notice

What question have you answered that you're sick and tired of answering

Bruce Campbell: Well, The Evil Dead ones come to mind, but again I still can't hold that against anybody, because they're interested. So, I just get tired of repeating it, only because it's asked so much. I just want to send out a banner everyday reminding people of what's happening or not happening. But it's ok. It's all good. I don't really mind it.

300 + Gladiator + Sam Raimi = Spartacus: Blood and Sand

The series is produced by Sam Raimi, he told us yesterday that he’ll have to vacate that seat for his directing duties on Spider-man 4. But his longtime producing partner Rob Tapert will be handling the reins, which is a bit of a return to the days of Hercules and Xena. If you listen to the Army of Darkness DVD commentary, you’ll hear Sam Raimi sort of half-heartedly apologize for the scene where two topless women are dragged offscreen by two skeleton warriors, and he blames it all on Tapert. Does that mean we can thank him for all of the gratuitous nudity in Spartacus? We hope so.

Interview: Bruce Campbell talks ‘Burn Notice’ & ‘Drag Me to Hell’

Cult actors have come and gone throughout the years cinema has been around, but one man manages to stay in the spotlight, and the hearts, of fans everywhere. That man is Bruce Campbell.

Drag Me to Hell DVD and Blu-ray Date Set

An official announcement has yet to come from Universal Home Entertainment, but according to Moviefone Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on October 20th. Specs and cover art are not available.

Released in May, the film grossed an estimated $58 million worldwide. Unfortunately, it didn't quite find its audience in spite of the critical praise. Here's hoping it develops a strong fanbase on home video!

HowStuffWorks "Necronomicon Appearances"

Perhaps the most infamous appearance of the "Necronomicon" in cult film circles is "The Evil Dead" series. Sam Raimi's films follow the misadventures of Ash, played by Bruce Campbell, as he encounters supernatural ghouls and ghosts determined to cut his life short. The source of all the trouble is an ancient book bound in human skin and written in blood.

The "Necronomicon" from "The Evil Dead" movies shows up in other films as well. It's just one of many horror movie references in the movie "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (click link and go to 5:15)," and appears on display in "Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings." It also pops up in a television episode of "Hercules" called "City of the Dead" and in Marvel Comics' Zombies storyline.

On television, the "Necronomicon" shows up quite a bit, mostly in cartoons. Here's a short list of some of the animated shows that reference it:

"Aqua Teen Hunger Force"
"Metalocalypse"
"The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy"
"The Real Ghostbusters"
"The Simpsons"

'Burn Notice' renewed at USA

USA Network has renewed its flagship action drama "Burn Notice" and breakout freshman hit "Royal Pains." Both series have been picked up for 16 more episodes.

"Burn," starring Jeffrey Donovan, is being picked up for a fourth season. The show it helped launch, the Mark Feuerstein-starring medical soap "Pains," is being renewed for a second turn.

Sam Raimi's Intense "Spartacus" Trailer

Starz has unveiled the official trailer for the network's thirteen-episode series called "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Rob Tapert (Drag Me to Hell) and Steven DeKnight ("Smallville).

The new series clearly has some visuals that are similar to the ones seen in "Gladiator" and "300." It is set to premiere on Stars in January of 2010.

Blizzard Ponders Bruce Campbell's Role in Warcraft Film

With director Sam Raimi officially tied to the Warcraft movie, the question is not "will Bruce Campbell be in the film," but rather, "who will he play?"

Okay, okay. It's true that Bruce Campbell - perhaps best known for his work as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead series - hasn't been in every movie Sam Raimi has directed, but... well, look at their respective lists, and you'll find that it's pretty close.

So with Raimi tapped to helm the upcoming feature film set in the world of Blizzard's popular Warcraft series, the question being bandied around at Blizzard's Irvine, CA headquarters seems to be a matter of wondering just who the cult-film icon will play. At least, that's what VP of creative development Chris Metzen said during the Warcraft "Epic Loot" panel at Comic-Con.

Movie Minutiae: The Evil Dead (1981)

With Sam Raimi returning to his horror roots with Drag Me To Hell, I thought it was time to take a look at the film that started it all.

The Evil Dead, filmed for $375,000, went on to reap $2.4 million in the US and spawn two sequels (with a third possible in the works), a Broadway musical and a comic book series.

Let's put those box office figures in perspective.

If as suggested Spider-Man 3 cost $270 million to make, it would have to pull in over $1.7 billion to earn the same profit ratio!

Sam Raimi, director of Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, the Spider-Man films, has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The scoop was first reported by AICN and later confirmed by Variety, who also reports that The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is also on board. The current plan is for Raimi to supervise the development of the movie and to begin production after Spider-Man 4.

Immaculately coiffed and dressed in a dapper black suit and tie, the 49-year-old hardly resembles our image of a successful Hollywood director.

Picking up where the first comic book series left off, Jason is back at his favorite place, the bottom of a lake, being held down by Sam Raimi’s favorite car, the Oldsmobile Delta 88. Finally, the world acknowledges that Jason is a killing machine that cannot be killed and now want him for military advancement. And yet, the idiots send unarmed divers to bring him. You know Jason, he loves em dumb! So he hacks them up, and with the guidance of Krueger in his head, seeks out King Ash for some major payback.

RETRO REVIEW: The Evil Dead

The first Evil Dead film, is more of a showcase of the women than it is of Bruce Campbell. The most famous scenes from The Evil Dead all include the women. The raping trees, the pencil in the ankle, Linda's ridiculous laugh, the biting off the arm, THE CELLAR, the JOIN US, all of it, LADIES OF THE EVIL DEAD.

To put it simply, The Evil Dead is fabulous. It completely embodies everything a cult classic film should possess. It's creepy, it's funny, it's over the top, and yet it holds a place near and dear to our hearts.
