Cult movies go through cycles of popularity. Unless, that is, you are talking about the Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness.
The horror series trio conceived by director Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert and starring Bruce Campbell, 55, as the square-jawed anti-hero Ash had its debut in 1981. The sequels followed in 1987 and 1992.
None did bang up box office initially.
“Then they just kind of took off and kept going right to today,” says Campbell. “At no point in the history or development did we ever think it would work out the way it did, up to and including convincing a major studio – Universal – to get behind Army of Darkness. It’s the only big studio film I’ve ever done and, initially, it flopped.”
But the films did great video business as well as midnight screenings and seasonal party circuits. The DVDs followed the same path. New generations kept coming on board to watch a doofus take on the evil demonic undead of the Sumerian underworld and beyond.
