What Raimi did was essentially take the most outrageous moments from the first two "Evil Dead" films and revamp them into a solid comedic third film. When he started the franchise, the first movie contained several moments of unintentional comedy. The cult following it gathered allowed Raimi to raise the stakes for the second one. By the time "Army of Darkness" rolled around, he had inadvertently invented an entirely new genre known as the horror comedy. Unfortunately for everyone else that would try to follow suit, no one could do it as well as Raimi.
