Army of Darkness Blu-ray Review

I can’t express exactly how shockingly impressive the opening twenty minutes of this Blu-ray release were. I came out of Evil Dead II pleasantly surprised and even impressed by the changes an HD transfer can make, but here it was in a whole other league.

Then, just as you are comfortable with how striking this clean up is, we cut to an interior shot and it all goes to hell.

The Real Evil Dead Chainsaw

I am skilled in chainsaw repair, so that is important. I found the real Homelite XL in a scrap pile, so it needed to be broken down completely, cleaned, oiled, and reassembled. There was too much work that could be videotaped, but I can explain the steps for everything later.

"I think this is a movie that will shock, horrify and amuse folks,” he says. “I want to mess with the audience’s heads, and this movie is gonna do that. Big time." Campbell also wants you to know that My Name is Bruce is not really a comment on his typically obsessed fan base. "99 per cent of fans are awesome," he says. "But there is always the remaining one per cent. So we decided to build the story of this around them.

Bruce Campbell Atones for Bubba Ho-Tep With My Name Is Bruce

Now that My Name Is Bruce is completely finished, the actor-director will be traveling with the movie to personally introduce the screenings. "I'm going to 22 cities, screening the movie and doing Q&A's afterward... basically just introducing the movie to the freaks." That will put him in New York for a screening at the Sunshine Cinema on Halloween night. "Most of the year I have to walk around wearing some kind of costume," comments Campbell. "I will be going as Bruce Campbell that night." But if he could have cast someone else to play him in this latest movie, who would he choose? That's easy: "Elvis Presley, of course."

Bruce Campbell’s Prime-Time Moment

“A lot of the people who follow what I do only want to see me do certain things,” he said, not complaining. Some of his fans, he said, want to know why his “Burn Notice” character, a low-key former F.B.I. operative, doesn’t have more fight scenes. “I’ve been trying,” he said, “but three or four weeks ago I was trying to kick a stuntman in the face and blew my hamstring. It was two days after I turned 50. I must have reached my expiration date.”

MNIB is directed in an enjoyable, clean way. The photography is simple and lets you concentrate on the movie; pacing, lighting, editing, it all works perfectly. The performances are pitch-perfect, from the major characters to the minor, going for the comedy but rarely going too far.

EVIL DEAD tribute band seeks DRUMS, BASS, KEYS (NYC)

Here’s the deal on the band. I’m a big fan of Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead films. I was paging through The Voice looking at all of the hundreds of bands playing at venues across the city. I thought to myself, a lot of these bands are probably pretty good, but if I didn’t already know who they were, why would I go see any of them. I WOULD be interested, however, if I saw a band that had something to do with something I was already interested in, like the Evil Dead films.

Gore just doesn't get any giddier than Sam Raimi's sequel-slash-remake (emphasis on slash), which finds average-guy Ash Williams facing off against the undead, armed with a chain saw and one-liners like ''Let's head down into that cellar and carve ourselves a witch.''
